Many older fire trucks had open crew areas because they inherited the side-mounted, outward-facing seating of horse-drawn fire engines. The layout let firefighters dismount quickly, but left them exposed to weather and road hazards. Enclosed bodies came in gradually as designers sought more crew protection without sacrificing fast access; open and closed designs coexisted, so there was no single worldwide changeover date.
Why did old fire trucks have no roofs?
“Roofless” usually describes the crew area or an open body, not necessarily every part of the vehicle. Early manual fire engines carried firefighters along the sides, with equipment stored below. The Museum of Fire describes this as the Braidwood style, an arrangement that shaped fire-engine layouts for more than a century. When engines became motorized, many kept exposed crew positions even as vehicles gained greater range and motor-driven pumps. Museum of Fire: Illustrating Change
The London Fire Brigade traces the outward-facing seating on its Dennis Big 4 to horse-drawn fire engines dating back to 1820. That date marks a seating tradition, not the first roofless fire engine. London Fire Brigade: Dennis “Big 4”

Fast dismounting
With no cab doors or enclosed seating to negotiate, firefighters could get off the vehicle without an obstacle in their way. That mattered when crews needed to move quickly on arrival. Inherited seating and practical access help explain the design; the evidence does not support reducing it to a single motive such as visibility or tradition alone. Museum of Fire: Illustrating Change

A layout familiar to fire services
Motorization changed how fire engines traveled and operated, but did not immediately replace established body arrangements. The side-seating layout persisted even as the vehicles themselves evolved.
What were the drawbacks of riding without a roof?
Open-riding firefighters faced rain, cold, and other weather, as well as hazards from collisions. The Museum of Fire notes that the risks became more concerning as motor engines carried crews farther from their stations. An open body therefore traded protection in transit for access; it was not a design without costs. Museum of Fire: Illustrating Change

When did fire trucks start getting enclosed cabs?
Enclosure developed over time rather than arriving everywhere at once. The Science Museum Group dates an enclosed body built for Edinburgh Fire Brigade to 1930. It says enclosed bodies had become the usual design for new appliances within 20 years. That describes a broad shift in new designs, not proof that every department or vehicle had an enclosed cab by 1950. Science Museum Group: Scale model of Leyland fire engine, 1936
Designers also explored ways to improve protection while preserving quick access. In late-1940s NSW experiments, Scout Car designs had less storage and side-window reflections that could distract crews. A later “New World” arrangement put an enclosed cabin at the front and inward-facing seating at the rear, aiming to increase protection while still allowing a quick exit. Why did open and closed fire trucks coexist?
Adoption varied by vehicle, department, and period. Heritage NSW lists both an open-cab and a closed-cab 1942 Morris Magirus turntable ladder, showing that the two forms could exist at the same time. A date for an enclosed design becoming usual cannot be treated as a universal fleet conversion deadline. Heritage NSW: Fire and Rescue NSW Heritage Fleet
The design change was a balance: preserve quick access while giving crews more protection on the road. The specific vehicle and local adoption matter more than any one worldwide milestone.
