A USB-C cable can charge a phone without transferring data because charging and data transfer use different capabilities. The cable may be charge-only or faulty, or the phone may be set to charging mode. Try a cable that explicitly supports data transfer, then unlock the phone and check its USB connection mode.
Why a USB-C cable can charge but not transfer data
USB-C describes the connector, not every feature inside the cable
A USB-C plug does not guarantee that a cable supports data transfer, a particular speed, USB Power Delivery, or video. The USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) explains that manufacturers choose which performance and power features to implement; as its 2023 guidance puts it, “USB Type-C® is not USB 3.2 or USB4®.” USB-IF’s 2023 USB Type-C and USB 2.0 Type-C cable and connector guidelines distinguish the connector from those capabilities.
Some cables are charge-only or have a failed data path
A charge-only cable can carry power while omitting or disconnecting the D+ and D− data wires. Other cables may be faulty or nonstandard. Sony explains this distinction in its support guidance on USB cable data wires. A phone charging successfully therefore does not prove that its cable’s data connection works.
The phone may be set to charging mode
Even with a data-capable cable, an Android phone may charge without exposing files to the computer until you unlock it and select a transfer mode. Motorola’s instructions say to use a cable that supports data transfer and is not charging-only; its documented workflow is to open the “Charging this device via USB” notification and choose “Media device (MTP)” for general file transfer or “Camera (PTP)” for photos and videos. Motorola’s file-transfer instructions apply to its documented Android workflow; other manufacturers and Android versions may use different labels or steps.

How to troubleshoot USB file transfer
- Try a cable known to transfer data. Use one that explicitly supports data transfer and has the right connector at each end. If uncertain, test it with another device that transfers files. A charge-only cable will not work for file transfer.
- Unlock the phone and select a USB mode. On Motorola’s documented Android workflow, open the “Charging this device via USB” notification and choose “Media device (MTP)” for general files or “Camera (PTP)” for photos and videos. The exact menu can vary by phone and Android version.
- Check the computer connection. Reconnect both ends and try another USB port. Huawei advises using a standard USB cable because some nonstandard cables support charging only; its support guidance for phones or tablets that do not connect to a computer recommends replacing a cable that may be nonstandard or malfunctioning when no USB connection prompt appears.
- If the problem persists, seek model-specific support. If a second data-capable cable and another computer port do not help, consult the phone and computer makers’ support for your specific models. Charging with no data connection alone does not establish that the phone’s port is damaged.
What cable do you need?
For basic file movement, choose a cable explicitly described as supporting data transfer, with connector ends that fit both devices. You do not need the fastest cable available unless your devices and task call for a higher data rate. Check the phone, computer, and cable specifications together if you need faster transfers or video features.
USB-IF says a USB 2.0 Type-C cable supports USB 2.0 data operation up to 480 Mbps. That is a capability limit in the guidance, not a promise of real-world file-transfer throughput. A USB 2.0 Type-C cable does not support USB 3.2, USB4, or alternate-mode signals. USB-IF also notes that compliant USB-C to USB-C cable categories carry power-capability markings and that categories other than USB 2.0 High-Speed USB-C to USB-C must carry the appropriate data-rate marking. Because of that USB 2.0 exception, check the product specifications rather than expecting every cable to show a speed logo. See USB-IF’s cable and connector information.

Apple provides a model-specific example: its included USB-C cable supports charging and USB 2 speeds, while certain Pro iPhone models support USB 3.2 Gen 2 speeds up to 10 Gbit/s with an optional USB 3 cable. That maximum applies to those models and a suitable cable; it is not a general iPhone or Android transfer rate. Apple’s USB-C iPhone charging and connection guidance was published on 2026-03-17.

When should you replace the cable or ask for help?
- Replace or stop using the cable if it only charges, has visible damage, or fails to transfer data while a known-good cable works. Do not assume a cable is data-capable just because it has USB-C plugs.
- Check the phone’s USB mode first if the computer sees the phone but not its files; the phone may still be in charging mode.
- Get device-specific support if multiple data-capable cables and computer ports fail. The symptom by itself cannot identify a single cause or prove a damaged phone port.
