If your Sim just died, the cause is usually tied to something that happened immediately beforehand—such as a fire, swimming, or repairing electronics—or to a death type added by a pack you own. Check the last event and your installed packs before assuming the game bugged out. If the Sim has become a ghost, you can keep them playable or try an in-game resurrection method, though each method has its own requirements.
How to narrow down what killed your Sim
Start with the moments before death. A death notification or Grim’s arrival confirms what happened, but the preceding activity is often the best clue to the cause. EA’s guide to Sims 4 deaths groups death types by game pack and covers both base-game and pack-specific causes.
- Fire: Consider whether a cooking or other fire-related incident occurred.
- Drowning: Check whether the Sim was swimming or otherwise in water.
- Electrocution: Look for an electrical repair or similar incident.
- Sudden mood or activity-related death: Embarrassment and overexertion are among the base-game causes EA lists.
- Other base-game causes: Hunger and old age are also possible.
- Pack-specific event: Weather exposure, poisoning, and encounters with dangerous animals or objects are among the additional possibilities covered in EA’s guide.
Use the event and the packs installed in your game together. Age or mood by itself does not establish why a particular Sim died, and not every cause is available in every player’s game.
Check which packs are installed
Some death types and ghost features depend on specific packs. EA says the death types available in Create a Sim depend on the packs you own; its Ghost Guide also describes pack-dependent ghost content. Don’t look for a pack-specific cause or ability unless your game includes the relevant content.

Decide whether to keep the Sim as a ghost or bring them back
After a death, EA says you can keep the Sim as a playable ghost in the household or let them become a free-roaming ghost associated with the lot where their urn or tombstone is located. If you choose the free-roaming route, EA says you can add the ghost to the household from the urn or tombstone. See EA’s ghost guide for details on ghost status and pack-specific features.
If your goal is resurrection, first check whether the Sim is still dying or is already a ghost. The methods below are not interchangeable: some intervene before death finishes, while others bring an existing ghost back.

- Develop Parenting Skills – Level up your Sim’s parenting skills to satisfy their child’s needs and influence their behaviors. Gain new abilities through experience and choosing when to discipline bad actions, encourage good behavior, or just let kids be kids.
- Shape Your Sim’s Childhood – The decisions you make influence how your Sim parents and leave a lasting impact on their child’s future. Each choice shapes their personality, affects their traits, influences their family relationships, and guides their path into adulthood.
- Gather your Sim’s family to participate in new activities and spend quality time with each other. Sims of all ages can work together to complete a variety of school projects, express their creativity using construction blocks, or volunteer their time for good.
- Customize your Sims’ looks and their home with new family fashion and build items. Give the kids’ bedrooms extra personality, remodel the kitchen to feel homier, and let your Sims express their sporty or artistic sides with new outfits.
Resurrection options and their requirements
| Method | When it applies | Requirements or caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Save a Life with Grim | Before death completes | Requires a Life & Death ghost with the Helpful Ghost power. EA says it can save a Sim dying from a cause other than old age and describes this interaction as having a 100% success rate. |
| Ambrosia | For a ghost Sim | Requires high Cooking and Gourmet Cooking skills plus ingredients. EA says Ambrosia can bring Ghost Sims back to life. |
| Dedeathify | For a ghost Sim | Requires the Realm of Magic pack and an appropriately trained Spellcaster. |
| Wishing Well | For a ghost Sim | EA lists it as a resurrection route, but warns that it can backfire. |
| Book of Life | For a ghost Sim | Requires the Book of Life to have been prepared beforehand. |
These options come from EA’s death guide. Match the method to your Sim’s current state, the packs you own, and what your household has already prepared. The success statement for Save a Life applies only to the specified Life & Death interaction and eligibility conditions; it is not a guarantee for other methods.

A Death Flower has two distinct uses. EA says a Sim can bargain with Grim using one to save another Sim, and the flower is also an ingredient in Ambrosia for restoring a ghost. Those are separate routes: the Grim bargain is a chance to intervene during the death event, while Ambrosia is for a ghost. See EA’s Death Flower guide for how the item is used.

When death may not explain the problem
If the Sim appears stuck or unresponsive rather than having completed a normal death event, that is a different problem from identifying a death cause. EA maintains separate troubleshooting guidance for stuck and unresponsive Sims, but the steps are not detailed here; consult EA’s help pages rather than trying an unverified reset procedure.

EA’s October 22, 2024 update says Sims react to other Sims’ deaths according to their traits and relationships and describes new needs for Ghost Sims. Those changes can affect reactions or ghost behavior, but they do not identify the cause of an individual death. EA describes Thanatology as a five-level skill in the Life & Death Expansion Pack; it concerns the afterlife and interactions with ghosts, not a general cause of death.
