Tomb Raider Chronicles exists because publisher Eidos Interactive needed a Tomb Raider release in 2000, even though Core Design believed it had finished with the original PlayStation and wanted to build the series’ next-generation PlayStation 2 game. The team initially rejected the assignment—programmer Del Gilchrist recalled, “We all said no. Everybody said no.”—then accepted after management offered financial incentives and promised that development would be followed by the PS2 project.
The short answer: Chronicles was a bridge release
Tomb Raider Chronicles was the fifth mainline Tomb Raider game and a PlayStation-era release dated November 24, 2000 by Crystal Dynamics. It followed Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation, which shipped in 1999 and was understood inside Core Design as the team’s final PlayStation entry before moving to PlayStation 2.
That plan collided with Eidos Interactive’s business timetable. The publisher wanted a Tomb Raider product in 2000 to keep the franchise visible and support its financial results. Core’s developers had already spent years shipping annual Tomb Raider games and wanted time to create the next-generation title instead. The result was not a project born from a fresh creative pitch; it was a deliberately compressed release intended to fill the gap before the PS2 game.
Why Core Design resisted another annual Tomb Raider
The team expected to move to PlayStation 2
After The Last Revelation, Core Design’s working assumption was that the next major effort would target Sony’s new console. A PS2 project offered the chance to rethink technology, level design and the series’ long-term direction rather than extend the limits of the original PlayStation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Years of annual production had taken a toll
Repeated yearly shipments had created a heavy-duty production cycle. The oral history describes developers as exhausted by the pace and unwilling to commit immediately to another roughly nine-month AAA sprint. Gilchrist’s blunt recollection—“We all said no. Everybody said no.”—captures the scale of the initial refusal rather than a minor scheduling objection.
How Eidos got the project approved
The impasse ended through a management compromise. Developers were offered financial incentives, and they were promised that completing the additional game would allow them to move on to the PlayStation 2 project afterward. That arrangement turned an outright refusal into reluctant acceptance. It solved the publisher’s 2000 release requirement without abandoning the planned next-generation transition.

The promise did not make the work feel like a normal, enthusiastically initiated sequel. Once production began, accounts describe a noticeably withdrawn atmosphere: people arrived wearing headphones, conversation diminished and the team worked through another intense schedule. The period is characterized as burnout, silence and resignation. Those details matter because they explain why Chronicles is often remembered as an obligation as much as a creative undertaking.
What happened to the more ambitious ideas?
Early concepts aimed beyond a simple stopgap
Planning included ideas such as abilities that would strengthen through repeated player use and branching narrative structures. Those concepts could have supported a more systemic and exploratory Tomb Raider, but the available time and the project’s bridge-game purpose made that scope impractical.

The final structure turned the compromise into a story device
The released game uses Lara Croft’s friends reminiscing about earlier adventures. This anthology-like framing gave Core a way to produce a fifth game without overturning the storyline and technology direction intended for the PS2 project. Instead of pretending that the new release was the start of a different era, the structure looks backward while the development team was trying to move forward.
Chronology of the decision
| Date | Event | Why it mattered |
|---|---|---|
| 1999 | Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation ships | Core Design treats it as the final PlayStation entry before a PS2 transition. |
| 2000 | Eidos requires another Tomb Raider release | Core develops Tomb Raider Chronicles despite its initial refusal. |
| November 24, 2000 | Tomb Raider Chronicles releases | Crystal Dynamics records this date for the fifth mainline game. |
| 2026 | Daryl Baxter’s The Making of Tomb Raider: 1997–2000 is listed by Google Books | The 256-page Pen & Sword volume documents the period that includes Chronicles. |
Chronicles versus the PS2 project Core wanted
| Comparison point | Tomb Raider Chronicles | Planned PS2 direction |
|---|---|---|
| Platform generation | PlayStation-era hardware | Next-generation PlayStation 2 |
| Development duration | Approximately nine months for another AAA sprint | Intended as the follow-up project after the extra release |
| Creative scope | Compressed concepts and a retrospective, episodic structure | Space for a new-generation design and technology foundation |
| Narrative purpose | Friends recount Lara’s previous adventures | The planned continuation beyond the PlayStation era |
| Team motivation | Reluctant acceptance after an initial unanimous refusal | The project developers had originally wanted to make |
| Publisher timetable | Required for a 2000 franchise release | Delayed until after the 2000 bridge game |
Was Tomb Raider 5 “forced” by Eidos?
“Forced” is fair as shorthand for the business pressure, but the precise account is more nuanced. Eidos required a release, while Core Design’s developers said no at first. Management then secured participation with incentives and a commitment that the team could proceed to PS2 afterward. The game was therefore authorized by the publisher’s timetable and made under negotiated conditions, not produced by a team that had volunteered for another annual sequel.

Did the schedule burn out the team?
The oral history directly connects the period with burnout. Developers had endured several annual Tomb Raider productions, then entered another approximately nine-month cycle after expecting to change platforms. The reported behavior—less conversation, headphones and a resigned working mood—describes the human cost of that cadence more clearly than a sales figure or review score could. It also explains why the game’s retrospective format was practical: it reused the franchise’s history while protecting the larger PS2 plan.

Why this production story still matters
Chronicles illustrates a recurring tension in game development. A publisher may need a recognizable product on a fixed annual calendar, while the developers need time to replace aging technology and recover from repeated deadlines. Core Design’s solution was a bridge title whose framing acknowledged the past and whose limited scope bought time for the future. The compromise delivered Eidos its 2000 Tomb Raider, but the testimony surrounding its creation records how reluctant that delivery was.
