A refrigerator can shut down a portable power station because its compressor needs a short startup surge that may be several times higher than its normal running demand. If that surge exceeds the station’s inverter output or surge capability, overload protection can cut AC power. A station can also stop because of combined loads, low battery or input voltage, overheating, or an appliance-side fault.
The reliable way to diagnose the problem is to identify whether the station’s AC output actually stopped, compare the refrigerator’s documented starting requirement with the station’s continuous and surge ratings, remove other loads, and then follow the exact manuals for both models.
What happens when the compressor starts
A refrigerator compressor is a motor load. Once the thermostat calls for cooling, the motor must accelerate from a standstill. That acceleration briefly draws more current than the compressor uses after it reaches normal speed. The portable station’s inverter must supply this transient demand through its AC outlet.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesJackery Support describes refrigerator startup demand as typically three to seven times the rated power, while stressing that the actual value varies by brand and model. That range is category-level guidance, not a guaranteed specification for your refrigerator. An inverter owner’s manual hosted by Farnell gives a broader rule that some induction motors need two to six times their wattage rating to start and uses a factor of five for compressor-based refrigerators and freezers. Those figures are sizing guidance from particular documents, not universal refrigerator measurements.

If the inverter cannot provide the required starting surge, its protection circuit may disconnect the AC output even when the refrigerator’s printed running wattage appears to fit within the station’s normal output rating.
Continuous watts, surge watts and watt-hours answer different questions
Compatibility requires three separate checks. The first two concern instantaneous power; the third concerns stored energy.
| Specification | What it tells you | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Refrigerator running or rated watts | Approximate power while the compressor is already operating normally | Compare it with the station’s continuous AC output, while allowing room for other connected loads |
| Refrigerator startup watts | The brief demand when the compressor starts | Compare it with the station’s stated surge or startup capability and duration |
| Station continuous AC output | Power the inverter can deliver on an ongoing basis | Ensure the running load stays within this limit |
| Station surge or startup output | Short-term power available for motor starting | Ensure the compressor’s documented starting demand fits this rating |
| Battery capacity in watt-hours (Wh) | Stored energy available over time | Use it to assess runtime, not to prove that the inverter can start the compressor |
A large battery does not automatically mean a powerful inverter. One station may store enough energy to run a refrigerator for a useful period but still fail at compressor startup. The reverse is also possible: an inverter may start the refrigerator successfully, while the battery is too small to sustain the desired runtime.

Use the symptom to narrow the cause
| Observed behavior | Most plausible causes | First checks |
|---|---|---|
| AC output trips at the instant the compressor starts | Startup demand exceeds the station’s capability, or another load raises the combined surge | Disconnect every other device; check the refrigerator’s startup requirement and both station output ratings |
| The refrigerator works alone but trips the station when other devices are connected | Combined running load or overlapping startup surges exceed available output | Compare total load and start high-power appliances one at a time |
| The station runs for a while, becomes hot, and then shuts off | Overtemperature protection caused by restricted airflow, a warm environment, or sustained load | Clear ventilation openings, move the unit to a cooler location, and read its cooling and restart instructions |
| Shutdown occurs as the battery approaches depletion | Low-battery or low-input-voltage protection | Check the state-of-charge display and warning message; recharge according to the station manual |
| The compressor stops but the station’s AC indicator remains on | Normal thermostat cycling or a refrigerator-side issue | Confirm whether AC power actually disappeared before diagnosing the station |
These are possibilities rather than a diagnosis of an unseen setup. Error codes, voltage thresholds and restart behavior differ by model.
Normal compressor cycling is not the same as a station shutdown
A thermostat normally starts and stops a refrigerator compressor to maintain the selected temperature. Midea’s service documentation states that a thermostat generally controls when the compressor starts and stops. During a normal cycle, the station should continue supplying AC power even though the compressor is temporarily silent.
Watch the station’s display or AC-output indicator when the refrigerator stops. If the outlet remains active and other equipment continues to run, the refrigerator may simply have reached its thermostat set point. If the station display goes dark, reports overload, or disables its AC output, investigate the station protection conditions instead.

