Retro games usually look blurry because the console is sending a small, often analog image that a modern TV must convert to its much larger fixed pixel grid. The final picture is also affected by the cable, any adapter or scaler, aspect-ratio processing, and the television’s picture mode. The right fix depends on that complete signal path; no single setting makes every console sharp.

Start by identifying the console’s video output and cable, then check the TV’s game and aspect-ratio settings. Use the console’s own display modes where available, improve a poor analog connection when the hardware supports a better one, and consider a dedicated scaler only when the source and its connectors are compatible.

Why a modern TV makes an old game look soft

Older consoles were designed for televisions with far fewer visible pixels than a current flat panel. A console may output a 240p or 480i signal, or an analog signal whose edges are already softened by the connection. A modern television has to sample that incoming image, deinterlace it when necessary, scale it to the panel’s pixel grid, and display it inside a chosen aspect ratio.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Scaling is the unavoidable part. A low-resolution frame does not divide evenly into every modern panel, so the TV must choose how to distribute each source pixel across new pixels. Different processing methods can make edges look soft, uneven, or overly sharp. Analog connections add another variable: composite video combines picture information in a way that can blur color boundaries before the TV even begins scaling.

Aspect-ratio handling can make the result appear wrong even when it is not technically out of focus. Many older games were composed for a 4:3 screen. Stretching that image to fill a wide panel changes the shape of pixels and artwork. A television may also apply its own processing after a console or converter has already scaled the picture.

These factors explain why two people can connect the same game to different TVs and see different results. The console, its output mode, the cable, intermediate hardware, the TV input, and the TV’s selected picture mode all matter.

Map the entire signal path before changing anything

Do not begin by buying a cable or scaler. First write down every device between the console and the screen. A useful inventory has five entries:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Console: record the exact model, not merely the game system family. Revisions can use different video connectors.
  2. Console output: identify whether the system provides composite, S-Video, component, RGB, SCART, HDMI, or another signal.
  3. Cable: note the connector at both ends and whether it is a direct cable or an adapter.
  4. Intermediate hardware: include switchers, inexpensive converters, AV receivers, capture devices, and dedicated scalers.
  5. TV input and mode: record which input is selected and the current picture and aspect-ratio settings.

This inventory prevents a common mistake: purchasing hardware that cannot accept the console’s signal. For example, the manufacturer’s input list for the RetroTINK-5X Pro includes composite, S-Video, component, RGB, and SCART. That does not mean every console can use every one of those connections; the console must actually output the signal and the cable must be wired for that model.

Signal-path question Why it changes the picture What to record
What resolution or format leaves the console? The TV or scaler must recognize and process that format correctly. For example, 240p or 480i, when documented for the console.
Is the connection analog? Analog transmission can introduce softness before digital scaling. Composite, S-Video, component, RGB, or SCART.
Is there an adapter or scaler? Each device can deinterlace, scale, crop, or add processing. Every model between console and TV.
Which TV input and picture mode are active? Input-specific settings and game processing can change latency and processing. Input name, picture mode, and aspect setting.

Check the television’s settings first

Set the connected input to Game mode

Sony’s official TV help guide advises checking the Game picture mode when a game console is connected. On some Sony models, the TV switches to Game automatically; if it does not, select Game manually for the input carrying the console signal. Menu names and available modes vary by model, so use the TV’s own picture settings rather than assuming another brand’s labels will match.

Game mode is primarily a processing and responsiveness setting. It can remove or reduce some television processing, but it is not a guarantee that a low-resolution source will become crisp. If the picture changes when you switch modes, compare the same game and the same TV input at the same aspect ratio so you are judging one variable at a time.

Choose a presentation that preserves the intended shape

Look for the TV’s aspect or screen-format control and start with a 4:3 presentation for games designed around a traditional television frame. A full-screen wide setting can stretch circles, characters, and pixel art. Some TVs offer a direct or original-size option; the exact label depends on the model.

Keep the setting consistent while troubleshooting. Changing both aspect ratio and picture mode at once makes it difficult to tell whether softness came from scaling, stretching, or another processing step.

