Black bars usually appear because the video’s aspect ratio—the relationship between its width and height—does not match your phone’s screen or the player window. The player keeps the entire picture at its original proportions, so unused space remains above, below, or beside the image. This is normal and does not, by itself, mean your phone or video is damaged.
What the black bars are telling you
Every video frame and every phone display is a rectangle, but those rectangles are not always shaped alike. A widescreen video, a portrait recording, a square clip and a tall phone screen each have different proportions. If a player tried to fill every pixel while preserving the video’s proportions, it could not show the whole frame whenever the shapes differed.
The usual solution is to fit the complete frame inside the available player area. The remaining area is displayed as a solid color, often black. Apple’s playback guidance describes this as fit-to-screen, or aspect, mode: “the entire video is visible onscreen, and letterboxing or pillarboxing occurs as needed.” Apple also advises displaying video at its original aspect ratio.

Bars above and below: letterboxing
Horizontal bars at the top and bottom are called letterboxing. They commonly occur when a relatively wide video is shown inside a taller display or player window. The picture remains intact, while the unused height becomes bars.

Bars at the sides: pillarboxing
Vertical bars on the left and right are called pillarboxing. They are common when a portrait or square video is shown in a wider player area. The player leaves side space rather than stretching the image sideways.
Bars on more than one pair of sides
If you see bars at the top, bottom and sides, the file may already contain padding around the actual picture. Another possibility is that the original image was placed inside a frame whose proportions differ from both the phone and the content. Vimeo’s player guidance notes that bars can be part of the video itself or result from a mismatch between the video and its player.
Why a phone screen and a video frame do not match
Phones are designed to be used in both portrait and landscape orientations, while video files may have been produced for television, desktop playback, social feeds or another device. A phone can therefore show a wide clip in a tall window, a tall clip in a wide window, or a square clip in either one.
The player also has its own usable rectangle. Controls, captions, browser elements and other interface areas can reduce the space available for the picture. A video can fit the player correctly while still leaving space inside the physical screen.
Players do not all handle formats in exactly the same way. YouTube says its player adapts to the aspect ratio of both the video and the device. Its Android guidance specifically describes the vertical player changing size for portrait, square and widescreen videos. As a result, two apps can show the same file with different amounts of surrounding space or with different control options.

Are the bars part of the video or added by the player?
This distinction explains many apparently contradictory results. Player-generated bars are added temporarily to preserve the frame’s proportions. Embedded bars are pixels already stored in the file, so the player treats them as part of the picture.
A practical way to investigate is to use the controls available in the app:
- Watch the outer edge of the actual image, not just the black area. If the picture enlarges when you choose a fill or zoom option and the bars disappear, they were probably being added by the player.
- If zooming enlarges the whole composition but a black border remains around it, the border is likely encoded in the file. The player cannot distinguish those pixels from the intended image.
- Open the same file in another player, if you have one. Bars that change with the player window point to a display mismatch; bars that remain in the same relationship to the picture are more likely embedded.
These checks are indications, not a guarantee. Applications may use different crop rules, and their controls vary by device, app version and region.
Can you get rid of the bars while watching?
Sometimes, but every method makes a trade-off. The choice is between seeing the complete frame, using more of the display, and preserving the correct shape of objects.

Using zoom or fill
A zoom-to-fill mode enlarges the frame until it covers the available area. Because the frame and screen have different proportions, enlargement normally pushes some of the original edges outside the visible area. Faces, subtitles, logos and other details near an edge can be cut off.

Zoom cannot remove bars that are already encoded in the file without cropping into the padded composition. If the bars are part of the pixels, the player sees them as image content.

Samsung documents a gesture for YouTube on supported Galaxy devices: spread two fingers on the video to zoom in and fill more of the screen, then pinch to return to the original video size. Samsung also states that this gesture will not remove black bars embedded by the content creator.
This is not a universal phone gesture. Other Android models, iPhones, apps and app versions may use a full-screen button, a menu command, a different gesture or no crop-to-fill control at all. If you do not see the option, the app may simply be limiting the available modes.
Why keeping the bars can be the better choice
Fit mode preserves the director’s framing, subtitles and every edge of the image. It also keeps circles circular and people’s proportions natural. If the video contains information close to the borders, accepting bars is safer than filling the screen and losing part of the frame.

