A dedicated server can be unavailable because of a provider or hardware fault, an operating-system or network problem, exhausted resources, impaired storage, a failed application, or an unexpected shutdown or reboot. Start by identifying which layer is unhealthy: a server that passes its infrastructure checks can still have a broken application, and a failed machine check does not automatically mean the workload itself is at fault.
The checks and recovery options below use Amazon EC2 and Google Compute Engine as documented examples. Other dedicated-server providers may expose different signals, controls, and recovery procedures.
Which layer is causing the downtime?
Separate the symptoms before taking action. Confirm which hostname, service, port, or application endpoint is failing, when the problem began, and whether the failure affects one workload or the whole machine. A failed website response alone does not establish that the server is down.
Amazon EC2 illustrates why this distinction matters: its status checks cover system, instance, and attached-EBS health, while application checks are optional. The first three are managed by EC2; application checks must be configured. AWS says its status checks run every minute and can supply metrics for CloudWatch alarms. See EC2 status checks.

| Signal | What it can indicate | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| System or host check | Underlying host, power, or network infrastructure trouble. | That the application is healthy once the host recovers. |
| Instance check | An issue within the virtual machine, such as startup, network, kernel, filesystem, or memory trouble. | That a provider-side fault is the cause. |
| Attached storage check | Problems with EBS reachability or I/O on EC2. | That replacing a volume is necessary or safe. |
| Application or endpoint probe | A failed HTTP/HTTPS response, stopped process, application error, or unreachable port. | That the machine or provider infrastructure is down. |
Six common causes of dedicated-server downtime
These are useful diagnostic categories, not a measured ranking or a claim that all hosts report failures in the same way. Several can occur together: a host fault, for example, may also disrupt networking or storage.
1. Provider infrastructure or physical-host fault
A provider-side problem can involve host hardware or software, power, or network connectivity. On EC2, a system status-check failure points toward the underlying system rather than an ordinary guest operating-system fault. The provider may resolve the issue, or an available recovery mechanism may move the instance. Check the host’s status information and provider notices before changing guest configuration.
2. Operating-system, network, or startup configuration failure
A machine can fail to start or become unreachable because of incorrect network or startup settings, an incompatible kernel, or a corrupted filesystem. AWS lists these among possible causes of failed EC2 instance checks. Review the instance’s status-check details and system logs; avoid treating every failed connection as evidence of a provider outage. See AWS guidance for EC2 Linux instances with failed status checks.

3. Memory or other resource exhaustion
Exhausted memory can contribute to an instance-level failure, while CPU, memory, network, or disk pressure can make a VM slow or unresponsive without taking the host offline. Google Cloud recommends reviewing those performance metrics when diagnosing compute-instance problems. A trend around the outage is more informative than a single current reading. See Google Cloud performance troubleshooting.
4. Attached-storage impairment
Storage may be unreachable or unable to handle I/O even when other parts of the machine appear healthy. EC2 exposes an attached-EBS status check for reachability and I/O. Check the storage signal and relevant disk metrics before changing volumes. Replacing or detaching storage without confirming the fault can complicate recovery or put data at risk.
5. Application process or endpoint failure
The operating system may be running while a web server, database, or other application process has stopped, become unresponsive, returned an error, or stopped listening on its expected port. Where the platform supports application checks, configure an HTTP or HTTPS probe for the relevant path and expected healthy response codes. Allow for planned deployments or restarts so a deliberate interruption is not misclassified as an incident.

6. Unexpected shutdown or reboot
A VM may have shut down or restarted because of a system event or administrative activity. Google Cloud advises querying instance logs to diagnose spontaneous shutdowns and reboots; inspect the event method and principalEmail to help determine what occurred and who or what initiated it. Its shutdown and reboot troubleshooting guide describes this log-based investigation.

Eight response steps, ordered by evidence
1. Establish the impact and time window
Record the affected hostname or endpoint, service and port, first observed failure time, and whether other services on the same machine still respond. Compare an external request with a check from inside the server when possible. This establishes the symptom without assuming its cause.
2. Inspect provider status checks and scheduled events
On EC2, distinguish system, instance, and attached-EBS checks; look separately for an application probe if one is configured. Review provider events and status details for the same time window. Other hosts may use different names or omit some of these checks, so use their documented equivalents.

3. Test the application separately from the machine
Check the service process, listening port, and application endpoint independently of the host-level signal. If an HTTP/HTTPS health check is available, set a meaningful path and healthy response codes. Account for scheduled maintenance, deployment, and restart windows when interpreting failed probes.
4. Review logs around the first failure
For a failed Linux instance, AWS recommends reviewing status-check information and system logs. On Compute Engine, query logs for the shutdown or reboot event and examine its method and principal identity. Correlate timestamps with deployment and administrative activity; a log entry can explain the lifecycle event without, by itself, proving why the application later failed.
5. Check resource and storage health
Review CPU, memory, network, and disk performance around the incident rather than relying on a snapshot taken after recovery. On EC2, include attached-volume reachability and I/O signals where available. Preserve data and avoid replacing or detaching storage until the evidence supports that action and the consequences are understood.

6. Repair the layer indicated by the evidence
If logs or checks point to startup, networking, kernel compatibility, filesystem, resource pressure, or an application process, address that specific fault. The right commands and safe recovery path depend on the operating system, provider, and storage configuration; provider documentation should govern platform-specific changes. Verify that the service responds after the repair rather than treating a successful boot as full recovery.
7. Reboot or invoke recovery only when appropriate
An instance-level failure may require customer action such as a reboot or configuration change. A system-level failure concerns the underlying host and may instead call for waiting or using a provider recovery option. AWS automatic instance recovery can cause an unplanned reboot: volatile memory is lost and OS uptime resets. Before stop, start, or replacement actions, consider the instance’s data and storage behavior, especially instance-store data. AWS documents the behavior and consequences in its automatic instance recovery guide. Recovery choices are not universally ranked; weigh the failed health layer, likely responsibility, data-loss and restart risk, whether the existing instance is preserved, and how application recovery will be verified.
8. Monitor health and verify the workload after recovery
Set alarms for relevant health-check failures and use dashboards to track resource performance and lifecycle events. After any recovery, confirm that the application and its dependencies have restarted and that the expected endpoint responds. A recovered VM does not, on its own, establish that the workload is healthy.

How to tell whether the host or your application is at fault
- Evidence leans toward the provider or host: a system-level check fails, provider events align with the outage, or host recovery is indicated. Escalate through the provider’s documented support or recovery path rather than making speculative guest changes.
- Evidence leans toward the instance: the host check passes but the instance check fails, with logs pointing to startup, networking, kernel, filesystem, or memory problems. Investigate the guest operating system and its configuration.
- Evidence leans toward storage: an attached-volume check or disk I/O signal is unhealthy while other signals differ. Preserve data and investigate the storage path before attempting replacement.
- Evidence leans toward the application: machine and storage checks pass, but the process, port, or endpoint probe fails. Troubleshoot the application and dependencies.
- Evidence points to a lifecycle action: logs show a shutdown or reboot event. Determine whether a system event or an administrative identity initiated it before attributing the incident.
These signals narrow the investigation; none alone guarantees end-to-end availability. Provider documentation supports health checks, alarms, probes, and lifecycle monitoring, but an uptime metric is not itself a service-level agreement.
