Bond yields rise when bond prices fall or when investors demand a higher return to hold the bonds. Higher yields can put downward pressure on stock valuations by raising the rate used to discount future company earnings—but stocks do not automatically fall. The reason yields are rising, along with changing expectations for corporate profits and investment risk, can reinforce or outweigh that pressure.
What a rising bond yield means
A bond yield is the return implied by its market price and promised cash flows. For a bond with fixed cash flows, its price and yield move in opposite directions: when the price falls, the yield rises; when the price rises, the yield falls. The coupon rate is the interest payment set when the bond is issued, not its current yield.
For example, an existing bond’s fixed payments become less attractive if investors can buy comparable bonds offering higher returns. Its market price may then fall until its yield is competitive. The Federal Reserve explains that Treasury yields are implied by market prices (Federal Reserve: Nominal Yield Curve).

The Treasury constructs its constant-maturity series from points on a par yield curve, so a quoted 10-year rate is a benchmark estimate, not necessarily the yield available on a specific security (U.S. Treasury: Interest Rates FAQ).

Why bond yields rise
A nominal long-term yield reflects several forces. A useful framework is the expected average path of future short-term interest rates plus a term premium. Expected nominal rates, in turn, reflect expected real rates and expected inflation. These components are not separately observable market quotes: estimates of them depend on models and assumptions. A higher nominal yield alone does not prove that investors have raised their inflation expectations.
In a 2019 speech, then-Federal Reserve Vice Chair Richard H. Clarida described a nominal 10-year yield as “the sum of two components: investors’ expectation over the next 10 years of the average level of short-term interest rates plus a term premium” (Federal Reserve: Clarida speech, November 12, 2019). In one Federal Reserve three-factor model, the term premium is the yield minus the expected average short rate over the bond’s life and includes a convexity premium; other model conventions may differ (Federal Reserve: Three-Factor Nominal Term Structure Model).

Markets expect higher short-term rates
If investors revise upward the expected path of central-bank policy rates, yields at affected maturities can rise. Shorter-maturity yields are often more closely tied to expectations for near-term policy, while longer yields reflect a longer horizon as well as term compensation. A change in expectations can move yields before a central bank changes its policy rate.
Expected real rates or inflation compensation rise
Yields can rise if investors expect stronger real returns, or if they require more nominal compensation for expected inflation or uncertainty about inflation. A nominal Treasury yield combines these influences; it does not identify which one changed. Real Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) yields can help distinguish real-rate movements from nominal-rate movements, but inflation compensation inferred from market rates is not a perfect forecast of future inflation.

The term premium increases
Investors may demand more compensation for holding a longer-duration bond through uncertainty about future interest rates and inflation. A rise in this term premium can lift long-term yields even without an equivalent change in expected short-term rates. Because the premium is estimated rather than directly quoted, its measured contribution depends on the model used.
Supply, demand, and appetite for safety shift
Bond prices respond to the balance of buyers and sellers and to the return investors require. A change in demand or risk appetite can therefore affect yields. For instance, stronger safe-haven demand can support Treasury prices and push their yields down; weaker demand can work in the opposite direction. Do not attribute a particular day’s yield move to one cause without evidence specific to that move.

How higher yields can affect stock prices
A stock’s price reflects investors’ estimates of future company cash flows, adjusted for when those cash flows arrive and how risky they are. One way to frame the discount rate applied to a risky asset is a safe-asset interest rate plus a risk premium. If the relevant safe rate rises while expected cash flows and the risk premium remain unchanged, the discount rate rises and the present value of those cash flows falls. That is the basic channel through which higher bond yields can weigh on stock valuations.

The reverse logic applies to price declines: a higher safe rate is one possible pressure, not a complete explanation.

Why stocks do not move one-for-one with yields
The “all else equal” assumption often fails. If yields rise because investors expect stronger economic growth, expected company earnings may rise too. That earnings outlook can offset some or all of the valuation pressure from higher discount rates. A change in the equity risk premium—the extra return investors demand for taking stock-market risk—can also move stock prices independently of Treasury yields.
For this reason, two markets moving in opposite directions does not by itself establish that one caused the other. To interpret a yield move, consider what changed in expectations for growth, inflation, company earnings, and risk appetite at the same time.
A dated example of competing forces
The Federal Reserve’s July 2026 Monetary Policy Report said that, from the start of 2026 to its July observation, nominal two-year Treasury yields had risen about 60 basis points and 10-year yields around 35 basis points. Over the same reporting window, it said the S&P 500 had risen about 9 percent amid fluctuations, attributing the stock gain largely to robust corporate earnings and enthusiasm about artificial intelligence. These figures describe that report’s period, not current market levels, and do not show that rising yields caused stocks to rise (Federal Reserve: Monetary Policy Report, July 2026).
How to read a yield headline
Before drawing a conclusion from a reported rate change, identify what yield is being discussed and what else was happening in markets. Different measures answer different questions.
- Maturity: A short-term yield and a 10-year yield reflect different horizons. Longer maturities include expectations over a longer period and term compensation.
- Nominal or real: Nominal yields include inflation compensation. A real TIPS yield is more relevant when asking about inflation-adjusted returns; neither measure alone explains every change.
- Treasury or corporate: Corporate yields include a credit spread—the additional compensation associated with lending to a company rather than the U.S. Treasury. A corporate borrowing rate can change differently from a Treasury yield.
- Yield or coupon: A bond’s coupon is set by its terms; its current yield changes with its market price.
- Observation date and method: The Treasury’s official curve uses indicative bid-side quotes for recently auctioned securities, collected around 3:30 p.m. each trading day and fitted to a par curve. It is a benchmark series, not an executed price for every individual bond (U.S. Treasury: Yield Curve Methodology, revised February 18, 2025).
- Other news: Check whether earnings, growth, inflation, or perceived investment risk also changed. A yield move alone cannot explain a stock move.
What a yield curve can—and cannot—tell you
A yield curve plots interest rates across maturities. When shorter-maturity rates exceed longer-maturity rates at the maturities being compared, the curve is described as inverted. That shape can reflect market beliefs about future rates, current conditions, and monetary policy; it is not proof that a recession or a rate cut will occur. The Treasury cautions that its curve rates show past and current conditions and cannot accurately forecast future economic and monetary policies on their own (U.S. Treasury: Interest Rates FAQ).