Step-by-step troubleshooting procedure
- Identify what actually stopped. Determine whether only the compressor stopped or whether the power station disabled its AC output. Check the AC icon, outlet indicator, display and any audible alarm.
- Record the exact equipment and message. Write down the refrigerator make and model, station model, displayed error, battery percentage, ambient conditions and the moment the shutdown occurs. Manuals are model-specific, so these details matter.
- Find the refrigerator’s steady and starting requirements. Check its nameplate and manual for rated watts, locked-rotor or startup watts, compressor information, or a stated starting-current value. If the startup figure is absent, ask the refrigerator manufacturer; Jackery Support specifically recommends confirming it with the appliance maker.
- Read both station output ratings. Verify continuous AC watts and the stated surge or startup capability, including how long the surge can be delivered if the manual specifies a duration. Do not substitute the battery’s Wh figure for either output rating.
- Remove every other AC load. Test the refrigerator by itself. This isolates a combined-load problem but does not, by itself, prove that either appliance is defective.
- Check operating conditions. Confirm that the station has adequate airflow, is not sitting in direct heat, and has sufficient charge. Look for separate overload, low-voltage and overtemperature warnings rather than assuming every shutdown is an overload.
- Apply the model’s recovery procedure. Remove the overload or correct the indicated condition before restarting. An inverter manual hosted by Farnell instructs users of that equipment to remove the overload and wait at least three minutes before switching on again. Promate’s manual gives different, model-specific instructions, including its own cooling procedure. Never transfer those timings or voltage thresholds to another station.
- Stop repeated failed starts. If the refrigerator repeatedly hums, clicks, fails to accelerate or trips protection while the station otherwise remains within its ratings, stop cycling it and arrange qualified appliance service.
Why adding another appliance can trigger the shutdown
The station must supply the refrigerator’s running load plus every other connected load. A second device can consume the remaining continuous capacity, and two motors can demand their startup surges at the same time. Jackery’s compressor-load guidance recommends checking the total load and operating high-power appliances one at a time where possible.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For diagnosis, unplug heaters, kettles, microwaves, tools, pumps and other high-demand equipment before testing the refrigerator. Once the refrigerator starts reliably, reconnect devices individually while watching the station’s load display. If the shutdown returns only after a particular device is added, the combined demand is the practical limit even if each appliance appears acceptable by itself.
Heat and ventilation can cause a delayed shutdown
A station that runs normally at first but turns off after sustained operation may be protecting its inverter from excessive temperature. Restricted vents, a hot room, direct sun or a heavy continuous load can reduce the available thermal margin. The Promate 120 operator manual lists poor ventilation and warm conditions among the causes to check for its model and describes a 15-minute cooling instruction for its own overtemperature condition.

That 15-minute direction belongs only to the named Promate unit. Other stations may require a different cool-down period, a manual reset, or service. Keep the station on a hard, open surface, leave every ventilation opening unobstructed, and follow the exact temperature and restart guidance in its manual.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Low battery and input-voltage protection
As the battery is depleted, the station may disable AC output to protect the cells or inverter. A warning can also indicate low input voltage rather than an overload. Recharge the station and repeat the test with no other loads. If it works when fully charged but fails near the bottom of the battery gauge, low-voltage protection is more plausible than an excessive compressor surge.

How to choose or assess a station for refrigerator use
Evaluate a station on separate axes rather than relying on a single “refrigerator compatible” label:
- Continuous AC output: must cover the refrigerator’s running demand and any loads that will remain connected.
- Surge capability: must cover the documented compressor starting demand for the required duration.
- Starting compatibility: the refrigerator and station specifications should be compared directly; a generic multiplier cannot replace model data.
- Watt-hour capacity: determines how much operating time is available after the compressor starts, subject to inverter losses and cycling.
- Protection behavior: review overload, low-voltage, overtemperature and restart instructions before relying on the station for unattended cooling.
If the refrigerator’s starting requirement is unknown, obtaining that value is more useful than selecting a station solely by battery size. A refrigerator with a documented lower startup demand, or a setup that avoids simultaneous high-power loads, may solve the problem without changing every part of the system.
When the refrigerator itself may be at fault
If the station remains on and within its ratings but the refrigerator repeatedly fails to start, the appliance may have a supply-voltage problem, faulty start relay, thermal protector issue or compressor fault. Midea’s service documentation lists those kinds of appliance-side possibilities for the covered wine cooler. Persistent humming, clicking, rapid thermal cut-outs or an unusually long failure to start warrant qualified appliance service.
Do not conclude that the power station is defective from one shutdown. Overload, low battery, excessive temperature and refrigerator-side faults are distinct conditions, and the station’s display and manual are the best way to separate them.
Key figures and their limits
- Three to seven times rated power: Jackery Support, published or updated July 2, 2026, describes this as a typical refrigerator startup range and notes model variation.
- Two to six times rated wattage: an inverter owner’s manual hosted by Farnell gives this as a general induction-motor starting range.
- Factor of five: the same Farnell-hosted manual uses five as its sizing factor for compressor refrigerators and freezers.
- 200 W AC limit and voltage thresholds: figures in the Promate 120 manual apply only to that named station and are not general sizing limits.
No measured startup wattage for a particular refrigerator is established here. Your refrigerator’s make, model, compressor design and operating condition determine the actual requirement.
