SSD caching helps most when a NAS repeatedly reads or writes a small set of randomly accessed data. It is not a general speed boost: large sequential transfers, such as copying or streaming large files, may see little benefit. If your NAS feels no faster, first identify the slow task, then check whether the cache is serving that workload and whether it has had time to warm up.

Why didn’t SSD cache make my NAS faster?

A cache can accelerate eligible requests only when it contains data the NAS needs. Synology describes SSD cache as most useful when input-output operations frequently access data stored in scattered locations. Synology’s explanation of SSD cache focuses on this access pattern, not on making every NAS operation faster.

Large, sequential work is a poor fit. Synology’s workload guidance distinguishes repeated random access from tasks such as streaming or transferring large files. It gives databases, virtual machines, mail workloads, and file services with concurrent small-file access as examples that may benefit; these are examples, not a guarantee for every NAS or configuration. Synology’s SSD selection guidance explains the workload distinction.

How to diagnose the slowdown

1. Identify the task that is slow

Be specific: is the problem a large file copy, video streaming, opening many small files, a database, or a virtual machine? A single sustained transfer is different from repeated random requests to the same frequently used data. A cache is a more plausible help for the latter.

2. Check the cache hit rate and warm-up

Use the NAS vendor’s own definition and monitoring screen. Synology defines read-only cache hit rate as accelerated random reads divided by total random reads. A newly created cache can initially miss because frequently used blocks have not accumulated in it yet; Synology calls this a warm-up period. Synology’s SSD cache documentation describes the hit-rate measure and warm-up.

A low hit rate means the cache is serving a smaller share of eligible requests. It does not, by itself, identify the cause: the workload may not revisit data, the frequently accessed set may exceed the cache, or the cache may still be warming. One reading is not enough to prove which explanation applies. Vendor guidance does not establish a universal target hit rate or a general percentage speed improvement.

3. Review the cache’s scope and settings

Check which volume or LUN is assigned to the cache, the cache mode, and any capacity or block-size controls exposed by your NAS. Settings and terminology differ by vendor and software version, so do not apply another product’s labels blindly.

For example, QNAP’s QTS 4.5.x documentation describes Random I/O and All I/O modes for different workload patterns: Random I/O is associated with uses such as virtualization and databases, while All I/O includes video streaming and large-file access. These mode names and guidance are specific to that QTS version, not universal NAS settings. QNAP QTS 4.5.x cache-mode documentation provides the version-specific details.

QNAP also identifies cache capacity and block size as possible considerations when hit rate is low. That is a reason to review those settings against the workload—not proof that increasing capacity or changing block size will fix a particular NAS. QNAP’s low-hit-rate guidance discusses these factors.

4. Confirm SSD compatibility before buying or replacing a drive

Check the compatibility list for your exact NAS model and the intended cache type before selecting an SSD. Synology recommends compatible SSDs and warns that an unlisted drive may affect system stability and cause data loss. The available guidance does not establish one SSD model as a universal choice. Synology’s compatibility list is model-specific.

What information is needed to identify the cause?

There is not enough information to diagnose an unidentified NAS from the fact that caching made no noticeable difference. A useful diagnosis needs the NAS make and model, software version, HDD/SSD layout, cache mode (read-only or read-write), target volume or LUN, the task being measured, time since cache creation, hit rate, and a measurement of the actual bottleneck. Without those details, changing a setting or buying a different SSD would be guesswork.
