If your LG OLED suddenly looks dim, first check the picture mode and Energy Saving controls. Eco or Auto Power Save modes can limit brightness, and the Energy Saving Step setting can lower peak output. Switch the affected input to Standard picture mode, turn Energy Saving Step off using the route for your webOS generation, and then test ordinary video again. If only a large still image caused temporary dimming, the television may be applying normal OLED screen protection rather than failing.
Picture controls are stored per input on some LG models, so a setting that looks correct on a streaming app may still be dim on an HDMI device or antenna channel. A dark menu, a permanently dark section of the panel, or a problem that remains after a settings reset points to a signal or hardware issue and should be escalated to LG.
Start by identifying what is actually dark
Before changing several controls, note where and when the dimming occurs. LG’s troubleshooting guidance treats these patterns differently, and the distinction prevents you from chasing a normal protection behavior as if it were a broken panel.

| What you observe | Most useful first check | What the result suggests |
|---|---|---|
| The whole picture is dim on every source | Check picture mode, then Energy Saving Step | A global power-saving setting is a likely explanation. |
| Only one HDMI device, app, or antenna channel is dark | Switch to another input and compare; then check the affected input’s picture settings | LG picture settings can be input-specific, or the source and its connection may be responsible. |
| Dimming begins while a large white or otherwise static image is displayed | Play moving video and watch whether brightness returns | OLED screen-protection algorithms may be reducing output temporarily. |
| The settings menu is also too dark to read | Try the basic settings checks once, then contact LG if the menu remains unreadable | LG identifies an internal issue as a possibility when the menu itself is affected. |
| Only a strip, corner, or other portion of the screen is dark | Check another source and the cable, but do not keep recalibrating | Persistent partial-screen darkness warrants LG support. |
For the official decision path and model-specific cautions, see LG’s dark-or-dim-picture guide.

1. Put the affected input in Standard picture mode
LG lists Eco and Auto Power Save picture modes as possible causes of a dim image. These modes are designed to reduce power use, so they are a poor baseline for diagnosing brightness. Open the picture-mode selector while the dark input is on screen and choose Standard. Standard is a diagnostic starting point, not a claim that it is the best-looking mode for every room or program.
After changing the mode, replay the same scene or open the same channel that looked dark. If Standard fixes one input but not another, repeat the check on the second input: LG notes that picture settings may differ by input. Do not assume that changing the mode while watching an HDMI device also changed the settings for the built-in tuner or a separate HDMI port.
2. Turn off Energy Saving Step
Energy Saving can reduce peak screen brightness. On supported models it can also use an ambient-light sensor, and the selected level changes how bright the panel appears as room lighting changes. LG’s menu path depends on the television’s webOS generation; use the closest match below and expect minor wording differences by model.
| TV generation | Menu path to Energy Saving Step | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 and newer (webOS 26 or later) | Settings → All Settings → System → Energy Saving → Energy Saving Step → Off | Path published by LG in its July 2026 guide; individual models may vary. |
| 2022 and newer (webOS 22 or later) | Settings → All Settings → General → Energy Saving → Energy Saving Step → Off | Use the model’s displayed labels if they differ slightly. |
| 2021 (webOS 6.0) | Settings → All Settings → Support → Energy Saving → Energy Saving Step → Off | This route is specific to LG’s webOS 6.0 instructions. |
| 2020 and older (webOS 5.0 or earlier) | Settings → All Settings → Picture → Energy Saving → Off | Older sets do not necessarily show the newer “Energy Saving Step” label. |
Turn the setting off while viewing the input that looked dark, then allow the picture a moment to settle and compare the same content. If the control is unavailable, first leave Auto Power Saving or another automatic power-saving picture mode; LG says some brightness controls are disabled while automatic saving is active.

These routes and the model-year caveat come from LG’s July 28, 2026 support instructions. Do not treat a missing menu item as proof that the TV is defective: LG changes labels and locations between models and software versions.
3. Adjust OLED Pixel Brightness when your model provides it
OLED Pixel Brightness is a separate control from the Energy Saving switch. LG documents this route for 2021–2022 models:
- Press the settings button and open All Settings.
- Choose Picture.
- Open Advanced Custom Settings.
- Select Brightness, then OLED Pixel Brightness.
- Move the value upward for a brighter picture; LG describes a value closer to 100 as brighter.
This path is not universal. Model year, webOS version, selected picture mode, and automatic power-saving state can change the controls you see. LG specifically says the adjustment may be unavailable while Auto Power Saving is active, so disable that automatic mode before concluding that the slider is missing. Older software uses different picture-mode controls, and a different model may expose a similarly named setting elsewhere.
Use this control only after checking Energy Saving. Raising pixel brightness cannot correct a loose HDMI connection, a dark source video, or a panel area that is physically failing. LG’s explanation of automatic power saving and this model-limited path is available in its webOS automatic-power-saving article.

