If a drive vanishes after your computer wakes, first check whether Windows still detects the disk. If it appears in Disk Management but has no drive letter, the problem may be limited to the volume; if it is absent there, check its connection, power, controller, and health. A mapped network drive needs a separate network check. The symptom alone does not establish that sleep caused the problem.

First identify which kind of drive disappeared

“Drive” can refer to an internal SATA or NVMe disk, an external USB drive, or a mapped network drive. Start by checking whether the item is missing only from File Explorer or also from Windows’ disk and device tools.

  • Internal disk: Check Disk Management and Device Manager to see whether Windows detects the physical disk.
  • External USB disk: Check Disk Management, then inspect its power and physical connection.
  • Mapped network drive: Check whether the computer is connected to the network and whether the mapping has reconnected. A mapped drive is not a local disk.

Check Disk Management before changing anything

  1. Right-click Start and select Disk Management.
  2. Find the affected disk and note its status and the state of its partition. Do not initialize or format it if you need files on it.
  3. If the disk is Online and its partition is Healthy but has no drive letter, investigate the missing letter rather than treating the disk as physically absent.
  4. If it is Offline or Missing, check the connection, power, controller, and disk before trying to reactivate it.
  5. If the volume is RAW or the space appears unallocated, do not format it or create a new volume when your goal is to recover existing files. Microsoft warns that formatting erases data and advises skipping those steps for data recovery. See Microsoft’s Disk Management troubleshooting guidance.

Disk Management can help distinguish a missing drive letter from a disk Windows does not currently see, but the status alone does not prove which component is at fault.

If an external USB drive disappeared

  1. Check that the drive has power and that its cable is fully connected.
  2. Disconnect and reconnect it, then use Disk Management to rescan disks.
  3. Connect the drive directly to the computer instead of through a USB hub, and try another port.
  4. Try a known-good cable that fits the drive.
  5. If possible, test it on another computer. If it reappears, update your backup before relying on it again.

These checks follow Microsoft’s missing-disk troubleshooting steps. A different port or computer can help narrow down the problem, but it does not by itself prove that the drive or PC has failed.

If the disk is absent or reports a device problem

Open Device Manager and check whether Windows reports an error for the disk or its related device. Note the disk model, connection type, Windows version, sleep mode, and any storage errors around the time the computer resumed. Those details are useful when deciding whether to investigate the disk, controller, connection, or system configuration.

Microsoft says there can be many reasons a disk is missing or fails to initialize, and that a failing disk is the most common reason within its Disk Management troubleshooting guidance. That is not a diagnosis of any particular drive. If the disk returns, back up important files; if it keeps disconnecting or produces data errors, prioritize preserving data and seek manufacturer or support guidance rather than repeatedly cycling sleep.

Why sleep and wake can be part of the chain

Windows supports different sleep states, including S1–S3 and Modern Standby, and not every computer supports the same states. During sleep, devices can enter lower-power states; during wake, they transition back toward active operation. Microsoft’s storage-device guidance says that when the system wakes, a storage device transitions back to D0. Modern Standby can also power peripheral devices down after idle timeouts.

This makes power-state behavior one possibility to investigate, not proof that a particular power setting caused a disappearance. The actual cause could also be a loose or failing connection, disk or controller trouble, or a network reconnection issue. See Microsoft’s storage hardware power-management guidance for its stated scope: OEMs and device manufacturers using Microsoft in-box SATA or NVMe drivers on Windows 10 May 2019 Update or newer.

If the missing drive is mapped over a network

First confirm that the computer has network access and determine whether the mapping is disconnected or simply unavailable after resume. Do not troubleshoot it as though it were a local disk in Disk Management.

Microsoft documents a specific mapped-drive resume issue for domain systems running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2: the server-side SMB session can be deleted. In that scenario, access may fail briefly after resume, and Office files may be unsavable during the first 30 seconds after hibernation. This is a version- and network-specific case, not a general explanation for current Windows systems. Details are in Microsoft’s support article.

Take disk-health warnings seriously

Windows storage health warnings can indicate low spare capacity, degraded reliability linked to media or NVM subsystem errors, or read-only mode. Microsoft recommends backing up and checking disk properties when these warnings appear. The documented monitoring covers NVMe/NVM SSDs, not SATA SSDs or hard disk drives, so the absence of such a warning does not establish that those other drive types are healthy. See Microsoft’s Windows storage health guidance.