Use the console’s own display modes when they exist

NES Classic Edition

Nintendo’s support instructions for NES Classic Edition list three game display choices: 4 by 3, Pixel Perfect, and CRT Filter. Pixel Perfect presents square pixels. CRT Filter adds a scan-line-style presentation intended to resemble a CRT display. The 4 by 3 option keeps the traditional frame shape.

These choices apply to the games, not to the HOME menu. Therefore, a setting that changes the game image may not change how the system’s menus look. If the game appears correct but the HOME menu does not, that difference is expected under Nintendo’s documented behavior.

Other consoles and re-releases

Some later mini consoles and software collections provide their own pixel, aspect, or CRT-style options, while original hardware often does not. Read the exact model’s manual or settings screen. Do not assume that a menu option on a re-release exists on the original console, or that a CRT filter is a resolution improvement; it is a presentation choice.

Improve the source connection when the console supports it

If the console offers more than one analog output, use the highest-quality compatible connection before asking the TV to compensate. RetroTINK’s product guidance characterizes composite video as a low-quality choice and recommends a better connection such as S-Video, component, or RGB when the console and cable support it.

  • Composite: a single video connection that generally gives the softest result among the options listed by the manufacturer.
  • S-Video: separates parts of the video signal and can preserve cleaner edges than composite on compatible hardware.
  • Component: uses separate video channels and is available on some consoles and cables.
  • RGB or SCART: can provide a clean analog source when the console, cable, and receiving device all support the required wiring and format.

Connector names alone are not enough. A cable made for one regional or hardware revision may not carry the correct pins for another. Confirm the console’s documented output, the cable’s compatibility, and the TV or scaler’s input standard before ordering. A better cable cannot restore detail that the console never generated, but it can avoid adding unnecessary softness or interference.

When a dedicated scaler is worth considering

An external scaler is most useful with original consoles that output analog video and need a controlled conversion to a modern digital display. It sits between the console and TV, accepts a supported source format, and sends a digital signal at a resolution the TV can process consistently.

The RetroTINK-5X Pro is one example of this category. Its manufacturer lists composite, S-Video, component, RGB, and SCART inputs; support for 240p and 480i among its input formats; and scaling up to 1080p for modern displays. Those specifications make it relevant to many analog-output systems, but they do not make it universal. You still have to verify the console’s connector, the cable’s wiring, and the exact signal format.

RetroTINK-5X Pro detail Documented information Practical implication
Input types Composite, S-Video, component, RGB, and SCART Choose a cable and console output that match one supported input.
Input formats noted by the manufacturer Includes 240p and 480i Useful for common analog retro-console signals, subject to model compatibility.
Digital scaling Scaling up to 1080p The scaler can provide a TV-friendly digital output, but it cannot recreate source detail.
Price in the cited product listing $325 when accessed October 13, 2026 This is a time-sensitive listing price, not a permanent price or a complete ownership cost.

A scaler is therefore an optional hardware path, not a mandatory purchase. It is most defensible when the console is original, its analog output is known, the TV handles that signal poorly, and you want one device dedicated to conversion. A modern re-release that already outputs HDMI may not need an analog scaler at all.

A step-by-step troubleshooting procedure

  1. Return to a known game screen. Use an actual game rather than a menu, because some consoles apply display modes only to gameplay.
  2. Confirm the input. Select the TV input physically connected to the console or converter. If an intermediate device is present, verify both its input and output selection.
  3. Record the current image. Note whether the picture is merely soft, visibly stretched, flickering, showing combing on motion, or losing part of the frame. These symptoms point to different stages of the path.
  4. Set the TV’s Game mode. Apply the setting to the active input, following the TV manufacturer’s menu. If the TV changed modes automatically, confirm which mode it selected.
  5. Set a 4:3 or equivalent presentation. Keep the image’s intended shape while you evaluate sharpness.
  6. Check the console’s display menu. On NES Classic Edition, compare 4 by 3, Pixel Perfect, and CRT Filter while viewing the same scene. Remember that these modes affect games rather than the HOME menu.
  7. Test the cable path. If the console supports S-Video, component, RGB, or SCART as well as composite, use a verified compatible cable and compare the result without changing other settings.
  8. Test one device at a time. Temporarily remove an unnecessary switcher or converter if the connection allows it. This identifies whether an intermediate box is adding processing.
  9. Consider a scaler only after the source is understood. Match the console’s signal to the scaler’s documented inputs and formats. Do not buy based only on the connector’s physical shape.
  10. Compare at the preferred presentation. Decide whether you want square-pixel sharpness, a traditional 4:3 frame, or a CRT-like filtered look. The sharpest option is not automatically the most authentic-looking option.

