Laptop makers phased out netbooks because their low-cost, compact design came with limits that mattered more as tablets and thin-and-light laptops improved. Netbooks worked for basic web tasks, but their performance and ergonomics made them poor substitutes for full laptops, while low prices also made the category less attractive to manufacturers. The shift happened over several years, not in one sudden industry-wide decision.
What were netbooks designed to do?
Netbooks were compact, inexpensive computers aimed at basic internet tasks such as browsing, email, music and video. In a June 2009 release, Intel described its Atom-based netbooks as “compact mobile devices designed for basic Internet-related tasks.” Intel also presented them as possible extra computers or first computers for people getting online. The company said tens of millions of Intel-based netbooks had sold by June 2009; that was Intel’s claim about its own platform, not a total-market sales figure. Intel’s June 2009 release
That narrow purpose explains both the appeal and the weakness of the format. A netbook could make web access more portable and affordable, but it was not built to deliver the performance, screen space or typing comfort expected from a full-size laptop.
Why did netbooks lose their place?
Performance and ergonomics limited their usefulness
Small screens and compact keyboards made netbooks less comfortable for extended work, and their hardware could struggle with demanding applications. Intel IT evaluated netbooks for enterprise use in a May 2009 brief and concluded they could not replace users’ laptops or desktops for a full set of IT applications. Intel’s report said, “Laptops were much faster than netbooks for processor- or graphics-intensive applications,” citing Intel internal measurements from March 2009. That is a dated company finding, not a current benchmark or a result that applies identically to every device or workload. Intel IT’s 2009 evaluation

Tablets competed for portable internet use
Tablets offered another way to browse and use online services on the move, and contemporary coverage described consumer interest shifting toward them. That competition was one pressure on netbooks, not proof that tablets alone caused the category’s decline. The Guardian’s December 2012 report discussed the competition alongside the category’s other difficulties.
Thin-and-light laptops offered a more capable alternative
Manufacturers also had a route to portable computing that did not require the same compromises: thinner, lighter laptops with broader capabilities. Intel began promoting its Ultrabook category in 2011, with a product roadmap extending through 2013. In a 2012 factsheet, Intel said its industry work had helped move the market toward thin-and-light devices across price points. That is Intel’s account of its own strategy and influence, rather than an independent measurement of the market shift. Intel’s 2012 Ultrabook factsheet

Low prices left manufacturers with weak margins
Netbooks’ affordability helped attract buyers, but contemporary reporting also cited low margins as a business problem. The Guardian described the economics as one difficulty facing the category; it did not provide a measured margin figure. For manufacturers, a product that sells at a low price and cannot easily expand into more capable uses may be harder to sustain than alternatives with a clearer upgrade path.

No single cause explains the phase-out. Tablets competed for casual portable use, but netbooks were also constrained by performance and ergonomics, while thin-and-light laptops offered a more versatile option. Low margins added a commercial reason to shift attention elsewhere. The best explanation is the combination: once buyers had other portable choices, the compromises that defined netbooks became less compelling.

When did manufacturers stop making netbooks?
The exit was gradual. In December 2012, The Guardian reported that Acer and ASUS were the only two major companies still making netbooks and that both planned to stop in 2013. MacRumors reported in January 2013 that the companies were winding down production. These reports describe the major manufacturers’ exit; they do not establish that every manufacturer ended production at the same moment. MacRumors’ January 2013 report
