Snapchat keeps showing people because its friend-finding feature, now called Find Friends, recommends accounts it thinks you may know. Snapchat says those recommendations can draw on factors such as age, location, existing friends and followers, reputation, and activity on Snapchat. It does not publish the full formula or explain why a particular person appears—so a suggestion is not proof that they searched for you or viewed your account.
What is Snapchat’s Find Friends feature?
Find Friends is the current name for Snapchat’s friend-finding tool, which was formerly called Quick Add. Snapchat says it is meant to help people find real-life friends, family, or others they may know through their network. Depending on the app experience, suggestions can appear in Chat, Add Friends, or Search. Snapchat’s explanation of Find Friends and its Quick Add name-change notice describe the feature.
Why does Snapchat suggest particular people?
Snapchat names several broad recommendation factors: age, location, existing friends, existing followers, reputation, and behavior on Snapchat. It does not provide weights, thresholds, or a reason code showing which factor led to an individual suggestion. A person may appear because of a combination of signals, and the available explanation does not let you identify the cause for a specific account.

Can contacts make someone appear in Find Friends?
Yes. Snapchat lets users find friends using contacts stored on their device. Its support information says shared contact information may include contact names, hashed phone numbers, email addresses, and certain metadata; contact photos and dates are not uploaded. Snapchat also says a person can be recommended if you are in another Snapchatter’s contacts, even if you have not uploaded your own contacts.
To review and remove contact data already shared with Snapchat, use the contact controls in Snapchat’s settings. Snapchat warns that changing your phone’s contact permission does not necessarily delete data that was previously shared; stored contacts may continue to be used unless you remove them in the app. See Snapchat’s instructions for adding friends from contacts.

How to stop your account appearing in Find Friends
- Open Snapchat and tap your profile icon.
- Tap the gear icon to open Settings.
- Go to App & Privacy → My Privacy and Data → Who Can See.
- Tap See Me in Find Friends and switch off the setting that allows your account to appear in suggestions.
Snapchat lists this path in its privacy-settings instructions. Menu wording or placement can differ by app version or platform.

Why suggestions may continue after you change settings
These controls affect different things. Turning off device contact access does not by itself clear previously uploaded data; deleting that data does not remove you from someone else’s contact book; and Find Friends recommendations can draw on factors besides contacts. Snapchat specifically notes that you may still see people if you are saved in their contacts or because of other recommendation factors.

What to know about teen safety and other ways to connect
Snapchat says accounts and friend lists are private by default, and that users can communicate with mutually accepted friends or people whose numbers they have saved in contacts. Its materials also describe additional limits on teen discoverability, including requiring indications of a pre-existing connection in some cases, along with in-chat warnings and other measures intended to reduce unwanted contact. These are Snapchat’s descriptions of its protections, not a guarantee that every feature works identically for every person, region, or app version.
Snapchat’s safety update for the UK describes other ways to find and connect with someone when Find Friends is not enabled: searching a username, searching a display name, or using a Snapcode.
