A normal DayZ restart is not automatically a world wipe. The server reloads its saved world, but an individual car or tent can still appear to “despawn” because it was ruined, its cleanup lifetime expired, persistence rolled back or was deleted, a vehicle moved during the restart, or the vehicle event configuration stopped replenishing it. The correct fix depends on which of those happened.
Use this order: search for movement, check the object’s damage state and lifetime, inspect vehicle events, then verify the storage_1 persistence data. Stop the server and make a backup before changing XML files or persistence files. Do not assume that increasing a value in types.xml repairs a missing vehicle; vehicles are controlled by the event system.
What “despawned” can mean in DayZ
Players use “despawn” for several different outcomes. Treating every outcome as the same problem leads to the wrong fix and can make data loss worse.

Four questions narrow the cause quickly: Is one object missing or are all objects affected? Did it happen immediately at restart or after hours or days? Was the object intact or ruined? Which configuration layer controls it—persistence storage, item lifetime, or vehicle events?

How DayZ persistence works across restarts
Persistence saves world objects such as placed tents and vehicle positions so they can be loaded again after a restart. It is tied to the object’s home server. A tent or car placed on one server does not become available on another server merely because the same character joins there; an item can be carried by a character, but the world object itself remains associated with its home server.
A restart therefore performs two operations: it reloads serialized world state and applies normal cleanup and economy rules. Reloading does not make an object indestructible. A ruined object can be removed, an object whose lifetime has expired can be cleaned up, and a failed save can cause the server to return to an older state. A host or database disconnect can also produce a rollback that looks like a mass despawn.

Always stop the server cleanly, copy the relevant files, make one targeted change, restart, and observe the next restart cycle before changing anything else.
Step 1: Search for a moved vehicle before editing files
DayZ Wiki warns that vehicles can move or slide during a restart depending on their location. This is especially plausible on slopes, uneven ground, near buildings, beside walls, or anywhere a vehicle can roll when physics resumes.
- Return to the exact parking location and inspect behind structures, fences, rocks and vegetation.
- Follow the downhill direction and any open road or field where the vehicle could have rolled.
- Check nearby spawn points and common parking areas; a vehicle can end up farther away than expected without being deleted.
- Ask another administrator or player to search at the same time if the map is large.
- Only classify the vehicle as deleted after a systematic search and a check of persistence and event state.
Do not immediately delete and respawn a vehicle while searching. A moved vehicle that is later found can create a duplicate and complicate the economy.

Step 2: Check damage and cleanup lifetime
Ruined objects are not protected by persistence
Persistence records an object; it does not override cleanup rules. DayZ can remove ruined cars, tents and other materials. If the object reached the ruined state before the restart, enabling persistence or raising a lifetime afterward will not restore it.

The lifetime value in types.xml controls how long an item class can remain under the economy and cleanup rules. This is a different check from whether the world successfully saved the object. A persistence failure can remove an object immediately, while a lifetime expiry normally appears after prolonged inactivity.
For persistent tents, current DayZ Wiki reference pages accessed in 2026 list car, large, medium and canopy tents at 45 days. Interacting with a persistent object resets its cleanup timer. That figure applies to the listed tent classes; it is not a universal value for every modded tent or vehicle. A ruined tent, a wiped world or a failed persistence save remains an exception.
Check the exact class, not a similar-looking item
Open the server’s types.xml and locate the exact class name used by the missing object. Modded vehicles and containers may use their own class definitions and lifetimes. Do not copy a vanilla tent value to a modded class unless the mod documentation says the classes share that setting. Container contents can inherit the container’s lifetime, so changing an item inside a tent may not prevent the tent itself from being cleaned up.
Step 3: Understand why vehicles use event files
Vehicles are spawned and maintained through DayZ’s event system rather than solely through types.xml. The two files to inspect are:

events.xml— activates dynamic events and defines their minimum, maximum and related limits.cfgeventspawns.xml— supplies the coordinates used by fixed vehicle events.
A vehicle can fail to reappear when its event is disabled, its limits do not allow another vehicle, or its event has no matching and valid coordinates. A types.xml lifetime edit alone does not repair any of those conditions.
Wrecks can block new spawns
Damaged or wrecked vehicles may continue to occupy a vehicle-event slot. The result is a server that appears to have no usable cars even though the event technically exists. Review the documented remove_damaged="1" cleanup setting where it is appropriate for your server. Treat this as a deliberate economy decision: aggressive damaged-vehicle removal can free slots, but it can also remove vehicles players intended to repair.
Match event names and spawn coordinates
Compare the vehicle event entry in events.xml with the corresponding entries in cfgeventspawns.xml. Check spelling, class names, event activation, coordinate validity and the number of allowed vehicles. A typo or an event with no usable spawn positions can stop new vehicles without affecting tents or unrelated loot.
Because event behavior depends on the server version, map and installed mods, record those details whenever you troubleshoot. A configuration copied from another map or an older server build may reference positions or classes that do not exist in your installation.
Step 4: Protect and inspect storage_1
The storage_1 directory contains serialized world state, including placed objects and vehicle positions. Deleting persistence files removes placed objects and can make a normal restart look like a wipe. Never use deletion as a first troubleshooting step.

