Clear speech is only one part of a smart speaker’s job. The device must first detect its wake phrase, capture your words through room microphones, convert the audio into text, interpret the request, and reach the assistant service. A failure at any one of those stages can sound like “it didn’t understand me.”
Start by watching for the activation light or sound. If the speaker never activates, investigate the microphone, wake sensitivity, placement, power, and Wi-Fi. If it activates, use request history or a repeat-back command to see what words it heard. That distinction tells you whether to fix wake-word detection or speech recognition.
Find the stage that failed
Do not begin by changing how you speak. First identify where the interaction stopped. A short test makes this easier than repeating a long request.

This separation matters because changing your wording cannot repair a muted microphone, and rebooting will not make an unsupported language capability available.

Step 1: Check whether the wake phrase was heard
Watch the activation indicator
Say only the wake phrase and pause. Look for the device’s light, tone, or other activation signal. If nothing appears, the speaker did not reach the stage where it could interpret your request. Google’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking this indicator and, on supported devices, adjusting hotword sensitivity when activation fails repeatedly.
Unmute and uncover the microphones
Check the physical microphone-mute switch or button. A muted device normally cannot hear a wake phrase, no matter how clearly you speak. Make sure a case, decorative cover, dust, or an object placed on top has not blocked the microphone openings. Clean only as the exact model’s manual allows; do not insert tools or liquid into the openings.
Reduce competing sound before changing your voice
Turn down a television, music, fan, or nearby conversation for one test. Move an Echo or similar speaker away from walls, other speakers, and persistent background noise. Echoes, strong wind, and fast speech are also identified as obstacles in guidance for some wireless-speaker models. A temporary quiet-room test distinguishes an acoustic problem from a software problem.

If the indicator appears only when you are close to the device, look for the hotword-sensitivity control in the device’s assistant settings. The exact label and availability vary by model. Increase sensitivity cautiously: a setting that is too sensitive can create more false activations from sounds that resemble the wake phrase.
Step 2: If it activates, find out what it heard
Use the assistant’s own read-back tools
On Google devices, ask the assistant to repeat the question or otherwise display the recognized request. If the transcript contains the wrong name, number, or verb, you have found a capture or transcription problem rather than an incorrect answer.

On Echo, ask, “Did you hear me?” Amazon also provides Alexa voice history and request read-back features. Review the recorded request, when available, and compare it with what you actually said. Voice history can reveal a clipped first word, a nearby conversation being included, or a commonly confused term.
Run a deliberately short test
Use a direct request with one action: “Set a timer for two minutes,” for example. Leave a brief pause after the wake phrase, then speak at a measured pace. Ofcom participants reported more trouble when they spoke quickly, stood farther away, used conversational phrasing, or started talking without a pause after the wake word. These are diagnostic adjustments, not a requirement that you adopt one “correct” way of speaking.

Repeat the same short request from your usual position, then from closer by, then in a quieter room. If only the distance changes the result, placement or microphone pickup is implicated. If the transcript is wrong in every location, test the configured language and the device software before assuming the hardware is defective.
Step 3: Inspect placement, room acoustics, and distance
Choose an open location
Place the speaker on a stable surface with its microphones unobstructed. Keep it away from a wall corner, a second speaker that is playing, and sources of continuous noise. Hard surfaces can reflect your voice and create echoes; moving the unit a short distance can make the captured signal clearer.
Account for wind and airflow
Fans, open windows, air conditioners, and outdoor gusts can mask consonants. Test with the airflow off or with the speaker moved out of the stream. If recognition improves immediately, the problem is environmental rather than your pronunciation.

Consider speaking position
Smart speakers use microphone arrays whose pickup varies by model. Face the device for the test, avoid covering it with your hand, and do not speak from behind a closed door or large piece of furniture. A device that works nearby but not across the room may simply be beyond reliable pickup in that room.
Step 4: Verify mute state, power, and Wi-Fi
Confirm power and the supplied adapter
For Echo, Amazon recommends using the supplied power adapter and checking that the device is receiving power. A partially disconnected cable can produce intermittent failures that resemble poor recognition. Watch whether the device restarts, loses its indicator, or becomes unresponsive when the cable moves.
Check the internet connection
Many requests require a connection to the assistant service after the audio is captured. Confirm that the speaker is connected to Wi-Fi and that another device on the same network can reach the internet. A speaker may show an activation light yet fail to answer because the request cannot be completed online.
Restart before concluding that hardware has failed
Disconnect the speaker from power, wait briefly, and reconnect it. Google and Amazon both include unplugging and reconnecting in relevant troubleshooting flows. After it starts, wait for Wi-Fi to reconnect and run the same short test. If activation and transcription remain unreliable in a quiet room after a restart, document the model, symptoms, and transcript errors before contacting the manufacturer.
Step 5: Check the configured language and capability support
Echo language path
In the Alexa app, open More → Settings → Device Settings, select the device, open its device settings, choose General → Language, and verify the language. The labels can change with app updates, but the language control is located in the device’s general settings.

