Guardian Soulmates closed in June 2020 because its operators said the dating market had changed and the investment needed to keep the service competitive was no longer viable. They pointed to the growth of dating apps and other ways to meet people, many of them free and quick, and said adapting would require major technology and operating changes.

When did Guardian Soulmates close?

Guardian Soulmates launched online in July 2004. The Guardian announced on May 14, 2020 that the service would close in June, then reported on July 1, 2020 that it had shut down. Its operators described it as having run for more than 15 years. The Guardian’s July 2020 report covered the closure.

Why did the service shut down?

The Guardian Soulmates team gave two connected reasons in its closure message: the online dating landscape had changed since the service began, and the investment needed to respond was not viable. When Soulmates launched in 2004, the team said, online dating was different. By 2020, there were many dating apps and other ways to meet people, often free and quick.

The team said keeping Soulmates competitive would require substantial investment in new technology and a new way of operating. It summarized the decision this way: “To keep up with the changing times we’d need to invest heavily in new technology and develop a new way of operating, and it’s just not viable.” The Guardian published the closure message in its report on the shutdown.

That is the operators’ stated business rationale. Their announcement did not provide financial accounts, subscriber trends, quantified losses, or an independently audited explanation of the decision, so a particular financial problem or decline in membership cannot be established from it.

What was Guardian Soulmates, and why did members value it?

Soulmates was a premium dating service associated with The Guardian, aimed at single readers seeking like-minded people. For some members, the connection to Guardian readership suggested shared values. That was an individual member’s perception, not a verified description of every person on the service.

In a retrospective, The Guardian collected stories from couples who met through Soulmates and later built relationships and families. Those accounts show that the service led to meaningful matches for some people; they are individual stories, not an audited measure of its overall success rate. The closure message also said Soulmates had helped introduce “thousands” of people, but did not give a verified total.

Was Guardian Soulmates replaced?

The closure announcement did not name a successor or endorse another dating service. The historical reporting establishes why Soulmates closed, but it does not assess which services are active now or which might suit former members.
