Many classic home computers started at a BASIC prompt, so switching the machine on could lead directly to writing or running a program. That experience—not a rule that every good computer must work this way—is the idea behind the playful claim that “all the best computers boot to BASIC.” A modern example, Thoreau BASIC, brings a similar prompt to x64 Windows and UEFI systems.
What does it mean to boot straight into BASIC?
BASIC is a programming language, and on many 8-bit home computers the machine started in an interpreter rather than loading a graphical desktop first. The user could type a command or enter a program at the prompt. Jenny List’s August 27, 2026, Hackaday article uses that familiar startup experience as its premise; it does not claim every computer did this.
List describes the appeal as an invitation to experiment: “The machine invited you to program it, and no doubt many of our middle aged readers are here today because they ran with that.” That is her editorial observation, not a measured account of how people learned programming.
How does Thoreau BASIC recreate that experience?
Thoreau BASIC is a modern interpreter described by Hackaday as a bare-metal program for x86 machines with UEFI. A UEFI build can start directly on compatible firmware-based systems, presenting BASIC without first launching a conventional operating system. The project also provides a separate Windows build, which runs as software within Windows rather than replacing its startup environment.

The publisher’s Thoreau BASIC page describes it as a free 64-bit interpreter for x64 Windows and x64 UEFI. It retains line-numbered BASIC programming, while adding modern capabilities. Hackaday characterizes it as largely compatible with GW-BASIC; that description should not be taken as a guarantee that every GW-BASIC program will work unchanged.

The page describes the project as in development and labels the download “Name your own price.” These details can change; check the publisher page for the current version, files, and availability.

Choose the Windows package if you want to run the interpreter inside Windows. The UEFI package is the option intended to boot directly on an x64 system with UEFI, but the cited sources do not provide a compatibility list for specific computers. The two packages offer different startup experiences, and neither establishes that Thoreau BASIC is equivalent to original 8-bit hardware.
What the BASIC-at-startup idea gets right—and what it doesn’t
The nostalgic appeal is practical as well as aesthetic: a prompt makes programming the immediate purpose of the machine. Thoreau BASIC shows that the idea can be revisited on modern x64 hardware, with facilities beyond those associated with many early home computers.

But “all the best” is a playful judgment, not a technical category. Many computers have never booted to BASIC, and a UEFI interpreter is not the same thing as a vintage computer’s built-in environment. The useful distinction is whether you want to experiment at a BASIC prompt, run BASIC inside an existing operating system, or use original hardware; the sources establish Thoreau BASIC’s Windows and UEFI formats, but do not provide a broader compatibility comparison.
