If Edge opens a different page than you expect, first check which setting changed: the page shown when Edge starts, the destination of the Home button, or the content of each new tab. They are separate controls. An update may have happened around the same time, but Microsoft’s guidance does not say routine Edge updates reset startup preferences.
Which page changed?
“Start page” can mean three different things in Edge. Identify the one you want to fix before changing settings:

Microsoft puts startup and Home-button options under Settings > Start, home, and new tabs, while new-tab appearance and content are adjusted with Page settings on a new tab. Microsoft’s guide to changing Edge’s home page covers the Home button; its new-tab page guide explains Page settings.

- In Edge, select the three-dot menu, then choose Settings.
- Open Start, home, and new tabs.
- Under the startup options, select the behavior you want: open a new tab, continue where you left off, or open a specified page or pages.
- If you chose specified pages, add or edit the URLs in the list and close Settings. Restart Edge to check what opens.
Microsoft documents these as distinct startup behaviors. The available choice to restore the previous session while also opening specified URLs is supported starting with Edge 125 on Windows and macOS. Microsoft Learn’s RestoreOnStartup policy documentation describes the managed-browser startup choices.

Set the Home button separately
- Go to Settings > Start, home, and new tabs.
- Turn on Show home button.
- Choose the New tab page or enter the URL you want the button to open.
This changes the Home button destination, not necessarily the page Edge opens when it starts. Microsoft’s instructions apply to Edge on Windows 10 and Windows 11. See Microsoft’s Home-button instructions.
Change what appears on a new tab
Open a new tab and select the Page settings gear to adjust its layout, background, and content. This controls the new-tab experience; it does not, by itself, choose what opens when Edge starts.

Why it may have changed after an update
Microsoft says Edge updates automatically when you restart the browser by default. Its update guidance describes how updates are delivered, but does not identify routine updates as a cause of startup preferences resetting. The timing may be real, but it does not establish the cause of a particular change.

If the setting continues to change after you choose it, check whether Edge is managed by your workplace or school. An administrator can apply policies for the Home-button URL and startup pages. Microsoft documents that an enabled HomepageLocation policy can prevent users from changing the Home-button URL; startup behavior is controlled separately by RestoreOnStartup. If the setting is missing, disabled, or keeps reverting
- On a work or school device: A policy may control the setting. Contact your IT administrator rather than trying to override the policy.
- If Edge settings look different or options are unavailable: Check whether your browser is managed. Microsoft notes that organization controls can make some settings unavailable and advises users to contact their administrator. Microsoft’s update-settings guidance explains this management limitation.
- If the device is not managed: Recheck the startup and Home-button choices above. If Edge is still behaving unexpectedly, Microsoft’s troubleshooting steps include checking for updates and repairing Edge from Windows Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Microsoft says repair should not affect browser data or settings. Follow Microsoft’s Edge troubleshooting guidance.
Microsoft does not publish a frequency estimate for startup settings being reset by updates, and the available guidance cannot establish the cause on an individual device. The specific Edge version, operating system, profile, extensions, sync state, and management status can matter when diagnosing a persistent change.
