A 1 TB SSD usually appears as about 931 GB in Windows because the drive maker and Windows are using different unit conventions. The label’s 1 TB means 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Windows commonly expresses that same byte count using 1,073,741,824-byte units, producing about 931.3 of those units. The display difference is normally a measurement issue, not 69 GB of storage that has vanished.

The short explanation: 1 TB is decimal, while Windows commonly displays binary-sized units

Storage manufacturers define a terabyte in decimal terms. One terabyte is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, or 1,000 decimal gigabytes. Many Windows capacity displays, however, divide the byte count by 1,073,741,824 bytes, the size of a binary gibibyte (230 bytes). Dividing the advertised capacity by that larger unit gives the familiar Windows figure:

1,000,000,000,000 bytes ÷ 1,073,741,824 bytes ≈ 931.3

Windows commonly rounds that result and labels it “931 GB.” Technically, the precise binary unit is GiB, not GB. In everyday Windows screens and support articles, the shorter “GB” label is still widely used.

What the numbers actually represent

Display or label Meaning Byte value
1 TB on the SSD package One decimal terabyte 1,000,000,000,000 bytes
1,000 GB in decimal notation 1,000 × 1,000,000,000 bytes 1,000,000,000,000 bytes
About 931 GB in a Windows display Approximately 931 binary-sized units About 931 × 1,073,741,824 bytes

The two figures are not measurements of two different physical capacities. They are two ways of expressing the same underlying bytes. Saying that Windows has removed 69 GB would compare unlike units and imply a loss that the conversion does not show.

The apparent difference is easier to understand if you hold the byte count constant. A decimal gigabyte contains 1,000,000,000 bytes, while a binary gibibyte contains 1,073,741,824 bytes. Since each binary unit is larger, fewer of those units are needed to describe the same SSD. The number changes; the stored bytes do not.

Why manufacturers use decimal terabytes

Decimal prefixes scale by powers of 1,000: a kilobyte is 1,000 bytes, a megabyte is 1,000,000 bytes, and a gigabyte is 1,000,000,000 bytes. A decimal terabyte therefore contains 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. SSD specifications, product packaging and manufacturer capacity tables use this convention so capacities can be compared consistently across storage products.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Binary computing units scale by powers of 1,024. A gibibyte is 1,024 × 1,024 × 1,024 bytes, or 1,073,741,824 bytes. Because a binary unit is larger than a decimal gigabyte, the numerical count is smaller when the same drive is expressed in binary units.

This convention is not unique to one SSD brand. The same decimal labeling is used for hard drives, USB flash drives, memory cards and other storage media. Seagate’s capacity table, for example, pairs a 1 TB (1,000 GB) product label with about 931 GB in Windows, while Kingston shows the calculation directly.

Is 931 GB normal for a 1 TB SSD?

For a nominal 1 TB drive, a whole-disk reading around 931 GB (approximately 931.3 GiB before rounding) is the expected result of the unit conversion. Seagate’s capacity table uses the same relationship: a 1 TB (1,000 GB) label corresponds to about 931 GB in Windows. Kingston’s worked calculation divides 1,000,000,000,000 by 1,073,741,824 and reaches approximately 931 GB.

The exact number can vary slightly by utility because of rounding and because different screens may show the physical disk, a partition, or free space. A reading near 931 GB for the complete device is therefore not, by itself, evidence of faulty NAND flash or a counterfeit SSD.

Whole-disk capacity is different from usable space

Unit conversion explains the move from 1 TB to roughly 931 GB, but it does not explain every smaller number you might see. Windows can report several different quantities:

  • Physical-disk capacity: the byte capacity reported by the SSD itself.
  • Partition capacity: the size assigned to a particular volume on the disk.
  • Formatted capacity: the space remaining after a file system is created and its metadata structures are allocated.
  • Free space: the portion of a formatted partition that is currently available for files.

A 1 TB SSD can therefore show about 931 GB as the physical device while its main partition has slightly less usable space. Recovery partitions, an EFI system partition, an unused region, file-system metadata and reserved areas all reduce the space available in the volume you use for documents. Those deductions are separate from the decimal-to-binary conversion.

Do not compare a package label with a File Explorer free-space number. The package describes the entire device before partitioning and formatting. Free space describes what remains in one mounted volume after Windows, applications, system files and your own data have been accounted for. These are different measurements even when they refer to the same SSD.

How to compare capacity readings correctly

When two tools show different figures, compare three things before troubleshooting:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Exact bytes: Find the raw byte count if the utility provides it. A nominal 1 TB device should be close to 1,000,000,000,000 bytes.
  2. Unit convention: Check whether the screen is using decimal GB/TB or binary-sized GiB/TiB while labeling it with the shorter GB/TB terms.
  3. Scope: Determine whether the value refers to the whole physical disk, one partition, formatted capacity or currently free space.

These comparisons prevent a normal unit conversion from being confused with a partitioning issue. They also explain why two Windows utilities can round the same device differently without either one indicating a failing SSD.

How to check what Windows is showing

Check the volume in File Explorer

  1. Open File Explorer and select This PC.
  2. Right-click the SSD’s volume and choose Properties.
  3. Note the Capacity, Used space and Free space values.

This view describes a formatted volume, not necessarily every byte on the physical SSD. If the capacity is lower than expected, inspect the disk layout before drawing a conclusion.

Inspect the complete disk in Disk Management

  1. Right-click the Windows Start button and select Disk Management.
  2. Find the SSD by matching its disk number and approximate size.
  3. Look for the total disk size, the main partition, any unallocated region and small system or recovery partitions.

