Leaving a browser tab is not the same as stopping its media. Android may keep the player running, show the video in a floating Picture-in-Picture (PiP) window, or continue audio through background media controls. Tap pause in the player or notification, and close the floating window if PiP is visible. The exact behavior depends on the browser, website, Android version, and the action you took.
First, identify which kind of playback you are seeing
The quickest fix depends on whether the video is still visible or only its sound remains. Use the symptom, rather than the fact that you changed tabs, to identify the mechanism.

There is no reliable Android-wide rule that every video must stop when its tab is no longer on screen. A browser can keep a media element playing while it preserves the tab, and a site can provide its own background or PiP behavior.
Why switching tabs does not automatically pause a video
Changing tabs and stopping media are separate actions
Chrome Help explains that media can continue when you move to another tab. That describes the browser’s general media behavior; the detailed support instructions are written for computer Chrome, so Android menus and controls may not match them exactly. A tab switch changes which page you are viewing, but it does not necessarily send a pause command to the player.

Web video normally has an explicit play state. Unless the browser, website, or operating system decides to suspend it, the player can remain in that state after the tab is hidden. This is why simply opening a new tab may leave the old video’s audio running.
Leaving the browser is a different test
Pressing Home, switching to another app, or locking the screen can trigger a different path from switching tabs. Some players stop when they lose visibility; others hand media controls to the operating system. A browser may also keep a page alive for a short time while it maintains playback. Consequently, a video that survives a tab switch is not proof that it will survive every other action, and a video that stops on Home is not evidence that tab switching always pauses media.
What Picture-in-Picture means on Android
PiP is the floating-window case
Android defines Picture-in-Picture as a small window pinned above other content while you navigate between apps or browse. The video remains visible, usually with play, pause, and close controls. If you can see a miniature player over another page, you are looking at PiP rather than ordinary hidden-tab playback.

PiP is a separate multi-window mode. An app must declare and implement support for it, so it is not a universal explanation for every video that keeps playing. A browser and the website’s player must cooperate with the feature. Device makers can also present the controls differently.
Close or pause a PiP window
- Tap the floating video once to display its controls.
- Tap pause if you want to keep the window available but stop playback.
- Tap the close button or drag the window to the indicated close area if you want to end PiP.
- If the window reappears, return to the browser tab and pause the original player there as well.
Closing a PiP window is not always the same as pausing the underlying service. A service can apply its own background-playback policy after PiP is dismissed, so verify that the audio has stopped.
Why audio can continue with no visible window
When only sound remains, treat the situation as background media playback rather than PiP. The player may still be active in the browser tab, while Android exposes playback controls in a media notification or quick media panel. Pull down the notification shade, find the browser’s media card, and press pause. If the card is not available, return to the browser, select the tab that contains the player, and pause it in the page.

Do not assume there is one Android setting that disables all background video or audio for every browser and website. Playback is affected by the browser, the site’s player implementation, audio focus, and the action that moved the player out of view. The labels and locations of media controls also vary by Android release and device manufacturer.

Chrome’s developer documentation describes a newer browser-initiated PiP feature. In Chrome 142, the browser can initiate PiP when a user switches tabs if specific conditions are met. The media must be in the top frame, have been audible recently, still be playing, and hold audio focus. The documentation says the purpose is that “This ensures that media content remains visible when you switch tabs.” The full explanation is in Chrome’s March 18, 2026 developer documentation.
Those conditions explain why two apparently similar videos can behave differently: one may qualify for automatic PiP while another remains hidden or pauses. They do not provide a universal Android fix. The documented activation path and examples target desktop Chrome, so do not copy a desktop flag, version instruction, or menu path into Android and expect it to work.

Chrome also documented automatic PiP behavior for web applications in Chrome 134 in a February 5, 2025 article. That is likewise browser- and implementation-specific, not evidence that every Android browser or every site will create a floating window.
Stop the video immediately
If a floating video is visible
- Tap the PiP window so its controls appear.
- Choose pause to stop playback without closing the window, or choose close to remove the window.
- Open the browser tab afterward if you need to confirm that the page’s player is paused.
If only audio is playing
- Swipe down from the top of the screen and locate the browser’s media notification or media panel.
- Press pause. If several players are listed, choose the one showing the browser or site you were watching.
- If no media control appears, switch back to the browser and pause the video directly in its tab.
- Lock and unlock the phone only after pausing; locking the screen is not a dependable stop command.
If the tab itself is open
Use the player’s own pause button before closing the tab or browser. Closing a tab normally ends that page’s player, but site-specific behavior and delayed controls can make the result look different for a moment. Confirm by checking that both the sound and any media notification have disappeared.
Troubleshoot playback that keeps returning
Record the setup before changing settings
Android does not have one documented settings path that covers every manufacturer, browser, and site. Write down the browser name and version, Android version, website, and player type. Also note whether you switched tabs, pressed Home, opened another app, or locked the screen. These details distinguish tab playback, PiP, and background audio.

Run a simple comparison
- Open a short video on the same site and pause it manually.
- Start it again, switch to another tab, and observe whether the picture floats, audio continues, or playback stops.
- Repeat by pressing Home, then repeat by locking the screen.
- Try a different website in the same browser. If only one site behaves this way, its player or account policy is the likely difference.
- Try the same site in another browser only as a diagnostic comparison; do not assume the second browser’s behavior is a universal Android rule.
This test changes one factor at a time and avoids guessing at a menu that may not exist on your phone.
Use the available media controls
When a notification or media panel appears, use it to pause the active session rather than swiping the notification away. Dismissing a card can hide the control without stopping the player. If the browser offers a PiP permission or playback option, its wording can differ by Android release, so follow the label shown on your device and verify the result with a short test.
Check whether the player is a service with separate rules
Some services distinguish PiP from background playback. YouTube’s Android help documentation describes background playback after dismissing its PiP player as available to Premium members in the case it covers. That subscription condition is specific to YouTube’s service and should not be generalized to other websites or browsers. For another site, look for that site’s own playback explanation instead of assuming the same entitlement or restriction applies.

Common explanations that are not enough on their own
- “I left the tab, so the browser must be broken.” Tab switching does not inherently issue a pause command.
- “Every continuing video is PiP.” PiP requires a visible floating window. Audio with no window is background media playback.
- “Closing PiP always ends playback.” A service may continue audio under its own background policy after PiP is dismissed.
- “A desktop Chrome instruction will fix Android.” Chrome’s automatic-PiP documentation identifies desktop activation paths and conditions; Android controls can differ.
- “There must be one global Android switch.” Official guidance does not establish a universal setting that disables all background media across devices, browsers, and sites.
Choose the behavior you actually want

When to seek device-specific instructions
If the same player starts again after you pause it, or if controls do not appear, obtain the exact browser version, Android version, device model, website, and account or subscription status. A support answer that omits those details can easily give you a desktop-only instruction or a menu label from another Android release. With the setup identified, consult the browser’s current help page and the website’s playback documentation, then test the result with a short video rather than assuming a setting changed all media behavior.
The practical rule is simple: a tab switch changes visibility, not necessarily playback. Use the visible PiP controls when a window is present; use the browser’s media notification or the original player when only audio remains. Treat automatic PiP and subscription-based background playback as features with specific eligibility rules, not as universal Android behavior.
