Connect a Wi-Fi thermostat if you want to adjust heating or cooling remotely, manage schedules in an app, or use connected features such as energy-use information and, on some models, geofencing. The connection itself does not guarantee lower bills: savings depend on the thermostat’s features and whether its settings suit your household.
What Wi-Fi adds to a thermostat
Remote temperature control
The clearest benefit is being able to change your home’s heating or cooling when you are away. ENERGY STAR says Wi-Fi-enabled thermostats let users control home heating and cooling remotely through a smartphone. Depending on the model, controls may also be available through a tablet or computer, and app access may require an account and an internet connection. ENERGY STAR’s smart thermostat guidance explains the general feature; check the product’s terms for its exact requirements.
Schedules and automation
Many smart thermostats let you set schedules; some can learn preferences or use geofencing to adjust the temperature based on whether residents are home. These features can make it easier to reduce heating or cooling when it is not needed, but the results depend on how the schedule fits your routines and comfort needs. Features and how they work vary by model.

For example, Google says some Nest thermostats can add temperatures that a user turns up often to the schedule and may show utility programs available in the user’s area. Those are Nest-specific features, not capabilities to assume across all Wi-Fi thermostats. Google Nest’s guidance on energy savings also says its projections draw on actual household thermostat use, studies, and experiments performed by Nest; this is manufacturer-provided context, not a prediction for every home.

Usage information and software updates
Depending on the product, an app may show temperature or equipment-use information and the thermostat may receive software updates. The available data, update process, and duration of software support are product-specific; check the manufacturer’s current documentation.
Can Wi-Fi help reduce energy use?
It can, but connecting to Wi-Fi alone does not lower energy use. Savings are more likely when schedules or automation actually reduce heating or cooling at times when it is unnecessary.

ENERGY STAR says certified smart thermostats are independently certified using actual field data to deliver energy savings. Its certification process described on the current guidance uses a full year of anonymized and aggregated real-world customer data. That supports a category-level claim about certified models, not a guarantee of a particular household’s bill reduction. The consumer page gives broad context that almost half of the average American household’s annual energy bill goes to heating and cooling, but the estimate’s year is not stated and it should not be treated as current or representative of every household. ENERGY STAR smart thermostat guidance and its upgrade information describe the certification and savings rationale.

What happens if the internet goes out?
ENERGY STAR’s certification criteria require certified models to “Work as a basic thermostat in absence of connectivity to the service provider.” This means basic local temperature control should remain available on a certified model, but it does not mean its app, remote access, smart-home integrations, or cloud-dependent features will work offline. Do not assume the same offline behavior for a model that is not certified; consult its manual.
Wi-Fi features also depend on a reliable signal at the thermostat. ENERGY STAR recommends keeping the thermostat reasonably close to the router and notes that a Wi-Fi range extender may help if distance causes periodic disconnections. Check coverage at the installation location rather than relying only on signal strength elsewhere in the home.

What to check before connecting or buying
- Confirm HVAC compatibility. Check the thermostat maker’s compatibility guide for your heating and cooling equipment and any advanced or proprietary features. ENERGY STAR notes that very high-efficiency equipment may be best paired with a controller from the same manufacturer. Review ENERGY STAR’s buying guidance and the chosen model’s documentation.
- Check power requirements. Many smart thermostats need a consistent power supply. ENERGY STAR says most, but not all, use a C-wire; without one, you may have fewer model choices or need an adapter. Confirm the exact model’s requirements and do not assume adapters are interchangeable. ENERGY STAR’s upgrade guidance covers the C-wire consideration.
- Test Wi-Fi at the thermostat location. A weak signal can cause interruptions in connected features. Consider an extender only if coverage is inadequate where the thermostat will be installed.
- Compare the features you will actually use. Check app controls, scheduling, learning, geofencing, sensors, integrations, and software support. Do not assume every Wi-Fi thermostat provides the same features.
- Review privacy and data sharing. Read the provider’s current privacy and security information, including whether utility-program participation or other data sharing is optional. ENERGY STAR advises customers to ask their thermostat provider about data security and privacy. It says the federal government does not receive personally identifiable information or individual usage data from users of ENERGY STAR-certified thermostats; that does not establish that manufacturers or service providers receive no data. Read ENERGY STAR’s thermostat privacy FAQ.
- Check certification and local rebates. If energy-saving performance is a priority, look for ENERGY STAR certification. Rebates are location- and program-dependent, so check current eligibility through the ENERGY STAR Rebate Finder or your local utility.
When connecting makes sense
Wi-Fi is most useful if you expect to change settings while away, want app-based scheduling, or will use a supported connected feature. If you prefer to control temperature only at the wall and do not need app access, connecting may add little value. Before choosing a thermostat, compare HVAC compatibility, power needs, signal coverage, offline operation, features, certification, privacy settings, and local program eligibility.
