npmx.dev’s stale package-version display was traced to client-side fetch caching, not to a defect in how the comparison page chose which package version was latest. In an August 2026 account, Tejas Patil said the page sometimes showed tinyclip at 0.0.1 instead of the reported latest version, 0.1.8. The proposed change is in pull request #3156; its merge and deployment status are not established here.

What caused the stale version display?

Patil traced the issue to the comparison composable that retrieves registry metadata through $npmRegistry(...) and useCachedFetch(). In the client branch, the TTL parameter was named _ttl but was not used. Meanwhile, the fetch options hardcoded cache: 'force-cache'.

That distinction matters: a TTL value cannot control cache freshness if the client never passes it into the fetch option that governs caching. With force-cache, the browser may reuse a stored response without first checking whether it is still fresh. The comparison page can then render old registry metadata without crashing or signaling an error.

Patil reported that the registry response included cache-control: public, max-age=300 and an ETag. He interpreted those headers as allowing a response to be treated as fresh for five minutes, then conditionally revalidated. These are his reported observations, not a guarantee that npm’s current response headers are the same.

What does pull request #3156 propose?

The proposed change replaces cache: 'force-cache' with cache: 'default' in both the client branch and a server-side fallback branch. Under the standard browser HTTP cache behavior, the browser can use response freshness directives and revalidate when appropriate instead of always favoring a stored response.

Patil reports adding a regression test that asserts cache: 'default', running the test suite, and seeing a full network round trip when checking the compare page. Those are the author’s reported checks; they have not been independently reproduced here. The pull request describes a proposed fix, not proof that the change shipped.

Which cache layer are you dealing with?

npmx.dev has more than one cache-related mechanism, and clearing the wrong one will not address a browser fetch-cache issue. The browser’s HTTP fetch cache and Nitro’s persisted development-handler cache belong to separate layers.

Cache layer What it affects Relevant behavior
Browser HTTP fetch cache Responses fetched by the client for the comparison page The bug account identifies the hardcoded force-cache option as the stale-display cause; the proposed change uses default.
Nitro development-handler cache Cached results from defineCachedEventHandler in the local development environment The contributor guide says these results persist under .nuxt/cache/nitro/ across development-server restarts.
Separate .cache/ mount Fetch-cache and atproto data in the repository’s development setup The contributor guide documents this as storage separate from the Nitro handler cache.

The repository’s contributor guide documents clearing all or a specific Nitro handler cache and using shouldBypassCache during development. Those directions apply to the local development cache, not to the browser’s force-cache behavior.

What should developers check in a similar bug?

  1. Trace the value that controls freshness. Follow the TTL argument through to the actual fetch options. A parameter that is declared but unused does not change caching behavior.
  2. Inspect the client cache mode. Check whether the browser fetch uses force-cache or a mode that follows ordinary HTTP cache semantics, such as default.
  3. Identify the layer before clearing anything. Determine whether the stale response comes from the browser or a server-side development cache, then use the matching cache controls.
  4. Test both the option and the observed behavior. A regression test can assert the intended cache mode; a browser check can then confirm the expected network behavior. Attribute reported test outcomes to the person who ran them unless independently verified.

A similarly named utility called clear-npx-cache clears npm’s _npx execution cache, which is distinct from the browser HTTP fetch cache involved in this report.

Why the unused TTL is a useful debugging clue

A stale display can look like an upstream metadata or version-selection problem even when the selection logic is sound. Here, the revealing mismatch was between an apparent TTL parameter and a hardcoded cache mode that did not use it. As Patil put it, “Dead parameters are worth pausing on — they’re often a fossil record of intent the code no longer honors.”
