Windows updates recur because they do different jobs: regular quality and security updates fix vulnerabilities and reliability problems, while feature updates add capabilities. Windows 11 can also receive features through periodic servicing and Microsoft Store app updates, and some updates arrive separately or need their own restart. You can control when updates interrupt you, but pausing them is temporary and does not permanently turn off servicing.
Why are there so many Windows updates?
Windows Update handles several kinds of maintenance, so an update notification does not necessarily mean your PC is moving to a new major Windows release.
- Quality and security updates arrive more frequently and mainly address security, reliability, and other smaller fixes.
- Feature updates bring broader changes and can move a PC to a newer supported Windows release.
- Other components, including drivers, .NET, and firmware, may appear separately or alongside operating-system updates, depending on the device and how it is serviced.
- Servicing stack updates update the component that installs Windows updates, helping it install later updates reliably. Microsoft explains servicing stack updates.
Microsoft describes Windows 11 as receiving annual feature updates, periodic updates delivered through servicing, and Microsoft Store app updates. These streams can mean more than one update or restart over time, but Microsoft does not establish a universal number of prompts or restarts for every PC. The exact experience depends on the Windows version, update type, device, rollout, and any management policy. See Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ.

Why do updates arrive at different times?
Windows 11 features do not all arrive in a single annual package. Microsoft uses phased, measured deployment—including Controlled Feature Rollout—and may deliver changes through existing monthly update processes. Two otherwise similar devices can therefore receive a feature at different times.

The setting Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available opts in to earlier availability for some non-security and feature updates. Microsoft says regular security updates continue on their normal schedule whether the setting is on or off. Turning it on may mean more restarts; Microsoft’s guidance notes that some restarts are needed to apply changes. Read Microsoft’s explanation of Windows 11 feature delivery and its instructions for getting updates as soon as they’re available.
Can I stop Windows from restarting to update?
You can reduce surprise restarts and choose more convenient timing, but the controls do not permanently disable updates.

Set active hours
Open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Active hours and set the hours when you usually use the PC. Windows can use this schedule to avoid restarting during those hours. If Windows offers a restart schedule for an installed update, choose a time that suits you.

Pause updates temporarily
Open Settings > Windows Update > Pause updates. Microsoft’s guidance says Windows 11 can be paused for up to 35 days. When the pause ends, Windows checks for updates and installs the latest ones; a pause is a deferral, not a permanent shutdown of updates.

Choose whether to get some updates earlier
Under Settings > Windows Update, turn Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available on if you prefer earlier access to some non-security and feature updates, or leave it off to wait for the standard rollout. Security updates remain on their normal schedule either way. Earlier availability may bring more restarts.
What does Microsoft’s one-restart change mean?
Microsoft says that, for specified Windows 11 versions, updates released on and after July 28, 2026 align driver, .NET, and firmware updates with the monthly security update so they can share one restart. The monthly security update is typically released on the second Tuesday.

The change is rolling out gradually, so it may not yet be available on every device. It also does not hold every update for that combined restart: Microsoft lists Defender security intelligence, AI component updates, critical or expedited drivers, and emergency or out-of-band updates as exceptions. See Microsoft’s guidance on one restart a month for applicability details.
What if an update fails or Windows 10 keeps showing updates?
If an update will not install
Check Windows Update history and your installed Windows version, then use Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter. The update history can help distinguish a failed installation from a normal update prompt; not every prompt signals a major release.

If the PC runs Windows 10
Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 under standard support. A PC may continue to work, and a continuing notification or component update is not proof that the operating system remains in standard support. Check the specific edition and any applicable extended-support arrangement before drawing conclusions about its coverage. Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ describes the support end date.
