People often respond to AI chatbots socially because conversation activates habits humans normally use with other people. Polite wording, turn-taking, personal tone and apparent emotion can invite trust, disclosure or social evaluation even when users know they are talking to software. Treating a chatbot socially does not necessarily mean believing it is human, conscious or alive.
The best evidence points to a context-dependent interaction between a system’s cues and a user’s motives. Some people anthropomorphize more when they strongly desire social connection. Studies of current chatbots have not shown that social use inevitably damages relationships, nor that it is harmless for everyone. What matters is the user, the type and duration of interaction, and whether the chatbot is used as a supplement to human contact or as its substitute.
What does it mean to treat a chatbot like a person?
Social responses are not the same as mistaken identity
When someone says “please” to a chatbot, thanks it, shares a worry or judges its personality, that is a social response. It shows that the person is applying familiar conversational rules to an interface. It does not establish that the person thinks the system is a human being. People can hold two ideas at once: “This is software” and “I should respond to it as if it were a conversational partner.”

Psychologists often use anthropomorphism for attributing humanlike qualities, intentions or feelings to a nonhuman system. The term covers a range of judgments, from casually describing a chatbot as friendly to treating its answers as evidence of a stable personality. It should not be stretched into a claim that users believe a model has consciousness.

Why ordinary conversation matters
Chat interfaces use the same basic structure as human dialogue: a message receives a contingent reply, the exchange has a turn order, and the wording can be tailored to what was just said. Those features give users a reason to deploy habits learned in family, school, work and friendships. Social language can therefore appear before a user has made any serious judgment about the machine’s mind.
CASA and the Media Equation: the main explanation
The Computers Are Social Actors (CASA) paradigm and the related Media Equation framework propose that people apply social rules to computers and media when those systems provide social cues. A person may be courteous, evaluate a computer’s “personality” or disclose information because the interaction resembles a social encounter, not because the person has concluded that the device is a person. A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis summarizes this tradition and notes that findings about anthropomorphic cues and rapport have been mixed: cues can matter, but their effects are not uniform across situations.
This helps explain why a chatbot can feel unusually personal. A search box usually returns a result; a conversational model appears to answer you. The difference is psychological as much as technical. Once an interface supports back-and-forth exchange, users can import expectations about politeness, responsiveness and social evaluation.
The frameworks describe a tendency, not a fixed law. The same user may be formal with a work assistant, playful with a creative tool and emotionally open during a difficult night. The system’s wording, the task, the setting and the user’s expectations all influence which interpretation is activated.
Which chatbot cues encourage humanlike reactions?
Contingent, personal language
Replies that directly address the user, acknowledge the previous message and maintain a conversational tone are easier to read as intentional than a static menu or database result. Personal pronouns and a response that appears to fit the moment can make the interaction feel reciprocal, even though the underlying system is generating text from patterns rather than experiencing the exchange.

Apparent emotion and social evaluation
Words that express enthusiasm, concern or sympathy provide familiar signals for interpreting another agent. Users may also evaluate a chatbot as helpful, rude, trustworthy or flattering. Such evaluations are social judgments about the interaction, not measurements of an inner emotional life.
What the classic experiments actually tested
Eun-Ju Lee’s 2010 experiments examined how flattery and interface humanlikeness affected responses to computers. In one experiment, humanlike cartoon characters changed participants’ evaluations. In another, participants found a flattering computer more socially attractive but were also more suspicious of its claims. Some negative effects disappeared when participants performed a secondary task, and participant rationality moderated some responses. The results support a general mechanism in which cues and attention shape reactions; they are not direct tests of today’s large language models. See the 2010 Communication Research experiments for the original design and limits.

Individual motives matter. In a 2025 randomized longitudinal study by Rose E. Guingrich and Michael S. A. Graziano, 183 participants were assigned either to text chat with a companion chatbot or to word games. They completed at least 10 minutes of the assigned activity daily for 21 consecutive days. Participants with a stronger desire for social connection anthropomorphized the chatbot more. Greater loneliness, by itself, was not the factor associated with more anthropomorphism in that study.
Participants who attributed more human qualities to the chatbot also reported greater effects of the interaction on their social life. That is an association in a three-week study, not proof that anthropomorphism causes social improvement or social harm. The study also does not establish how people in other age groups, cultures, platforms or usage patterns would respond. Its methods and results are available in the published AAAI/ACM study.
The distinction between loneliness and desire for connection is useful. Someone can want more social contact without describing themselves as lonely, while another person can feel lonely but prefer not to use a chatbot for companionship. Treating either trait as a universal explanation would overstate the evidence.