- Start playback and reveal the player controls by tapping the picture once.
- Look for a full-screen button, a crop or fill command, or a menu item describing zoom, aspect or original size.
- Choose the fill or zoom option when you prefer a larger picture and accept that the edges may be hidden.
- Return to fit, original or aspect mode when you need the complete frame.
- If the app supports a pinch gesture, use the gesture shown by that app. Do not assume a control documented for one phone family works on another.
If the bars remain after every available zoom setting, check whether they are baked into the file. No player setting can make embedded black pixels disappear without cropping the video itself.
What to do if you created the video
Creators can reduce unwanted padding by exporting the actual picture at the aspect ratio intended for the destination. YouTube advises creators not to add black bars or other padding directly to a video, because doing so can interfere with the player’s ability to adapt the presentation to different devices and formats.
For an existing clip, Microsoft Clipchamp describes using crop-to-fill or rotating a clip to fit a selected aspect ratio. The operation changes the visible area; it does not magically preserve every edge while also filling a differently shaped frame.
A safe editing workflow
- Choose the target frame shape before you crop. Base the choice on where the video will be viewed, such as a portrait or landscape player.
- Place the clip in that frame and select crop-to-fill, or rotate it if its orientation is wrong.
- Reposition the crop so faces, text, subtitles and other important details remain visible.
- Review the entire timeline, not just the opening shot. A crop that works for one scene can cut off a subject in another.
- Export a new version and check it on the intended phone orientation. If preserving every edge is more important than filling the frame, retain the bars instead of cropping.
Do not add permanent bars merely to make one preview look tidy. A player may add its own bars later, and the combination can create unused space on more screens.

A horizontal video has bars on the top and bottom
The video is wider than the available phone window, or the player is preserving a wide frame inside a taller area. This is ordinary letterboxing. Fit mode is showing the complete image.

A portrait video has bars on the left and right
The video is narrower or taller than the current player area. Pillarboxing keeps the portrait frame from being stretched sideways.
A square video has bars in a portrait or landscape player
A square frame cannot fill a rectangular window without either cropping or distortion. The player leaves space on whichever sides are necessary to keep the square intact.
The bars appear inside the picture even after zooming
The file may contain baked-in padding. Zoom can enlarge the entire padded frame, but the border remains part of what is being enlarged. Removing it requires cropping or editing the source.
The image fills the screen but people look distorted
The player or editor may be stretching the frame instead of fitting or cropping it. Return to the original-aspect setting, or use a crop-to-fill mode that removes edges rather than changing the shape of objects.
Bars differ between apps or orientations
That usually reflects different player windows and adaptation rules, not a changing video file. Apps can choose different fit, zoom and control behaviors, and a phone’s usable rectangle changes when it rotates.
Do black bars indicate a damaged phone or a bad video?
Not by themselves. Aspect-ratio bars are a normal presentation choice used to show every part of a frame without stretching it. They become a potential technical problem only when the video itself is unexpectedly padded, the player is applying an unwanted crop or stretch, or a creator exported the wrong frame for the intended destination.
Before troubleshooting the screen, compare the result with the player’s fit and zoom modes and, if possible, another player. A damaged display would not normally create clean, consistently positioned bars that follow the video’s framing; those patterns are characteristic of aspect-ratio handling.
The simplest decision
- Choose fit/original when seeing every pixel and preserving natural proportions matters most.
- Choose zoom/fill when a larger picture matters more than the outer edges.
- Avoid stretch unless distortion is acceptable.
- If you own the source, crop and export for the target frame, then verify that important details remain visible.
Black bars are therefore usually the visible cost of keeping a video’s original shape on a differently shaped screen. They disappear only when the player or an editor is allowed to crop, or when the source is produced for the display’s proportions in the first place.