Why language settings matter
Amazon warns that some languages do not support every capability, skill, music option, or content type. A request can therefore be transcribed accurately and still fail because the selected language or region does not provide the requested feature. Treat a language change as a compatibility check, not a guaranteed improvement in speech recognition. The available languages and capabilities depend on the device, account, and region.
Test after changing a language
If you change the language, allow the device and app to finish updating, then test a simple built-in command before trying a third-party skill or a music request. Keep a note of the original setting so you can restore it if other household users rely on that language.

Ofcom’s qualitative smart-speaker research records participant reports of misunderstandings involving regional and international accents, children’s voices, different speech patterns, pitch, volume, soft speech, rapid speech, distance, and failure to pause after the wake phrase. Participants also described needing to repeat or rephrase requests and seeing errors in music requests.
Those accounts describe real user experiences, but they do not prove that every assistant performs poorly for every speaker with one of these characteristics. They also do not establish a population-wide error rate. No independently measured numerical statistic for how often smart speakers misunderstand clear speech was identified in the cited material.

Use the reports as prompts for fair testing: try the same request in a quiet room, compare a short command with a conversational one, and inspect the transcript. A participant told Ofcom that concise wording seemed easier for her speaker to understand; that is a useful experiment, not a judgment about how anyone should speak. Recognition problems are a system-design issue, not evidence that a user is speaking incorrectly.

Privacy and false activations
Why a speaker may activate accidentally
Google says Assistant can activate unintentionally when a sound resembles “Hey Google.” Google explains that short audio snippets are processed on the device while it waits for activation. If activation is detected, the device records and sends the request audio to Google to fulfill it. Google says audio recordings are not saved on its servers by default, although activity settings and account choices control what is retained.
Google’s Safety Center states: “If no activation is detected, then those audio snippets won’t be sent or saved to Google.” This describes Google Assistant’s stated behavior, not a universal rule for every smart-speaker platform.
How Echo describes cloud processing
Amazon says Alexa-enabled devices ordinarily stream audio to the cloud after wake-word detection or button activation and describes cloud verification of wake-word detection. Amazon also says Voice ID uses recordings to create an acoustic model for recognition and personalization. These are vendor descriptions; do not assume that all assistants store, process, or delete audio identically.
What to review
- Check the microphone-mute control when you need a physical interruption of listening.
- Review the assistant’s voice or activity history and deletion controls.
- Inspect hotword-sensitivity settings if false activations are frequent.
- Tell household members which device is in the room and how its indicator signals activation.
A complete troubleshooting sequence
Follow this order so each result narrows the cause:
- Run a wake-only test: say the wake phrase and wait for the indicator.
- If there is no indicator, unmute the device, uncover the microphones, reduce noise, move it away from walls and other speakers, and check hotword sensitivity.
- If the indicator appears, issue a short command and inspect Google’s repeat-back information or Alexa voice history.
- If the transcript is wrong, pause after the wake phrase, move closer, speak more slowly for one test, and remove conversational filler.
- If the transcript is right but nothing happens, check Wi-Fi, the requested capability, account state, and configured language.
- Restart the speaker by disconnecting and reconnecting power, then wait for network reconnection.
- Repeat in a quiet room. If the same failure persists across locations and short commands, record the model, software or app version shown in settings, indicator behavior, and example transcripts for manufacturer support.
When replacement is justified
Do not buy another speaker solely because one request was misunderstood. The official troubleshooting paths emphasize diagnosis, placement, settings, language support, connectivity, and restarting. Consider hardware service or replacement only after the device fails the same controlled test with an unmuted microphone, stable power and Wi-Fi, a quiet room, and a supported language. The available evidence does not establish that purchasing a different model will automatically improve recognition for a particular accent, voice, or room.