What current studies say about well-being
Findings from ChatGPT interaction data
In March 2025, OpenAI and MIT Media Lab reported an automated observational analysis of nearly 40 million ChatGPT interactions, paired with targeted surveys, plus a randomized controlled trial of nearly 1,000 participants using ChatGPT for four weeks. The report found that affective interactions were rare in the analyzed conversations overall. A small subgroup of heavy Advanced Voice Mode users showed more emotionally expressive use.
Recommended Free Tools
The controlled study found differences by modality, amount of use, conversation type and user circumstances. The authors explicitly caution against broad generalization: the work examined ChatGPT, English-language conversations and U.S. participants, excluded people under 18, and had not yet been peer-reviewed when published. The report’s own product description is also careful: “ChatGPT isn’t designed to replace or mimic human relationships, but people may choose to use it that way given its conversational style and expanding capabilities.” Read the methods and qualifications in Early methods for studying affective use and emotional well-being on ChatGPT.
Average outcomes versus individual experiences
The companion-chatbot study reported no significant average change in social health or relationships across its 21-day period. At the same time, participants who anthropomorphized more reported greater social impact. These results can coexist: a group average may show little overall change while a subset of users experiences a noticeable effect.
That pattern is why claims such as “chatbots replace human relationships” and “chatbot companionship is harmless” are both too broad. The available studies measure particular systems, samples and time windows. They do not establish long-term effects for every kind of user or every form of conversational AI.
Do people actually think a chatbot is a real person?
There is no named statistic in the cited evidence showing what percentage of all people believe chatbots are people. The studies measure social responses, anthropomorphic attribution, reported impact or interaction patterns rather than a universal belief in machine personhood.

In practice, users can shift between frames. A person may know that a model has no personal memories or feelings, yet still use a warm tone because it makes the task easier. Another user may temporarily imagine a character while role-playing, then return to a strictly instrumental view. Neither behavior alone proves a belief that the system is conscious.
Can talking to a chatbot affect human relationships?
It can affect how a person spends attention and interprets social interaction, but the direction and size of any effect depend on context. A short exchange for brainstorming is different from daily companion use. Text interaction is different from a voice conversation that includes expressive timing. A user seeking practice for a difficult conversation is doing something different from a user who avoids all human contact.
The strongest responsible conclusion is conditional: social use may feel meaningful to some users, and some users report stronger social effects, but current studies do not show an inevitable replacement of friends, family or professional care. Duration, frequency, the user’s goals and the presence or absence of human relationships should be considered together.

How to keep a useful perspective when using a chatbot socially
Name the role you want the system to play
Before a conversation, decide whether the chatbot is a tutor, brainstorming partner, writing coach, role-play character or companion. A defined role reduces the chance that a warm conversational style silently becomes a substitute for help you expected from a person.
Separate empathy-like wording from capability
A chatbot can produce a sympathetic sentence without feeling concern, remembering a relationship in the human sense or understanding your life as a person would. Treat warmth as a communication style, then verify important facts and decisions independently.

Watch for displacement
Review your pattern over time. Warning signs include repeatedly cancelling human contact to continue chatbot conversations, using the system as your only outlet for serious distress, or treating its confident response as more authoritative than qualified advice. These are practical signals for reassessing use, not clinical diagnoses.
Protect sensitive information
Social disclosure can feel natural because the interface responds immediately and without visible judgment. Apply the same caution you would use with any online service: avoid sharing information that could identify you, another person or an organization unless you understand the service’s data practices.
Use human support for high-stakes needs
For emergencies, medical or mental-health crises, legal decisions and threats to safety, contact an appropriate professional or emergency service. A conversational model can help organize questions, but it is not a replacement for accountable human care.
What remains unknown
Researchers still need longer follow-up periods, broader populations and comparisons across text, voice and other modalities. Studies should distinguish occasional social language from intensive companionship, measure changes in real-world relationships rather than only self-reports, and examine users under 18 separately. The current evidence is also concentrated in particular products and English-language settings.
Those limits do not make the findings useless. They identify the most defensible answer today: people treat chatbots like people because social cognition is readily activated by conversational cues, while personal motives and context determine how far that response goes. A social reaction is real; it is not proof that the machine is.
