First identify what “going too far” means: a newly created tab may appear at the far end of the tab strip, or an existing tab may be dragged out into a separate window. Those are different behaviors with different fixes. The browser, version, and exact movement matter, so avoid changing settings until you know which one you are seeing.
Work out what moved
- A new tab appears at the far right: This is a tab-placement issue. Firefox support guidance describes preferences that can affect where new tabs and related links appear.
- An existing tab becomes a separate window: This is tab detachment. In Chrome, dragging a tab outside the browser window opens a new window.
- Tabs shift while you browse: With many tabs open, the strip may scroll to show the active tab. The sources cited here do not establish that scrolling is the cause of your particular symptom.
- A link opened from a pinned Firefox tab appears in a new tab: This is expected behavior; Firefox keeps the pinned tab in place.
Before troubleshooting further, note your browser, operating system, and whether the tab was newly created, dragged, or pinned.
If a tab has detached into another window
Chrome
Chrome documents that dragging a tab along the top of the browser window changes its order, and dragging it outside the window opens a new one. If this happened accidentally, drag the detached tab back to the desired window’s tab strip to reunite it. You can also right-click a tab and use the option to move it to another window. Firefox
A Mozilla Support Forum answer reports that Firefox 74 and newer has an about:config preference named browser.tabs.allowTabDetach that can disable tab detachment. The advice is version-specific community guidance, not a current official Firefox Help instruction. Before changing it, check whether the preference exists and applies to your installed version. The forum answer says the tab menu can still be used to move a tab to a new window.

If new tabs appear at the far end in Firefox
Mozilla Support Forum guidance distinguishes between two preferences:
browser.tabs.insertAfterCurrentconcerns general new-tab placement.browser.tabs.insertRelatedAfterCurrentconcerns the placement of tabs opened from related links.
If the tab appears in the wrong position, check the relevant preference in about:config and reset or adjust it only if its behavior matches what you want. These settings are described in support-forum guidance rather than a current official Firefox Help article. Advanced preferences can change browser behavior, so do not alter unrelated values. If the tab is pinned
Firefox documents that clicking a link from a pinned tab opens that link in a separate new tab, leaving the pinned tab in place. If this is what you see, the tab is not being dragged or misplaced; the behavior is intentional. See Mozilla Support: Pinned Tabs – keep favorite websites open.

Chrome offers vertical tabs, which place tabs along the side of the browser instead of in a horizontal strip. This changes the layout; it is not evidence that vertical tabs prevent accidental dragging. Current controls are covered in Chrome Help, and Google announced moving tabs to the side of the browser window on April 7, 2026, in its Chrome product announcement.

What to include when asking for help
If the behavior continues, describe the exact action and result rather than calling it only “going too far.” Include:
- Browser name and version, plus your operating system.
- Whether a new tab appeared at the end or an existing tab opened in a separate window.
- Whether you were clicking, dragging, opening a related link, or using a pinned tab.
- Whether it happens consistently or only when many tabs are open.
That information helps separate a placement preference from accidental dragging, expected pinned-tab behavior, or tab-strip scrolling. The support threads cited here are anecdotal and do not establish that any one cause is universal.
