People can dislike kissing because its specific sensations—taste, scent, breath, moisture, pressure, or the style of contact—feel unpleasant. Cultural expectations, relationship context, and individual preference can matter too. No single cause explains everyone, and disliking kissing by itself does not prove a lack of affection, attraction, or relationship health.
Studies identify several plausible influences, but they do not provide a representative percentage of people who dislike kissing or rank one universal cause. The most accurate answer is personal: the reason depends on what a particular person experiences and values.
Kissing is a bundle of sensations, not one experience
A kiss combines several inputs at once. A person may enjoy one element and dislike another, so asking whether someone “likes kissing” can hide important differences. A cross-cultural study separated pleasantness of breath, body scent, and the taste of lips or skin from sensations such as wetness, physical contact, arousal, and similarity in technique. Those dimensions were measured as experiences associated with kissing, not as proof that any one sensation causes avoidance in a particular person. Watkins and colleagues, Scientific Reports (2019).

Consequently, “I hate kissing” may mean “I dislike saliva,” “I do not like this person’s technique,” “close facial contact overwhelms me,” or simply “kissing is not meaningful to me.” The wording alone cannot identify which explanation applies.

Why one unpleasant detail can dominate
Kissing happens at very close range, leaving little distance from breath, skin, and movement. If one component is consistently uncomfortable, it can overshadow otherwise neutral or pleasant elements. That is a description of how a person may experience the activity—not a claim that they have a disorder or that practice will necessarily remove the reaction.
Cultural norms make kissing common, but not universal
Mouth-to-mouth kissing is widespread in many societies, yet it is not a universal human practice. Watkins and colleagues examined kissing attitudes and behavior in 13 countries on six continents. In their sample, kissing was valued more in established relationships than during courtship. They also reported an association between relative income inequality and how often partners kissed across romantic relationships. These are aggregate patterns: they describe relationships among sampled populations and social conditions, not a rule for any individual. Read the 2019 cross-cultural study.
Norms influence what people learn to expect from romance. In one setting, kissing may be treated as an important sign of intimacy; in another, other forms of touch or verbal affection may carry more meaning. Someone who was not taught to regard kissing as necessary may feel no motivation to seek it, even without a sensory aversion.

What the older touch-avoidance study shows
A 1981 report by Tricia S. Jones and Martin S. Remland surveyed 248 participants from the United States, Mediterranean, Near East, and Far East using self-reported touch-avoidance measures that included kissing. It reported group differences, demonstrating that self-reported comfort with touch can vary among samples. The study’s age, limited participant groups, and broad cultural categories make it unsuitable for ranking entire cultures today or predicting any person’s preference. In other words, culture can shape the meaning and expected frequency of kissing, but cultural labels should not be used to explain an individual without asking that person directly.
Personal and relationship context can change the answer
Kissing preferences are also tied to circumstance. A person may dislike kissing with one partner, during one period, or in one setting while enjoying another form of intimacy. Factors can include whether the relationship feels safe, how much privacy is available, expectations about commitment, previous experiences, and whether the two people use compatible pace or pressure.

A 2018 study of 738 first-year university students in the United States found that 14.2% had never kissed a partner on the lips. Never having kissed was associated with being less likely to be in a romantic relationship, lower extraversion, and other personal or contextual characteristics. The outcome was lifetime kissing status—not dislike of kissing—so the figure cannot be used as a rate of aversion and cannot explain why any one student had not kissed. Preference is not the same as relationship quality
Some people express affection through conversation, companionship, sex, practical care, cuddling, or non-romantic touch rather than kissing. A difference in preferred affection becomes a relationship problem when partners cannot discuss it or when one person’s boundary is ignored—not simply because their preferences differ. A person can love a partner and still decline a particular act.
A cross-cultural study of affective interpersonal touch found that touch was most prevalent in relationships with partners and children in its sample and varied by context. It supports the broader point that touch is relational and culturally situated, but it did not directly measure why someone dislikes kissing. Disgust may be relevant, but it is not a complete explanation
Saliva and other close-contact cues can be interpreted through the lens of disgust, especially when a person is sensitive to pathogen-related signals. A review by Tybur and colleagues discusses saliva among possible disgust cues, but concludes that several proposed explanations for why people differ in disgust sensitivity are not supported by existing data. Tybur et al., “Why do people vary in disgust?” (2018).
Therefore, do not assume that someone who avoids kissing is afraid of germs. They may have said that explicitly, but the behavior alone does not establish it. Nor does a disgust response indicate a disorder. The safest description is that a particular sensory or emotional cue feels aversive to that person.

- Which part is unpleasant? Consider breath, taste, scent, saliva, wetness, pressure, tongue contact, or the feeling of faces being very close.
- Is the reaction general or situational? Notice whether it occurs with every partner, only with a particular person, only in public, or only when a relationship feels uncertain.
- What emotion accompanies it? Neutrality, boredom, anxiety, sensory overload, embarrassment, anger, or disgust point to different conversations, but none is a diagnosis by itself.
- What do you prefer instead? Naming alternatives—holding hands, hugging, cuddling, massage, sexual intimacy, words of affection, or time together—helps a partner understand that declining kissing is not necessarily declining closeness.
- Has the preference changed? A new aversion can be discussed in the context of recent experiences, stress, conflict, illness, medication, or changes in attraction, without assuming any one cause.
These questions organize self-reflection; they do not prove why the reaction exists. If the issue causes significant distress or conflict, a qualified counselor can help explore it while respecting the person’s boundaries.
How partners should handle a dislike of kissing
Ask, then accept the answer
Use a specific, non-pressuring question such as, “Is it the taste, wetness, closeness, or kissing itself that you do not enjoy?” A person may not know the answer, and “I do not want to” is still a complete boundary. Do not demand a medical explanation before respecting it.
Negotiate behavior, not consent
Partners can discuss whether any forms of kissing are welcome, such as a brief closed-mouth kiss, and whether others are not. They can also choose non-kissing ways to show affection. Negotiation is appropriate only when both people can freely say yes or no; persistence after a refusal is not compromise.
Avoid coaching or surprise tests
Suggestions about hygiene or technique may be useful only when the person asks for them. Trying to surprise someone with a kiss, repeatedly asking after a refusal, or treating discomfort as a challenge can damage trust. No study cited here shows that a person can or should be trained out of a kissing preference.

The studies address related but different constructs: kissing attitudes, touch avoidance, disgust variation, affective touch, and lifetime kissing status. Treating them as interchangeable would create a stronger conclusion than the evidence supports.
Bottom line: dislike can be real without being universal or pathological
Some people dislike kissing because a particular sensory combination feels bad; others do not attach cultural or personal meaning to it, or feel uncomfortable in a specific relationship or context. Kissing is widespread but not universal, and group-level findings cannot predict an individual. The respectful approach is to ask what the person wants, accept a clear boundary, and build intimacy around forms of contact that both partners genuinely enjoy.
