Dinosaurs living at broadly similar times in southern Africa did not share one uniform landscape. The fossil record points to a patchwork of river corridors, floodplains and drier environments, separated by distance and changing through the Triassic–Jurassic transition. Zimbabwe’s Late Triassic rocks near Lake Kariba preserve evidence of more persistent freshwater than the drier settings described for similarly aged parts of South Africa and Lesotho. Those environmental differences could support different animal communities, but climate alone has not been demonstrated as the sole cause.
The apparent contrast also reflects when and where fossils were deposited, evolutionary turnover, and how completely each region has been sampled. Two closely related sauropodomorphs occur in the same Zimbabwean rocks, while work on the Elliot Formation in South Africa and Lesotho has revealed previously unrecognized diversity among Early Jurassic sauropodomorphs. The comparisons are therefore about local ecosystems and an incomplete record, not a simple map of one southern African dinosaur fauna versus another.
“The same period” covers several different situations
Geological labels such as Late Triassic and Early Jurassic cover millions of years. Even a fossil bed assigned to the same broad interval as another bed may be older or younger, formed in a different basin, and preserve a different kind of habitat. A useful comparison must keep age, rock position, environment and sampling confidence together.

These are not competing claims that one region had “the” dinosaurs of southern Africa. They are observations from separate depositional systems whose ages overlap only broadly. Local conditions could determine which animals lived nearby, while extinction, dispersal and evolutionary change altered communities through time.

What the Lake Kariba fossils reveal
A water-rich river system
The Late Triassic rocks around Lake Kariba preserve associated aquatic fossils. Lungfish and phytosaurs—large crocodile-like reptiles, not true crocodiles—are used by the Natural History Museum as indicators of more permanent bodies of water than those inferred for similarly aged areas in South Africa and Lesotho. This is environmental context, not a measurement of annual rainfall and not proof that water availability directly selected a particular dinosaur species.
A river system can create a chain of habitats: active channels, vegetated banks, seasonally flooded flats and better-drained ground farther away. Animals that used those microhabitats would experience different food, shelter and competition even within the same basin. The rocks record where sediment and carcasses accumulated, so they cannot by themselves show the full range of habitats that existed beyond the fossil site.
Two named sauropodomorphs in the same rocks
Musango matusadonaensis and Musankwa sanyatiensis lived in this Zimbabwean ecosystem at approximately 210 million years ago. A family-tree analysis places them as each other’s closest relatives and within Unaysauridae, a group known from Africa, India and South America when those landmasses were parts of Gondwana.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Musango is estimated at about 4.5 metres long and 222 kilograms. The specimen is a partial skeleton without a skull, so its exact diet cannot be identified from teeth or jaw shape. Professor Paul Barrett said it was likely a herbivore or omnivore based on its relatives, while stressing that certainty is impossible without the head. Musankwa’s presence in the same rocks demonstrates that at least two closely related sauropodomorphs shared the local ecosystem; it does not establish how abundant either species was.

Possible separation by feeding height
The museum account suggests that different adult browsing heights or diets could have allowed Musango and Musankwa to coexist. That is a plausible ecological interpretation, not a behavior observed directly in the fossil record. Body proportions, teeth and preserved plants can sometimes test such a hypothesis, but the incomplete Zimbabwean material leaves the precise division of resources unresolved.
The broader point is stronger than any single feeding model: close relatives can occur together. Their coexistence means that “one place, one dominant dinosaur” is not a safe assumption for Late Triassic southern Africa.
What the Elliot Formation adds
A record across a major transition
The Elliot Formation of South Africa and Lesotho spans deposits around the Triassic–Jurassic transition. Its lower, Late Triassic portion is poorly understood, while the upper beds are Early Jurassic. That distinction matters when comparing an upper-Elliot sauropodomorph with a Late Triassic animal from Zimbabwe: they may be close in geological age, but they are not automatically contemporaries.
Older summaries divided the formation into a simple lower “Euskelosaurus” range zone and an upper “Massospondylus” range zone. A 2017 study revised this picture using new fossil discoveries, taxonomic revision, lithostratigraphy and improved knowledge of where specimens came from in the sequence. Better classification and dating can make a fauna appear more diverse without any new species having evolved; some apparent changes reflect correction of earlier identifications.

More diversity in the upper beds
The 2017 Elliot Formation study found greater taxonomic and morphological diversity among Early Jurassic sauropodomorphs in the upper beds than previously recognized. “Taxonomic” diversity refers to the number of distinct named or diagnosable forms; “morphological” diversity refers to differences in body shape and anatomy. Together, the findings indicate that the Early Jurassic community was not adequately represented by a single generalized sauropodomorph type.
That result should not be converted into a precise percentage or a complete census. The available record does not provide an attributable count that would justify saying one region was a specific number of times more diverse than another. It shows that earlier, simpler zonation understated variation and that additional discoveries or revisions may change the total again.
Lesothosaurus is a separate-age example
Lesothosaurus diagnosticus illustrates the Early Jurassic record of present-day South Africa and Lesotho, but it is not a direct same-time counterpart to the Late Triassic Zimbabwean pair. Growth lines in its bones suggest that it reached adult size in roughly two to four years. A bonebed has also been interpreted as evidence of social aggregation; Professor Barrett noted that direct evidence of Lesothosaurus living in groups had previously been lacking.

