Android Auto can resume or start media when your phone connects to the car, but Google’s current help does not document one universal autoplay trigger or an off switch that appears on every device. Look in Android Auto settings for a media-resume or automatic-start option; if you do not find one, or it does not stop playback, check which app is starting and whether the audio is coming through Android Auto or ordinary Bluetooth.
Why Android Auto may start playing music when you connect
Android Auto lets compatible media apps play music and podcasts through the car speakers. Google also documents quick access to a recently used media app on the car display, but it does not say that using an app recently always causes playback to begin automatically. The exact trigger can depend on the phone, app, connection, and vehicle; the available guidance does not establish one cause for every car.
Google’s official Android Auto media help explains how to play media and access apps, but does not confirm a universal autoplay-off control. The labels “Automatically resume media” and “automatically start media” have appeared in Google-hosted community discussions, rather than in a current universal setting guide.

How to look for an automatic-start setting
- Open Android Auto settings on your phone. Search your phone’s Settings for “Android Auto” if you do not know where the entry is; its location can differ between phones and software versions.
- Look for a media-resume or automatic-start control. Community posts from 2019 and 2020 refer to “Automatically resume media”; a 2023 post refers to “automatically start media.” If a similarly named setting is present, turn it off and reconnect to see whether the behavior changes. These labels are reports, not a guarantee that the control exists on your device.
- Note what happens after reconnecting. Check whether audio starts, which app is active, and whether the app was the one used most recently. A podcast or music app may still appear on screen even when playback does not begin.
The results reported by other users are mixed. In an August 2019 community exchange, one user said enabling “Automatically resume media” made Spotify start after connecting the phone to the head unit. In a July 2023 post, a user said disabling an automatic-start option stopped playback, although the podcast window could still appear. But in a May 2020 exchange, the person seeking help said switching off “Automatically resume media” had not fixed their problem. These are individual reports, not a current Google-supported guarantee.

Check whether the sound is coming from Bluetooth instead
Wireless Android Auto setup uses Bluetooth pairing between the phone and car, but that alone does not show that Bluetooth is causing playback. First identify whether Android Auto is active on the car display or whether the phone is simply sending audio over a Bluetooth connection.
If the issue is Bluetooth-only audio, Google’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guide recommends checking whether “Media audio” is enabled for the car or accessory in the phone’s Bluetooth device settings. Google also notes that not all cars can play music by Bluetooth. This setting controls Bluetooth audio routing; it is not the same as Android Auto’s reported media-resume or automatic-start behavior.

If the setting does not fix it
- Only one app starts playback: Check that app’s support resources. Google advises contacting the app developer for app-specific problems; its list of compatible media apps explains which apps can work with Android Auto.
- The behavior changes with the car or connection: Consult the vehicle owner’s manual or contact the manufacturer. Google’s wireless Android Auto setup guidance says to confirm vehicle compatibility and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
- You cannot find the option: Search Android Auto settings for related wording, but do not assume every phone has the same control. The documented community labels may not match your current software.