Disk Management lets you distinguish a whole-disk reading from the size of one partition. Do not delete a system or recovery partition merely to recover a small amount of space; those partitions may be required for startup or recovery.

Get-Disk | Select-Object Number,FriendlyName,Size

The Size value is reported in bytes. A nominal 1 TB SSD should be close to 1,000,000,000,000 bytes before you account for how another utility rounds or labels the result. To inspect volumes and their sizes, run:

Get-Volume | Select-Object DriveLetter,FileSystemLabel,FileSystem,Size,SizeRemaining

Compare the physical disk’s byte count with the volume’s size and remaining space. This prevents a free-space figure from being mistaken for the SSD’s total capacity.

When a lower number deserves investigation

The conversion is a good explanation only when the reported total is in the expected range. Investigate further if the complete physical disk is materially below the approximately 931 GB binary-sized result or if the device’s byte count is far below 1,000,000,000,000 bytes.

Check the partition layout

Unallocated space may exist because the drive was previously partitioned, cloned to a smaller volume, or left with a deliberately separated data area. Disk Management will show unallocated space as a distinct region. Extending a partition can use that space, but back up important data first and verify that the unallocated region is adjacent to the partition you intend to enlarge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check formatting and file-system overhead

Formatting creates structures that organize files and track free space. The overhead is normally modest, but the usable capacity of a formatted volume will not exactly equal the physical disk’s reported capacity. Compare the volume’s size with the disk total rather than comparing free space with the package label.

Verify the device identity and byte count

If the byte count is unexpectedly small, confirm that you selected the correct disk in Disk Management or PowerShell. External enclosures, storage controllers and virtualization layers can expose a logical size that differs from the underlying device. Also check whether the drive is a smaller model than the label or order record indicates.

Consider a reporting or hardware problem only after the checks

A substantially incorrect whole-disk byte count is not explained by the normal decimal/binary convention alone. At that point, review the SSD manufacturer’s diagnostic guidance, firmware information and purchase documentation. The 931 GB conversion should not be used to dismiss a large unexplained discrepancy.

Common misconceptions

“Windows took 69 GB from my SSD”

No. The apparent 69-unit difference comes from dividing the same 1,000,000,000,000 bytes by a 1,073,741,824-byte unit instead of a 1,000,000,000-byte unit. Nothing in that arithmetic indicates that data was erased.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“GB and GiB are interchangeable”

They are often used interchangeably in consumer interfaces, but they are different units. GB means 1,000,000,000 bytes; GiB means 1,073,741,824 bytes. Calling the Windows result “about 931 GB” matches common screen labels, while “about 931 GiB” is the technically precise description of the binary-sized quantity.

“The formatted volume must equal the package capacity”

The package describes the physical device using decimal bytes. A formatted partition can be smaller because of the unit convention, partition boundaries, system partitions and file-system structures. Compare like with like: physical disk to physical disk, partition to partition, and free space to free space.

A practical decision guide

  • About 931 GB for the complete 1 TB disk: normal unit conversion.
  • About 931 GB for the disk, but less on the main volume: inspect partitions and formatting.
  • Large unallocated area: review the partition layout and extend a volume only after backing up data.
  • Physical byte count far below 1,000,000,000,000: verify the disk identity, connection, controller or enclosure and consult device diagnostics.
  • Only free space is low: remove or move files, or investigate disk usage; this is not a capacity-label problem.

Does this apply only to SSDs?

No. The same convention applies to hard disk drives, USB flash drives, memory cards and other storage media whose manufacturers specify decimal capacity. A 500 GB product can likewise appear as approximately 465 GB in Windows. The principle is tied to how capacity is measured and displayed, not to whether the storage uses flash memory or magnetic platters.

What to remember

A labeled 1 TB SSD contains 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Expressing those bytes in 1,073,741,824-byte binary units yields about 931.3, which Windows commonly displays as 931 GB. Treat that figure as normal when it describes the complete physical disk. If the whole-disk byte count is much lower, or if the missing space appears only in a partition, investigate the disk layout and reporting details separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 931 GB the correct capacity for a 1 TB SSD?

Yes, when Windows is showing the complete device in binary-sized units. A decimal 1 TB equals 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, which is about 931.3 GiB and is commonly rounded to 931 GB.

Has Windows or the SSD manufacturer taken 69 GB?

No. The apparent difference comes from expressing the same bytes with different unit sizes. It is not evidence that 69 GB of data was erased.

Why does my main partition show less than 931 GB?

The main volume may not occupy the whole disk. EFI or recovery partitions, unallocated space, partition boundaries and file-system structures can reduce its capacity separately from the decimal-to-binary conversion.

How can I verify the SSD’s real size?

Use Disk Management to inspect the whole physical disk and its partitions, then use PowerShell’s Get-Disk command to read the exact Size value in bytes. Compare that byte count with the volume size and free space.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Does the same calculation apply to hard drives and USB drives?

Yes. Manufacturers generally specify those products in decimal capacity too, so a 500 GB product may appear as about 465 GB in Windows for the same unit-conversion reason.

When should I suspect a faulty or incorrectly identified drive?

Investigate when the complete physical disk’s byte count is far below 1,000,000,000,000 bytes for a labeled 1 TB model. Confirm the disk identity, partition layout, enclosure or controller, and then consult the manufacturer’s diagnostics.

The Bottom Line

A 1 TB SSD shows about 931 GB in Windows because 1,000,000,000,000 decimal bytes are being expressed in 1,073,741,824-byte binary units. That is normally expected. Check the whole-disk byte count and partition layout before treating a lower usable-space figure as a hardware problem.
