Counterfeit graphics cards use dummy printed circuit boards (PCBs), imitation GPU packages, scrap memory, or altered firmware because those parts can make an inexpensive or nonfunctional board look like a premium model during a quick visual or software check. The construction is not one single scam: some cards contain an older, working GPU that has been relabeled in BIOS, while the most extreme examples may contain no usable GPU silicon at all.

A model name printed on the shroud, reported by Windows, or shown in a listing is therefore only a clue. Authenticity requires matching the exact board design and specifications, checking what the hardware reports, preserving a return option, and treating any teardown as an advanced repair operation rather than a routine buying step.

What a counterfeit GPU can contain

“Fake GPU” covers several different constructions. They do not all have the same risk or produce the same symptoms.

Construction What is actually on the board Why it can fool a buyer Typical verification issue
Relabeled working card An older or lower-tier NVIDIA GPU with modified video BIOS (VBIOS) The operating system and some utilities may display a more expensive model name The reported identity can be wrong even though the card boots and renders an image
Partially functional substitute A real GPU or memory configuration that does not match the advertised model The cooler, ports, stickers, and basic display output look plausible Capabilities, memory size, bus width, or performance do not align with the exact model
Dummy or nonfunctional board A plausible PCB with a missing, imitation, or unusable GPU package and possibly scrap memory The card looks complete from the outside and may survive a superficial inspection Only detailed testing or physical inspection can reveal that the central components are not usable

These categories can overlap. A card might have a genuine older chip with altered firmware, or a board assembled mainly to look convincing in photographs. A printed label or a firmware-reported name is not proof that the advertised GPU is physically present.

Why use a dummy PCB or fake die?

To make the outside look complete

A graphics card is a package of recognizable visual signals: a large cooler, several memory chips, a familiar connector layout, model stickers, and a substantial PCB. A dummy board lets a counterfeiter reproduce that appearance without supplying the expensive GPU and memory that make the card valuable. A fake die or package can fill the most obvious empty space if somebody removes the cooler.

The goal is usually to pass a quick listing review, photograph inspection, or casual buyer check. That explains why a board can look professionally assembled while failing as soon as it is tested. The available evidence does not quantify how often this occurs or the economics behind it; the motive is an apparent attempt to make a low-cost or broken board appear more valuable.

To exploit the limits of software identification

Most operating-system labels are derived from device identifiers and firmware tables. If those values are modified, a utility may initially display the name associated with a higher-end model. Software can verify what the board reports, but it cannot always prove that the package contains the silicon named by the firmware.

To make a used or damaged card easier to sell

A board that no longer works, has been stripped for parts, or contains scrap memory may still have resale value if it resembles a sought-after model. A complete-looking cooler and a convincing label can delay the moment when a buyer discovers the mismatch. This is a reason to buy from a seller and channel that provide a practical return process, not evidence that every used card is fraudulent.

What the documented cases show

The 2018 relabeling pattern

In a report published by BleepingComputer on October 15, 2018, GPU-Z’s developer added detection for certain known relabeled NVIDIA cards. The older GPUs had been modified through BIOS changes so they appeared to be higher-end products. When GPU-Z recognized one of the supported patterns, it prefixed the Graphics Card name with [FAKE] and displayed a caution symbol.

That warning is useful, but it is not a universal counterfeit detector. The 2018 account describes a set of known patterns, not every possible BIOS modification, board design, or later counterfeit method. GPU-Z has also changed over time, so a current download should be obtained from TechPowerUp’s official page rather than an untrusted mirror.

The 2026 imitation-die case

Tom’s Hardware reported on June 19, 2026, that a repair shop examined a purported RTX 4090 whose marked “die” was plastic rather than silicon. The report also described the memory chips as scrap and noted suspicious board markings, including an anomalous, future-looking manufacturing date. This is a specific repair-shop incident, not a market-wide estimate or proof that the technique is common.

The case illustrates why a counterfeit can be built in layers. A plausible PCB and cooler create the external appearance; a marked imitation package makes an opened card look populated; and nonfunctional memory can complete the illusion. None of those parts can deliver the performance of a real RTX 4090.

1. Record the exact identity before testing

  1. Read the manufacturer name, model number, serial or part number, connector arrangement, video outputs, and memory markings from the card itself.
  2. Compare those details with the card maker’s official materials for that exact model. Look at the PCB shape, cooler, power connectors, output positions, backplate, and component layout rather than relying on a product-family photograph.
  3. Ask a seller for current photographs of the actual card, including the label and connectors. Stock images and a retail box do not establish that the pictured hardware is what will ship.

