If your AirPods sound muffled or tinny on a Windows PC—especially after you join a call—Windows may be using the Bluetooth hands-free audio path instead of the stereo playback endpoint. Check the selected output first. If the quality changes when the AirPods microphone becomes active, the hands-free path is a likely troubleshooting cause, though it is not a universal AirPods or Windows problem.
Start by checking the AirPods playback device
Windows can expose separate playback and recording endpoints for Bluetooth earbuds. If it selected a hands-free endpoint for playback, music may sound worse than it does through the stereo endpoint. The AirPods-specific steps below come from a BGR article syndicated by Yahoo Tech on September 22, 2026; exact labels and menus can vary by Windows version and driver.
- Open Settings > System > Sound and check the selected output device. Choose the AirPods stereo playback option if it appears.
- If you do not see it there, open More sound settings. In the playback tab, select AirPods Stereo and choose Set Default.
- Play audio again and check whether the sound improves. Microsoft also recommends confirming that the intended Bluetooth device is selected under Sound output. See Microsoft’s Bluetooth audio troubleshooting guidance.
Does the sound get worse when you use the AirPods microphone?
Try comparing playback with the microphone inactive. If music quality drops as soon as a call or voice-chat app uses the AirPods mic, Windows may be switching to a hands-free Bluetooth path. On some classic Bluetooth configurations, that path can reduce playback quality while handling microphone audio.
If choosing the stereo playback endpoint does not solve the problem, the BGR article describes disabling AirPods Hands-Free AG Audio in the recording devices list. This can prevent Windows from using the AirPods as a microphone, so it is a trade-off rather than a universal fix: use the PC’s built-in microphone, an external microphone, or a wired headset for calls if available.

Can Windows keep stereo sound while the microphone is active?
Some newer Windows 11 systems and compatible Bluetooth audio devices support stereo playback while the microphone is in use. Microsoft says that support requires Windows 11 version 24H2 or newer, appropriate factory-integrated Bluetooth LE support, manufacturer drivers, and LE Audio-capable earbuds. If the PC and headset support the feature, Windows defaults to stereo mode while the mic is active. Systems without the required support may switch to mono audio when the microphone is used. The setting called Format when microphone is active appears only on systems that support the stereo-while-microphone feature. Its absence does not by itself indicate a fault. Support depends on the PC’s Bluetooth hardware and drivers as well as the audio device; Windows version alone is not enough.

Choose whether to keep the AirPods microphone enabled

If the stereo endpoint is missing or the sound is still poor
Windows menus and endpoint names differ by device, driver, and version. If you cannot find the labels above, or changing the output does not help, work through Microsoft’s general Bluetooth troubleshooting suggestions:
- Confirm the correct Bluetooth device is selected as the sound output.
- Check which output formats are available in Sound settings.
- Remove and pair the Bluetooth device again, or toggle Bluetooth off and on.
- Check for an updated Bluetooth driver from the PC manufacturer.
These are general checks, not guaranteed fixes. The hands-free path is one plausible cause when quality changes as the mic activates; output selection, audio format, pairing, drivers, and device compatibility can also affect Bluetooth sound.