Match common symptoms to likely causes

What you see Likely stage to inspect Next check
Everything is soft, including text Low-resolution scaling or a weak analog connection Confirm the source format, then compare a verified higher-quality connection where available.
Characters look unnaturally wide Aspect-ratio handling Choose a 4:3 or original-size presentation instead of a stretched wide mode.
The game changes but the HOME menu does not Console-specific display-mode scope On NES Classic Edition, remember that Nintendo documents the modes for games, not the HOME menu.
The picture changes when switching TV picture modes Television processing Compare Game mode with another mode on the same input and keep the one that gives the preferred balance of processing and appearance.
A new scaler shows no picture Unsupported input, cable wiring, or signal format Recheck the console model, cable, scaler input type, and documented format support.
The image is sharper but still lacks fine detail Source limitation Accept that scaling changes size and conversion quality; it cannot add information absent from the original signal.

Three setup examples

NES Classic Edition connected directly to a TV

Use the console’s display settings first. Compare 4 by 3 for the traditional frame, Pixel Perfect for square pixels, and CRT Filter for scan-line styling. Then check the TV input’s Game mode and aspect setting. Because the documented NES Classic modes apply to games, judge the result from gameplay rather than the HOME menu.

An original analog-output console using composite

Identify the exact console revision and confirm whether it also supports S-Video, component, RGB, or SCART. If a compatible higher-quality output exists, compare it with composite using the same TV input and aspect setting. If the TV still handles the signal poorly, a scaler designed for that input and format is the next hardware option.

A console or re-release that already outputs HDMI

Start with the HDMI connection and the TV’s Game and aspect settings. An analog scaler intended for composite, S-Video, component, RGB, or SCART is not automatically relevant to an HDMI-only path. Investigate the console’s own image options before adding conversion hardware.

How to choose among the available fixes

Option Best fit Trade-off
TV Game mode and correct aspect ratio Any setup where the TV is applying unsuitable processing or stretching. Settings cannot create detail that the source did not output.
Console display mode Mini consoles and software collections that provide pixel, 4:3, or CRT-style choices. Modes may affect only games, and a filter changes appearance rather than resolution.
Higher-quality compatible cable Original analog consoles with an available S-Video, component, RGB, or SCART output. Compatibility is model- and region-dependent; the cable still carries the console’s original detail limit.
Dedicated analog scaler Original analog hardware whose signal needs reliable conversion for a modern display. Additional cost and setup; supported inputs and formats must match exactly.

What no fix can do

A television setting, replacement cable, or scaler can change presentation, reduce avoidable signal degradation, or perform a more suitable conversion. None of those steps can recover texture, color information, or edge detail that was never present in the console’s output. A result that looks cleaner may still be visibly less detailed than a modern game.

Sharpness is also partly a preference. Pixel Perfect or a square-pixel mode emphasizes hard edges. A CRT filter intentionally adds scan-line styling and may look softer while feeling more authentic to someone who prefers that appearance. Decide which image you want before judging a setup as successful.

Bottom line

Find the console’s actual signal path, set the TV to an appropriate game and 4:3 presentation, use the console’s own display choices, and replace composite with a verified higher-quality connection when the hardware allows it. Add a scaler only when its inputs and format support match the original console. These steps can prevent unnecessary blur and distortion, but they cannot turn a low-resolution source into newly created high-resolution detail.
