A “100-hour game” usually does not mean its required story takes 100 hours. The figure may describe a completionist run that adds side quests, exploration, collectibles, achievements, and other optional goals. To understand what you will actually play, identify the estimate’s category, source, date, and assumptions about what “finished” means.
What a “100-hour game” actually means
Completion time is not one fixed property of a game. It is an estimate tied to a goal. One player may stop after reaching the story ending; another may pursue every optional mission; a third may attempt every achievement, collectible, medal, or other tracked objective. Those are different playthroughs, so they can legitimately have very different durations.
The most useful distinction is between three scopes:

Xbox’s description of the HowLongToBeat feature uses this same basic separation: a main-story approach, a broader run that adds tasks, and completionist play aimed at conquering everything available. Therefore, a headline that says “100 hours to finish” is incomplete until it tells you which scope produced the number.

A dated example shows why the numbers diverge
A Steam Curator: How Long To Beat page displayed the following figures on December 8, 2025, for one game:

This single listing demonstrates the central point. The completionist figure is 97.5 hours longer than the main-story figure, while the main-plus-sides figure adds 34 hours to the story estimate. The 133-hour value is not evidence that the required narrative takes 133 hours. It describes a different objective. The page’s 65-hour “All Styles” figure is also its own estimate, not a promise that every player will take that long or a guaranteed mathematical average of the other three categories.
Because these are figures for one game captured on a specific date, they are an illustration, not a benchmark for the industry. They should not be presented as the average length of games generally.

Side quests add complete objectives outside the critical path
A main-story route follows only the objectives required to advance the narrative. Side quests sit outside that route. Each one can require its own travel, conversations, combat encounters, puzzles, rewards, or follow-up stages. When dozens of these missions are included, their combined time can exceed the story-focused route even though none is required to reach the ending.

The main-plus-sides category exists to capture this broader style. It is not simply “the story, played slowly”; it represents a different list of objectives.
Exploration replaces direct travel with additional play
Exploration is another source of time in a completion estimate. A player who travels directly between required objectives may finish quickly. A player who searches optional locations, investigates points of interest, or takes detours spends time that the main-story route does not require. Exploration can also be the way a player discovers side missions, collectibles, and other optional activities, so the categories overlap in practice.
Collectibles turn “visit once” into “search everywhere”
Collectibles create an exhaustive objective: finding one item is easy to overlook, while finding every item requires revisiting areas, checking alternate paths, and consulting the game’s tracking systems or outside notes. A completionist estimate includes that search even when the story never requires it.

Some goals ask for actions that a normal story run would never attempt. Xbox’s description of completionist intent specifically refers to pursuing every achievement and medal and conquering what the game offers. Such goals may require returning to earlier areas, choosing different outcomes, or deliberately meeting conditions that do not arise naturally. They expand the definition of completion beyond the narrative ending.

“Everything” is an open-ended target compared with an ending
Reaching a story ending is a clear stopping point. Completionist play has a much larger checklist: optional missions, locations, collectibles, achievements, medals, and other goals. The more entries on that checklist, the more ways a completion estimate can reach or exceed 100 hours without the required story becoming unusually long.
Completion-time numbers are estimates, not guarantees
A completion-time figure describes an expected play style, not a timer that governs every player. Even when two people choose the same category, they may not follow the same route or spend the same amount of time on optional tasks. The available evidence supports treating these figures as estimates associated with play style rather than promises about an individual result.
Difficulty, retries, exploration pace, and other player-specific influences can matter to an individual run, but the available material does not establish a representative ranking of those factors or a current industry-wide average. It is safer to use a published range or category as planning information than to convert it into a universal rule.
How to judge whether a 100-hour claim is credible
Before treating a large number as the time you personally need, check four properties of the claim:

- Scope: Determine whether the number covers Main Story, Main + Sides, Completionist, or All Styles. A completionist estimate cannot be substituted for a main-story estimate.
- Meaning of completion: Look for the actual stopping point. “Finished” may mean reaching the ending, completing broad optional content, or attempting every tracked goal.
- Evidence type: Identify whether the figure comes from a developer statement, player-reported database data, or a third-party estimate displayed on a page. These sources describe different kinds of evidence.
- Date and edition: Record when the number was published or captured and which version or edition it describes. A dated figure should remain dated when you repeat it.
If a listing provides only one undifferentiated number, you cannot tell how much of it belongs to the required story and how much belongs to optional completion. Treat that figure as incomplete information rather than assuming it is the main-story duration.

Choose your stopping rule first
Decide what outcome you want before starting:
- Story ending: Follow required objectives and stop when the narrative concludes.
- Broad experience: Add side quests and optional areas that interest you, without treating every item as mandatory.
- Exhaustive completion: Track achievements, medals, collectibles, side content, and every other goal you intend to clear.
This choice prevents a common planning error: reserving 100 hours for a completionist estimate when your actual goal is a story-focused run.
Use the closest matching estimate
For the dated example above, a story-focused plan would start from 35.5 hours, a broad story-and-sides plan from 69.5 hours, and an exhaustive plan from 133 hours. Those are starting estimates for the corresponding scopes, not guaranteed session schedules.
Track optional tasks separately
Keep a simple list divided into required objectives, side quests, exploration targets, collectibles, and achievement or medal conditions. If your available time changes, you can stop after the story, continue with selected side content, or resume the completionist checklist without confusing one goal with another.

Reassess when the estimate’s scope changes
If a guide, store page, or discussion quotes a different number, compare its category and date before treating it as a contradiction. A 35.5-hour main-story estimate and a 133-hour completionist estimate can both be accurate descriptions of the same game because they measure different goals.
Why a 500-hour headline does not mean a 500-hour story
In January 2022, Axios reported that Techland announced at least 500 hours for fully completing Dying Light 2. The figure drew a strong reaction because it referred to full completion, not necessarily to the main story. It is a useful historical example of how a completion claim can become a headline detached from its category.
That announcement is not a typical playtime statistic, and it does not establish that the game’s required narrative takes 500 hours. The same interpretive rule applies to a 100-hour claim: ask whether the number describes the story path or an exhaustive checklist.

What playtime research can—and cannot—tell you
A research paper surfaced in search that uses survival analysis to study game playtime, including settings where time or the available sample is limited. That kind of method can help analyze how play sessions or completion observations are distributed, but it does not produce a universal duration for every game or explain every individual player’s pace.
A dissertation also discusses HowLongToBeat’s “Main Story” category and completion-rate research. It is useful historical context for understanding how completion categories have been studied, but it should not be treated as current platform documentation.
Most importantly, the available evidence does not establish a representative current distribution of game lengths, a reliable typical duration by genre, or a ranked list of player-specific causes such as difficulty, retries, and exploration speed. Any article that supplies a single “average game length” without defining its sample, category, date, and source is making a broader claim than these figures support.
A quick decision framework for any “100 hours” estimate

The bottom line
Some games reach 100 hours because “finish” can include far more than the required story. Side quests, exploration, collectibles, achievements, medals, and other optional goals add objectives that a story-only player can skip. The reliable way to interpret the number is to identify its category, source, date, and definition of completion. A long completionist estimate may accurately describe an exhaustive run while saying little about how long the main story itself takes, and no single example should be mistaken for an industry-wide average.