2. Use GPU-Z as a low-risk first check

  1. Install GPU-Z from TechPowerUp’s official distribution page.
  2. With the card installed, compare the reported GPU name, device identifier, revision, BIOS version, memory type, memory size, bus width, clocks, and driver interface with the exact model’s published specifications.
  3. Look for the [FAKE] prefix and caution symbol in the Graphics Card field. If they appear, stop treating the card as genuine until the seller or a qualified technician resolves the discrepancy.
  4. Save a screenshot of every relevant GPU-Z field. NVIDIA support’s April 1, 2022 instructions also describe using GPU-Z to save a GeForce video BIOS when support requests it; keep that file only for legitimate troubleshooting and do not flash an unknown BIOS.

An absent warning does not certify a card. GPU-Z can identify supported relabeling patterns and expose contradictions between reported fields, but a new or unsupported counterfeit may report plausible values.

3. Check behavior without treating benchmarks as proof

Confirm that the card has the advertised memory capacity, supports the expected graphics APIs, drives the stated display outputs, and remains stable under normal workloads. Compare results with the exact model’s expected capabilities, not with a generic “high-end GPU” score. A benchmark can expose an obvious mismatch, but the available evidence does not define a universal score threshold that proves a card is counterfeit. Power limits, cooling, drivers, and system configuration all affect results.

4. Preserve evidence while a return route exists

  • Save the listing URL, description, seller messages, invoices, payment records, and delivery date.
  • Photograph the packaging, labels, serial number, PCB edge, connectors, and any damage before modifying the card.
  • Keep screenshots showing the reported model and any GPU-Z warning.
  • Contact the seller or the relevant marketplace support route promptly. The remedy depends on that purchase channel’s terms, so do not assume a particular refund or dispute result.

When physical inspection is justified

Removing a cooler can show whether a real GPU package is present and whether the visible memory and surrounding components correspond to the represented model. It can also damage thermal pads, strip screws, introduce static or contamination, and affect warranty coverage. NVIDIA’s warranty page describes terms for NVIDIA-branded GeForce cards; partner-card warranties, regions, and reseller policies can differ.

Choose a professional inspection when possible

If the card is under warranty, recently purchased, expensive, or still returnable, ask the seller, manufacturer, or a qualified repair shop to inspect it. A technician can document the package and memory without making you responsible for a failed reassembly. This is especially appropriate when the card shows a severe identity mismatch but still powers on.

If you elect to open it

  • First read the exact manufacturer’s warranty and return terms.
  • Power down, unplug the system, discharge residual power, and use appropriate electrostatic precautions.
  • Photograph screw locations, thermal pads, labels, and the board before removing anything.
  • Use the correct precision driver; some graphics-card screws require micro screwdrivers. A screwdriver set is only a mechanical aid and cannot detect fraud.
  • Do not scrape, rework, or reball the package merely to identify it. If markings, the package material, or memory chips look anomalous, stop and document the condition.

The 2026 repair-shop report found a plastic imitation die and scrap memory only after opening the card. That finding demonstrates what a teardown can establish in one case; it does not make dismantling every suspicious card a sensible first step.

Quick check versus teardown

Method Risk to card and warranty Effort and expertise What it can establish Best time to use it
Model and layout comparison None Low Whether the visible card matches the maker’s documented design Before purchase and immediately after delivery
GPU-Z and specification check Very low Low What the firmware and hardware interface report; some known relabeling detections When the card can be installed and tested
Capability and stability testing Low if kept within normal limits Moderate Obvious memory, feature, or performance mismatches After the basic identity check, while a return option remains
Cooler removal and visual inspection Possible damage or warranty impact High; repair experience recommended Whether a physical package and visible components are present and plausible After consulting warranty terms or through a qualified technician

What to do if the card is counterfeit

  1. Stop flashing firmware or running aggressive tests that could alter evidence or cause additional damage.
  2. Keep the card, packaging, and accessories in their received condition.
  3. Send the seller a factual description of the mismatch with dated photographs and GPU-Z screenshots.
  4. Use the purchase channel’s documented return or dispute process before its deadline.
  5. If the seller directs you to warranty support, follow the applicable manufacturer or distributor route. NVIDIA’s warranty guidance directs customers to the distributor or reseller in many cases and provides a separate route for direct purchases; warranty service is not a universal substitute for a counterfeit claim.
  6. If a technician opened the card, retain the inspection report and photographs. Do not claim a specific refund outcome until the seller or payment provider confirms it.

How common are dummy-PCB and fake-die GPUs?

No reliable published statistic establishes the prevalence of counterfeit GPUs. The 2026 plastic-die report is one repair-shop case, while the 2018 GPU-Z article documents a historical detection feature rather than a market survey. It is accurate to say that these constructions exist and that relabeled cards have been documented; it is not accurate to assign them a percentage of the market or claim a confirmed surge from these reports alone.

The practical rule for buyers

Use several independent clues: exact model documentation, the physical layout, GPU-Z fields, ordinary capability checks, and a seller with a workable return path. Treat a [FAKE] warning or a major specification contradiction as a stop signal. Treat a clean software report as evidence about what the card reports, not as proof that the silicon under the cooler is genuine. Physical inspection can answer that deeper question, but the warranty and return consequences make it a specialist step.
