A down jacket usually feels colder when its insulation has lost loft, become damp or clumped, shifted away from parts of the jacket, or escaped through a hole. Check the care label first. If washing is allowed, clean it gently, rinse it thoroughly, then dry it exactly as directed until the down inside is completely dry. A patch can stop further fill loss from a small hole, but neither washing nor patching replaces down that is already missing.

Why a down jacket can feel colder

Down keeps you warm by forming loft: the fill expands into a layer that traps air. When that fill is fluffy and spread through the jacket’s baffles, it can provide insulation. When it is flattened, damp, dirty, oily or bunched into clumps, the jacket may have less effective coverage and feel colder. A jacket can also lose warmth if down leaks through a damaged shell or the fill shifts so that some baffles have thin or empty areas.

Compression is another possible contributor. Keeping a jacket packed tightly for long-term storage can affect the fill’s quality. A jacket that has simply been compressed for a short time may need an opportunity to loft again, but persistent flatness or missing fill points to a different problem than temporary compression.

There is no established universal percentage for how much warmth a jacket loses or regains through washing or drying. The practical aim is to restore the fill’s cleanliness, dryness and even distribution where possible—not to assume that any care method will return every jacket to its original condition.

Find the cause before choosing a fix

Inspect the jacket in good light, paying attention to the baffles—the stitched compartments that hold the down. Compare the areas that feel cold with the areas that still feel puffy. The pattern helps distinguish a care problem from a leak or structural issue.

  • Dampness: If the jacket is wet, recently washed or has clumps that feel damp, complete the label-approved drying process before judging its warmth.
  • Grime or oil: Visible dirt, body oils or a generally flat appearance may indicate that cleaning is appropriate, if the care label permits it.
  • Uneven fill: A few unusually full baffles beside thin ones suggest that the fill may need gentle redistribution during drying.
  • Escaping feathers or a shell hole: Treat this as a repair issue. Washing will not close the opening or replace fill that has already escaped.
  • Persistent empty patches: If a section remains thin after careful drying and gentle redistribution, the jacket may need assessment by its manufacturer or a gear-repair professional.

Do not pull a feather back through a shell opening if doing so could enlarge the hole. That can make the leak worse rather than fix it.

Choose the right care option

The label determines which methods are safe for your particular jacket. Garments differ: one may allow machine washing and tumble drying while another may not. Check the label before choosing a wash cycle, water temperature or dryer setting. If the label prohibits machine washing or tumble drying, follow that direction and ask the manufacturer or a cleaner familiar with down garments for suitable care.

What you find Practical option When it makes sense
A small mark, with no broader loss of loft Spot-clean When local cleaning is enough and the garment’s care instructions allow it.
Widespread dirt or oily fill, and washing is permitted Wash at home Use a gentle cycle and a detergent permitted by the label; rinse thoroughly.
Clumps after washing, with a dryer setting allowed Tumble-dry at the approved low or medium-low setting Pause to shake and work the baffles, then continue until the fill is dry inside.
Dryer use is prohibited or no suitable dryer is available Air-dry flat in a ventilated area Shake regularly, gently loosen clumps as they dry, and allow extra time.
A small shell hole or leaking fill Apply a suitable repair patch To limit further loss. A patch cannot replace fill already missing.
A delicate garment or care instructions you cannot safely meet Ask the manufacturer or a suitable professional cleaner Especially when the label rules out the household equipment you have.

These methods are not interchangeable. Spot-cleaning may be all a lightly marked jacket needs, while a hole calls for a shell repair rather than another wash. Manufacturer advice on washing frequency also varies: Rab recommends washing about once per season or sooner if the jacket is visibly dirty or the fill looks flat or clumpy; Fjällräven advises spot-cleaning minor marks and washing only when needed. Those are recommendations for care, not a universal schedule for every garment.

