DJI adds forward-facing LiDAR to selected drones because it can help detect obstacles ahead in low light, including when the aircraft’s forward vision system cannot recognize an object. It works alongside cameras rather than replacing them—and it is not fitted to every modern DJI drone.
What does forward-facing LiDAR do on a DJI drone?
DJI says its consumer forward-facing LiDAR actively emits and receives laser light to identify obstacles ahead. The sensor adds an active distance-sensing layer to the aircraft’s obstacle-detection system. On the Air 3S, DJI describes vision as the main obstacle-avoidance system in daytime, with LiDAR joining when conditions meet the system’s criteria. After takeoff, when obstacle avoidance is active, DJI says LiDAR operates continuously and can recognize objects ahead in low light when vision fails to do so. DJI’s forward-facing LiDAR FAQ describes the system and its operating conditions.
This is a complementary approach: cameras help the aircraft perceive a scene, while LiDAR can provide another way to detect an obstacle in front. DJI explains that binocular vision uses paired cameras to perceive a 3D scene and estimate distances, but that vision sensing can decline in poor light or over smooth surfaces such as mirrors and tiles. LiDAR may help cover some of that forward-sensing gap; DJI does not claim it resolves every lighting, surface, or obstacle-detection problem. DJI’s FAQ names five consumer models with forward-facing LiDAR. Its broader sensing guide shows that many other DJI aircraft use vision, infrared, or a combination without this forward-facing LiDAR sensor.

These are manufacturer-published figures, not a promise that every obstacle will be detected at those distances. DJI’s FAQ says regular objects larger than 2.5 cm in diameter and with reflectivity above 40% can be identified at night, while noting that size, flight speed, and the environment affect performance. The published range and object-identification conditions are not interchangeable: check the target and conditions rather than assuming a single guaranteed detection distance. DJI’s FAQ provides the stated figures and qualifications.
How does LiDAR work with vision sensing?
Vision sensing relies on cameras and suitable visual conditions; DJI says paired binocular cameras can estimate distance from a 3D view, but sensing may weaken in poor light or over smooth surfaces. LiDAR actively emits and receives laser light, giving selected drones another forward-detection method when vision has difficulty. On the Air 3S, DJI says vision is the primary daytime obstacle-avoidance system and LiDAR supplements it when conditions call for it.

That division of labor does not mean LiDAR sees in every situation or covers all directions. The consumer LiDAR discussed here faces forward and has a stated 60° horizontal and 60° vertical field of view on the models for which DJI publishes figures. Obstacle avoidance still depends on the aircraft’s sensing configuration, flight mode, obstacle characteristics, and surroundings.
What are the limits and flight-mode restrictions?
- Sport mode: DJI says forward-facing LiDAR is automatically disabled for obstacle avoidance.
- Obstacle avoidance turned off: In Normal or Cine mode, switching obstacle avoidance off in the app also turns off both forward-facing LiDAR and vision sensing, according to DJI.
- Speed: DJI warns that flying too fast can still result in a crash after an obstacle is detected. Slow down, especially in poor light, and keep watching the flight path.
- Return to Home: DJI says obstacle avoidance may command an ascent of 10 m to bypass an identified obstacle during return-to-home. If the obstacle exceeds the height limit, the aircraft brakes to hover and the pilot must take control.
- Flight status: DJI describes these consumer units as solid-state LiDAR and says the sensor is inactive when the aircraft is not in flight.
These behaviors and specifications are DJI’s descriptions; they are not independent collision-rate or performance test results.

Is consumer DJI LiDAR the same as enterprise LiDAR?
No. The compact forward-facing sensor on selected consumer drones is intended to support obstacle detection. DJI’s enterprise Matrice 400 specifications separately describe a horizontal rotating LiDAR system with a stated standard measuring range of up to 100 m under specified lighting and reflectivity conditions. That enterprise equipment is a different system and should not be taken to mean that consumer Mini or Mavic drones produce survey-grade maps or point clouds. DJI’s Matrice 400 specifications describe the enterprise system.

If low-light forward obstacle sensing matters, confirm that the exact model has forward-facing LiDAR and check its stated conditions. Do not use “modern DJI drone” as a proxy for the feature: DJI’s model-by-model guide lists aircraft that use vision or infrared sensing instead. LiDAR is an additional aid, not a substitute for choosing a suitable mode, flying cautiously, and maintaining awareness of obstacles.
