If Instagram keeps crashing, work through the steps below from least disruptive to most disruptive: close and reopen the app, restart your device, update Instagram and your operating system, then try Android cache controls or reinstall the app. These are general troubleshooting steps—not a diagnosis of a current Instagram-specific problem. Apple and Google do not establish whether a particular crash is caused by your device, an app release, or a wider service issue.
1. Close Instagram completely and reopen it
Start by closing the app rather than simply switching away from it. Then open Instagram again and see whether it stays open.
iPhone or iPad
Apple recommends closing an app that closes unexpectedly and reopening it. The gesture for viewing open apps depends on your device: on an iPhone or iPad without a Home button, swipe up from the bottom and pause; on a device with a Home button, double-click it. Find Instagram in the app switcher, swipe its preview up to close it, then tap its icon to reopen it. See Apple’s app troubleshooting steps.
Android
Open the recent-apps view and swipe Instagram away to close it, then launch it again. If it still crashes, continue to the restart and update steps.

2. Restart your phone or tablet
Restart the device, open Instagram, and check whether the crash continues. Apple includes restarting among its steps for an iPhone or iPad app that closes unexpectedly. Google recommends restarting an Android phone after each troubleshooting step: “After each step, restart your phone to see if it fixed the issue.” Its guidance covers Android apps generally, not Instagram specifically.
3. Check for an Instagram update
An available app update may address a problem in the version you have installed. Check the store for your device and install an update if one is offered; then open Instagram again.

iPhone or iPad
Open the App Store, tap your account picture, and review available updates. If Instagram appears, tap Update.
Android
In Google Play, tap your profile picture, then Manage apps & devices. Check for available updates and update Instagram if listed. Google’s Android app troubleshooting guidance includes checking for app updates.

4. Check for an operating-system update
If Instagram is up to date or still crashes, check whether your device has an iOS, iPadOS, or Android update available. Install an update if appropriate for your device, then try the app again.
iPhone or iPad
Open Settings → General → Software Update.
Android
Look in your device’s Settings for a system or software update. The exact label and menu path vary by phone maker and Android version, so use the update option shown on your device. Apple and Google both include operating-system updates in their general app troubleshooting guidance.

5. On Android, force-stop Instagram and clear its cache
Android offers app controls that can be useful when Instagram continues to crash. Menu names vary by device; a common route is Settings → Apps → Instagram.

- If it still crashes, return to Instagram’s app settings, open Storage or Storage & cache, then tap Clear cache.
- Reopen Instagram and check whether the problem persists.
Google notes that clearing cached data can temporarily free space and that cached data builds up again. Treat this as a troubleshooting attempt, not a permanent or guaranteed fix. Avoid tapping Clear storage or Clear data unless you understand the consequences: those controls are different from clearing cache and may remove app data.

6. Reinstall Instagram only after the earlier steps
Deleting or uninstalling the app is more disruptive than restarting or updating it. Before proceeding, make sure you can sign back in and that you do not need app data stored only on the device.
iPhone or iPad
Delete Instagram from the device, then download it again from the App Store. Apple warns that deleting an app may result in losing data stored in it. Its guidance recommends this after the earlier troubleshooting steps.
Android
Uninstall Instagram from your device, then reinstall it from Google Play. Google warns that uninstalling an Android app erases its app data.

If other apps work normally but Instagram continues to close unexpectedly after these steps, contact the app developer for help. The platform guidance recommends contacting the developer when one app alone continues to fail; it does not identify the cause of an Instagram-specific crash.
