Metacritic listed a 77 Metascore, categorized as “Generally Favorable,” based on 115 critic reviews when accessed on October 9, 2026. That is an aggregate, not a single consensus shared by every reviewer. The same snapshot showed positive, mixed, and negative reviews, reflecting a range of individual judgments. Metacritic also listed an 8.8 user score from 13,492 ratings in that snapshot. User ratings and critic reviews come from different groups and use different measures, so the higher user score is not a direct correction or rebuttal of the critic aggregate. Metacritic lists platform-specific pages and scores as well; the 77 cited here is the general critic aggregate, not a score for every platform edition.
Did Pearl Abyss blame the review period for the score?
In an interview reported by The Game Business, Pearl Abyss European CEO Lybee Park said critics played a build that was not exactly the launch version and had limited time. She suggested that reviewers who concentrated on the main story might not have discovered optional details spread throughout the game world. That is Park’s explanation and perspective, not independent proof of why critics assigned their scores. The available account does not establish that all reviewers had identical conditions, show that review conditions caused particular assessments, or demonstrate that critics would have rated the game differently with more time. Sales figures cannot settle those questions either.
Why the distinction matters
Park’s point concerns how a reviewer might encounter the game: following the central story versus spending time exploring optional discoveries. It is a proposed explanation for a possible mismatch between the game’s appeal to some players and reviewers’ experience—not evidence that any particular review overlooked content or that the aggregate score is invalid.

What the U.S. ranking says—and does not say
The June announcement also said Circana data ranked the game No. 2 in 2026 year-to-date U.S. video-game sales. That is a U.S. sales ranking cited by Pearl Abyss; it is not the source or geographic scope of the worldwide six-million total. Pearl Abyss’s June 11 sales announcement

A Metascore summarizes critic reviews; a sales milestone records copies sold. Neither measure explains the other. More than six million worldwide sales show substantial commercial demand, while a 77 Metascore records a generally favorable but not universally enthusiastic critical response. Their coexistence does not prove that critics were wrong, that buyers rejected the reviews, or that review conditions drove sales.
When and where did the game launch?
Pearl Abyss says Crimson Desert launched globally on March 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, Apple Mac, Epic Games Store, and ROG Xbox Ally.