4. Reset picture settings on the affected input
If a previous adjustment left several picture controls in an unknown state, reset the picture rather than changing sliders one by one. LG’s current instructions place the reset in different locations by model age:
- 2021 and newer: open Picture → Advanced Settings and choose the available reset option.
- 2020 and older: open Picture → Picture Mode Settings and choose the available reset option.
Perform the reset while the problematic input is selected. Because picture settings can be stored separately for inputs, resetting a streaming app’s picture mode may not reset an HDMI port. A remote shortcut for resetting picture settings also varies by model year; use the on-screen route if your manual does not show a shortcut. A reset returns picture adjustments to the television’s defaults, so note any custom calibration you want to recreate afterward.
5. Check the signal path before blaming the OLED panel
LG lists a loose external connection as a possible contributor to a poor or dark picture. Power off the external source if its instructions require that, then reseat the HDMI cable at both ends. For antenna or cable television, reseat the coaxial connection and check another channel. Test a second HDMI port or a built-in app when possible.
The comparison is diagnostic:
- If built-in apps are bright but one HDMI device is dark, concentrate on that device, its cable, and the picture settings saved for that HDMI input.
- If every source is equally dim, return to the picture-mode and Energy Saving checks rather than replacing a cable at random.
- If only one channel is affected, compare several channels before changing global brightness controls.
These checks do not establish that a cable is the cause; they separate an input-specific problem from a television-wide one. LG includes connection checks in the same dark-picture troubleshooting guide.

Why an LG OLED can dim by itself
Automatic power saving and ambient light
When Energy Saving is enabled, the television can limit brightness to reduce power consumption. On models with an ambient-light sensor, the selected saving level can respond to the room’s light. The result may look like a brightness fault when the room becomes brighter or darker, even though the TV is following its configured power-saving behavior. Turning Energy Saving Step off is the cleanest test because it removes that variable.
OLED screen protection during still content
LG describes screen-performance algorithms that can reduce brightness or activate protection when a large area displays a still white image, when a still image remains for a period, or when a still image persists in one area. A bright pause screen, static computer desktop, game HUD, or paused video can therefore look dimmer than moving scenes.
Temporary dimming during those conditions is not, by itself, evidence of a failed panel. Return to ordinary moving video and observe whether the picture behaves normally. Do not try to defeat a protective behavior by repeatedly raising every brightness control; first establish whether the dimming is tied to the still image. LG explains this behavior in its automatic-power-saving guidance.

Brightness is not determined by the TV setting alone. LG notes that room lighting, reflections from the screen, picture settings, and the video itself affect perceived image appearance. A dark film scene in a reflective room can look substantially dimmer than the same scene viewed with controlled lighting, even when the television is operating normally.

Use the same source and scene for before-and-after comparisons, reduce direct reflections temporarily, and compare a bright test scene with a dark one. These observations help distinguish a global setting from content that was mastered or displayed dark. LG’s picture-settings overview discusses these viewing factors at LG TV – The Best Picture Settings For Your LG TV.
A complete troubleshooting sequence
Use this order so each step answers a different question and you can stop when the cause is clear:
- Record the scope: note the input, app, channel, scene, and whether the settings menu is also dark.
- Choose Standard: on the affected input, replace Eco or Auto Power Save with Standard and replay the same content.
- Disable Energy Saving: follow the webOS-generation route in the table and set Energy Saving Step, or the older Energy Saving control, to Off.
- Check OLED Pixel Brightness: only if your model exposes it; for documented 2021–2022 sets, use the Advanced Custom Settings route and confirm automatic saving is not blocking it.
- Reset picture settings: use the model-year route under Advanced Settings or Picture Mode Settings, then retest the affected input.
- Compare sources: test a built-in app, another HDMI input, and another antenna channel where available.
- Inspect connections: reseat the relevant HDMI or antenna cable and repeat the source comparison.
- Test moving video: if dimming followed a large or persistent still image, check whether normal motion restores the expected brightness.
- Escalate when the symptom is structural: stop adjusting settings if the menu remains unreadable or only part of the panel is dark.
When to contact LG support
Contact LG when the settings menu itself is too dark to use, when a distinct region of the screen remains dark, or when the entire picture stays dim across inputs after the documented settings reset and connection checks. Those symptoms are different from a single dark movie scene or temporary dimming during a still image.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Describe whether the symptom is constant, input-specific, or triggered by still content. This gives support a useful pattern instead of the nonspecific description “the OLED is dark.”
Do you need a replacement remote or a new TV?
Usually not. The documented remedies are menu changes, a picture reset, and inspection of the existing signal connection. A compatible replacement LG Magic Remote is relevant only when the supplied remote is missing or faulty and you cannot navigate the settings. Compatibility depends on the exact television and remote generation, so verify both model numbers before buying; a replacement remote is not a routine cure for a dim panel.
Likewise, do not purchase a new television solely because brightness changed during a static screen or because one HDMI source looks dark. Complete the input comparison and settings reset first. A persistent dark menu or partial-screen failure is the point at which professional diagnosis, not more accessories, is appropriate.
Quick Recap
Preventing the problem from coming back
- Keep a note of the picture mode and Energy Saving state you prefer for each frequently used input.
- After a software or settings change, check both built-in apps and HDMI devices because their picture controls may be stored separately.
- When diagnosing brightness, use moving content as well as a still test image so OLED protection is not mistaken for a permanent fault.
- Control reflections and compare the same scene when judging whether a change truly improved brightness.
- Save your model number and webOS generation; the correct menu path depends on them.