- Stop the DayZ server and confirm that its process has exited.
- Copy the complete
storage_1directory to a dated backup location. Keep at least one backup from before the incident and one from before any repair. - Check whether a host migration, database disconnect, restore operation or scheduled maintenance replaced the directory with an older copy.
- Look for evidence of an intentional wipe or a corrupted save. Compare file timestamps and sizes with your normal restart pattern.
- Restore a known-good backup only when you have confirmed that the current state is a rollback or corruption case and understand what player progress will be lost.
If every tent, vehicle and placed object disappeared at once, persistence loss is more likely than individual lifetime expiry. If only one car is missing, do not restore the entire world before checking movement and damage.

Fixing tent persistence without creating a wipe
When a tent disappears after inactivity
Identify the exact tent class, verify its lifetime, and confirm that players interacted with it within the expected period. The 45-day figure for car, large, medium and canopy tents is a current vanilla reference, not a promise for modded tents. If the class is modded, use the class definition supplied with that mod.
When a tent disappears immediately after restart
Check whether it was ruined, whether the server restored an older storage_1 state, and whether the restart was interrupted by a host or database failure. A lifetime edit is unlikely to explain an immediate, single-restart disappearance unless the timer had already expired.
When tent contents vanish but the tent remains
Inspect the lifetime of the contents and the container class separately. Contents can inherit a container lifetime, so the item and the tent may not have identical cleanup behavior. Back up the files before changing either value.

One car is missing
Search for movement first, then check condition and persistence. If the vehicle was intact, the event configuration may be irrelevant because an existing vehicle can simply be somewhere else. If it was ruined, cleanup may be expected.

Many cars disappear after an XML edit
Recheck the vehicle event in events.xml, its coordinates in cfgeventspawns.xml, and the event’s minimum and maximum limits. Validate the file syntax and class names for your server version and map. Restore the last known-good configuration if the change disabled the event, then reapply one small change at a time.
Wrecks prevent replacement cars
Count damaged vehicles and inspect whether they are occupying event slots. Consider the documented remove_damaged="1" behavior only after deciding how quickly your server should remove repairable wrecks. Test the result through one complete restart and spawn cycle rather than changing several cleanup settings together.

A safe repair procedure for private servers
- Record the server version, map, mod list, restart time and whether the server is official or privately hosted.
- Classify the incident: one object or many, immediate or delayed, intact or ruined.
- Search nearby terrain for moved vehicles.
- Stop the server and back up
storage_1plus all configuration files. - Inspect the exact class lifetime in
types.xmlwhen the symptom is inactivity-related. - Inspect
events.xmlandcfgeventspawns.xmlwhen the symptom concerns vehicle availability or respawning. - Check global economy and cleanup settings only after class and event checks do not explain the symptom.

This procedure avoids the most damaging response—deleting persistence files to force a fresh spawn. A wipe can remove every placed object and still leave the underlying event misconfiguration unresolved.
Common mistakes and their safer alternatives
- Changing only
types.xmlfor a missing vehicle: inspect the event files because vehicles use the event system. - Assuming restart equals wipe: distinguish normal reload, cleanup, rollback and intentional deletion.
- Restoring a backup before searching: look for a moved vehicle first; a restore can discard legitimate player progress.
- Deleting
storage_1as a “fix”: preserve it and make a backup before any maintenance. - Using a universal lifetime for mods: verify the mod’s class definition and server version.
- Changing several files at once: make one offline change and test one restart cycle.
- Ignoring wrecks: damaged vehicles may consume event slots and block replacements.
- Copying coordinates from another map: validate every spawn coordinate for the installed map.
Preventive maintenance checklist
- Schedule clean restarts and confirm that the host completes its save before shutdown.
- Keep dated backups of
storage_1,types.xml,events.xml,cfgeventspawns.xmland relevant global settings. - Record the server version, map and mod versions alongside each backup.
- Inspect vehicle wreck accumulation before it fills event slots.
- Tell players that interacting with persistent tents resets their cleanup timer.
- After every configuration change, verify a vehicle spawn and a placed tent through a complete restart.
- Do not treat a 45-day vanilla tent reference as a guarantee for custom classes.
Bottom line: identify the layer before changing it
A DayZ restart normally reloads persistence; it does not automatically delete vehicles and tents. A missing object is usually explained by movement, ruin cleanup, an expired lifetime, a persistence rollback or deletion, or a broken vehicle event. Search for a moved car, check damage and timers, inspect vehicle events for cars, and protect storage_1 before editing. Because vehicles use events.xml and cfgeventspawns.xml while item lifetimes live in types.xml, the smallest correct change is safer than a broad wipe or a random lifetime increase.