How to wash a down jacket when the label allows it

  1. Read the care label. Confirm that washing is permitted and follow its directions for the machine, water temperature and cycle. If it rules out machine washing, do not proceed with a home machine wash.
  2. Decide whether a full wash is necessary. Spot-clean a small mark if that is sufficient and allowed. Wash the whole jacket only when the condition of the garment calls for it.
  3. Choose an allowed cleaner. Use a down-specific cleaner or another detergent expressly permitted by the jacket’s label. Avoid fabric softener. Some gear-care guidance recommends down-specific detergent, but the garment’s instructions take precedence.
  4. Use a gentle cycle and rinse thoroughly. Follow the label’s wash settings. Thorough rinsing matters because residue left in the garment can interfere with the fill’s loft.
  5. Support the wet jacket when moving it. Wet down is heavy, so handle the garment carefully rather than pulling or twisting it.

If the jacket feels flat or clumpy immediately after washing, do not assume the insulation is ruined. Rab notes that clumping after washing usually means the jacket has not dried properly. Continue with the appropriate drying method and handle the wet fill gently.

Dry it fully: the essential recovery step

Drying is where much of the practical restoration happens. The outside fabric can feel dry while the down inside remains damp, so surface feel alone is not a reliable finish line. Do not wear or store the jacket until the fill is fully dry. Damp down can remain clumped and fail to loft properly.

If tumble drying is permitted

  1. Use the low or medium-low heat setting approved by the jacket’s label; do not substitute a hotter setting for speed.
  2. Pause the dryer periodically. Take the jacket out, shake it gently, and pat or carefully work the baffles to help separate clumps and redistribute fill.
  3. If the label allows, add clean dryer balls or clean tennis balls. They may help break up clumps during tumbling, but they are optional and do not replace checking the jacket.
  4. Return the jacket to the dryer and repeat the checks. Inspect thick baffles and areas where fill has clumped, and keep drying until the insulation is dry inside.

If you need to air-dry

  1. Lay the jacket flat, or place it in a well-ventilated area as the care instructions allow.
  2. Shake it regularly while it dries. Gently work apart clumps as the fill becomes easier to separate; avoid rough handling of wet insulation.
  3. Give it enough time for the down inside to dry completely. Do not put it away while any part of the fill remains damp.

Air-drying can take attention because the jacket needs to be moved and checked as it dries. If your label does not allow tumble drying, do not use the dryer simply because it might be quicker. When the care instructions and your equipment do not offer a clear safe method, ask the manufacturer or a cleaner experienced with down garments.

Repair shell holes and escaping fill

A small hole is a different problem from dirty or clumped insulation. Patch it promptly with a suitable repair patch to limit additional leakage. Gear-care guidance from Fjällräven and GEAR AID discusses adhesive patches for shell holes and leaking down. Choose a repair suitable for the shell and follow its application instructions.

A patch closes or covers the damaged area; it does not put escaped down back into the jacket. If the tear is large, the damage affects a seam, or a baffle is substantially empty, have the garment assessed by its manufacturer or a gear-repair professional. Available repairs depend on the individual jacket, so a professional assessment is more useful than assuming a patch will solve every leak.

What to do if the jacket is still cold

Once the garment is completely dry, check whether the fill is spread reasonably evenly and whether the shell still has any openings. If clumps remain, gently loosen and redistribute them without forcing or tearing the fabric. Persistent empty sections, damage, or no improvement after careful drying warrant an assessment by the manufacturer or a gear-repair professional.

Care guidance does not establish a universal recovery rate, and the result depends on the jacket’s condition. Cleaning and drying can help when dirt, moisture or clumping is the issue; they cannot restore fill that has escaped or repair structural damage. If the jacket remains uneven or cold after the care steps, avoid repeated washing as a substitute for identifying the cause.

Store the jacket to preserve its loft

Before putting a down jacket away, make sure it is clean and fully dry. Store it loosely in a dry, ventilated place rather than leaving it packed tightly for long-term storage. This reduces prolonged compression and helps avoid putting damp insulation away where it may stay clumped.

For future care, use spot-cleaning for minor marks when the label permits, and wash only when needed. The appropriate schedule and method depend on the garment; the care label remains the best guide.