This example is useful for understanding the Elliot Formation’s animals and behavior, provided its age is kept explicit. Moving it into the Late Triassic Zimbabwe comparison would erase the chronological difference that paleontologists are trying to resolve.

Why nearby regions can have different dinosaur faunas
1. Habitats were patchy, not uniform
Southern Africa was part of Gondwana, but it was not one continuous ecological zone. Rivers, floodplains, lake margins and drier uplands could occur close together. A dinosaur fossilized beside a permanent channel represents a different local setting from one buried on a seasonally dry floodplain. The associated lungfish and phytosaurs in Zimbabwe provide evidence for that environmental contrast, while the South Africa–Lesotho areas are described as drier in the regional comparison.
2. Geographic separation limited interchange
Basins and uplands can restrict movement even when animals are capable of walking long distances. Populations separated for many generations may diverge, while a river corridor can connect some habitats and isolate others. The presence of Unaysauridae on several Gondwanan landmasses shows broad distribution of the group, but it does not prove that every species could freely move between all southern African basins.
3. Communities changed through time
The Triassic–Jurassic transition was an interval of major evolutionary and extinction-related change. A fauna in Late Triassic Zimbabwe and a fauna in Early Jurassic upper-Elliot beds need not match even if the rocks are described as part of the same broad southern African sequence. New lineages may appear, existing ones may disappear, and body forms may diversify after environmental or biotic disruption.
4. Different body forms can share a habitat
Musango and Musankwa demonstrate that related sauropodomorphs could occur together. Differences in size, posture, feeding height or diet may have reduced competition, but the available specimens do not reveal the exact mechanism. Coexistence is therefore evidence against a single-species community model, not proof of a particular niche-partitioning scheme.

5. The fossil record is uneven
Fossils are biased toward environments that bury remains and toward bones that survive transport and decay. A partial skeleton may be easier to identify at family level than at species level. The lower Elliot Formation contains relatively homogeneous diagnostic features, and incomplete key specimens limit comparisons. Zimbabwe has received less study than some South African and Lesotho sites, so future fieldwork could add species or alter current boundaries.

Stratigraphy fixes the order of events
Researchers first determine where a specimen sits in the rock sequence. Lithostratigraphy describes the rock units; biostratigraphy uses fossils to correlate intervals; improved stratigraphic provenance records the precise level from which a specimen came. Without that information, fossils from different ages can be mixed into one artificial fauna.
Anatomy and phylogenetics test relationships
Detailed anatomical comparisons identify diagnostic features and distinguish a genuinely different species from a variation within one species. Phylogenetic analysis then tests relationships among forms. The conclusion that Musango and Musankwa are close relatives comes from such a family-tree analysis, not simply from their being found near one another.
Associated fossils reconstruct the setting
Fish, reptiles, plants, sediment grains and the shape of channels provide environmental clues. Lungfish and phytosaurs support the interpretation of persistent freshwater in the Lake Kariba deposits. They do not specify a precise climate, rainfall total or vegetation map, and they cannot by themselves explain why one dinosaur lineage rather than another was present.
Taphonomy sets the limits
Taphonomy examines what happened between death and burial. Water transport can concentrate bones from different places; scavenging can remove skulls; rapid burial can preserve a local event rather than an average community. A bonebed may indicate aggregation, but it does not automatically prove year-round herding. These checks are why claims about feeding behavior or social life remain qualified.
What can—and cannot—be concluded
- Supported: broadly contemporaneous southern African deposits represent different local ecosystems.
- Supported: Zimbabwe’s Late Triassic Lake Kariba record has freshwater indicators associated with more persistent water than the drier settings described for South Africa and Lesotho.
- Supported: Musango and Musankwa are two closely related sauropodomorphs from the same Zimbabwean rocks.
- Supported: upper-Elliot Early Jurassic sauropodomorphs show more taxonomic and morphological diversity than older summaries recognized.
- Not established: a precise regional diversity percentage, a single rainfall regime, or a climate-only cause for species differences.
- Not established: the exact diets, browsing heights or social structure of the Zimbabwean dinosaurs from the currently known material.
“Until recently, it was assumed that the dinosaurs living across southern Africa were largely the same. However, these discoveries are showing that this part of the ancient supercontinent Gondwana was actually made of a series of smaller ecosystems – each with a different cast of characters.”

A concise timeline of the evidence
- Late Triassic, about 210 million years ago: Musango and Musankwa lived in the Lake Kariba region of Zimbabwe, where associated fossils indicate persistent freshwater environments.
- Triassic–Jurassic transition: The Elliot Formation records changing conditions and faunas in present-day South Africa and Lesotho; its lower part remains poorly understood.
- Early Jurassic upper Elliot Formation: Revised taxonomy, discoveries and stratigraphic work reveal greater sauropodomorph diversity than the older two-zone model suggested.
- Early Jurassic Lesothosaurus evidence: Growth lines indicate adult size in about two to four years, and a bonebed supports social aggregation, but this species is not a same-age comparison with the Zimbabwean pair.
- Current interpretation: Southern Africa’s dinosaur record is best understood as multiple local ecosystems changing through time, with conclusions constrained by incomplete and uneven sampling.
