Your eyes close when you sneeze because eyelid closure is part of the involuntary reflex that coordinates a sneeze. It is not needed to keep your eyeballs from popping out: clinical sources say an ordinary sneeze does not raise pressure in your eyes, and sneezing with your eyes open is possible.
Why do my eyes close when I sneeze?
A sneeze is a coordinated reflex, not just a burst of air. Irritation in the nose sends sensory signals along trigeminal pathways; the sneeze response then coordinates actions such as breathing in, forcefully breathing out, and closing the eyes. A review of the sneeze reflex describes these linked movements, while Mayo Clinic Health System optometrist Bert Moritz calls eye closure “an involuntary reflex.”
In other words, your eyelids usually shut automatically as the sneeze response unfolds. That does not mean you consciously choose to close them, or that the eyelids have to seal shut for a sneeze to happen.

Will my eyes pop out if I keep them open?
No. The idea that your eyes must close to stop them from being forced out is a myth. Mayo Clinic says the pressure people may feel across the face before a sneeze does not increase in the eyes, and Cleveland Clinic says eyes will not pop out from sneezing with them open. The eyelids are not holding the eyeballs in place against sneeze pressure.

Can you sneeze with your eyes open?
Yes. Cleveland Clinic notes, “It’s possible to sneeze with your eyes open.” Because closing the eyes is a reflex, keeping them open may take concentration, but it is not physically impossible. You do not need to try to override the reflex; letting your eyes close is normal.
Is eye closure meant to protect your eyes from germs?
The reviewed clinical sources establish that eyelid closure accompanies the sneeze reflex, but they do not establish a definitive purpose for it. It may sound plausible that closed eyelids shield the eyes from droplets, but that is not proven as the reason they shut. The most reliable answer is about mechanism: eye closure is an automatic part of a coordinated response to nasal irritation, while its specific purpose remains uncertain.

Why do I sneeze when I look at a bright light?
Some people sneeze in response to bright light, a phenomenon Cleveland Clinic calls photic sneezing. The clinic describes it as a hereditary trait and says researchers are not certain how it works. It is a separate question from why eyelids close during a sneeze: light can be one trigger for sneezing, but evidence about light-triggered sneezing does not establish why the eyelids join the sneeze response. Research discussed by the National Eye Institute examines neural mechanisms in mice, not proof of the human eyelid-closure mechanism.

Nasal irritation is a common trigger: the sneeze reflex helps clear the nose when its lining is irritated. Dust, pollen, viruses, and allergies are among the triggers listed by Cleveland Clinic. Bright light can trigger sneezing in some people as well. These different triggers can lead to the sneeze response, including its usual accompanying eyelid closure.
