Confusion and failure can make a game more rewarding when they create a solvable problem. An unfamiliar rule, missed timing window, or defeated character gives you information; your next attempt uses that information; and a later success feels earned because you can see how your decisions changed. The effect is conditional, not automatic: difficulty without useful feedback or visible progress becomes frustration rather than fun.
The reward is reducing uncertainty, not suffering
When a game presents an unfamiliar mechanic or a difficult opponent, you do not yet know what will work. You are forming predictions: how far an enemy can reach, when a platform appears, which input triggers a move, or whether a risky route is worth taking. Each attempt tests those predictions.
A 2022 theoretical account based on predictive processing proposes that positive emotion can arise when uncertainty or prediction error falls faster than expected. In game terms, the pleasure is not confusion by itself. It is the change from “I have no idea what is happening” to “I understand the rule and can act on it.” If your understanding improves faster than you expected, the emotional payoff can be especially strong.

How a failed attempt can still move you forward
A loss has value when it changes what you know or what you can do. The attempt does not need to end in a win to produce progress.
It reveals a rule
Many games teach through consequences rather than a manual. Touching a hazard may show its activation range; attacking an armored enemy may reveal that a different damage type is required. The failed action narrows the set of possible explanations. On the next try, you are no longer testing every possibility.
It exposes a timing window
A missed dodge, jump, parry, or reload can identify the relevant timing. You may learn that an attack is safest just after an animation begins, that a platform remains open for only a short interval, or that a defensive move must be buffered earlier than it feels natural. The information is practical even when the character loses health or the run ends.
It tests a strategy
Failure can distinguish a bad plan from a bad execution. If a route collapses despite accurate inputs, you may need a different order of objectives, equipment choice, or resource policy. If the plan works until one mistake, practice can focus on that specific decision rather than restarting with no diagnosis.
It supports a smaller, self-chosen goal
Players can define progress below the level of “finish the game.” Reaching the next checkpoint, surviving one attack cycle, collecting a particular item, or reducing damage taken turns a difficult session into a sequence of observable gains. These goals matter because perceived improvement can sustain effort before a complete victory arrives.
Why winning after repeated losses feels earned
Expectation changes the emotional meaning of difficulty. If you believe that continued attempts can eventually work and that each attempt is teaching you something, a loss is compatible with progress. The eventual win confirms both the lesson and your growing ability.

Players often tolerate repeated setbacks in games built around gradual mastery because failure is expected as part of the loop. A difficult encounter can feel fair when the player can identify a mistake, choose a different response, and retry without an unreasonable cost. The victory then carries evidence of changed skill rather than merely a lucky outcome.
The opposite pattern is discouraging. When several attempts reveal no new information, produce no detectable improvement, or make success seem impossible, expectations shift from “I am learning” to “nothing I do will help.” At that point, another failure no longer promises discovery; it predicts more of the same. Persistence can stop even when the objective difficulty has not changed.
When confusion helps and when it hurts
The same amount of difficulty can motivate one player and repel another. Use these questions to distinguish productive uncertainty from harmful confusion.
| Question | Productive challenge | Frustrating challenge |
|---|---|---|
| What does the attempt teach? | A rule, pattern, timing cue, or strategic consequence becomes clearer. | The cause of failure is hidden or several systems change at once. |
| Is progress visible? | You can detect better timing, longer survival, a solved phase, or a self-set milestone. | Attempts look identical and no improvement is perceptible. |
| Do you expect success is possible? | The challenge appears demanding but understandable with practice. | Success seems arbitrary, inaccessible, or dependent on information the game never supplies. |
| What does a retry cost? | Restarting is quick or checkpoints preserve meaningful progress. | A short mistake erases a long, repetitive section with little new learning. |
| Who is playing, and where? | The challenge fits the player’s experience, goal, and setting. | The same demand is imposed on a novice learner, a tired player, or someone seeking a low-pressure experience. |
These are practical comparison axes, not a validated scoring system. They help explain why “hard” is not a complete description of a game’s emotional effect.
What studies can—and cannot—tell us
Predictive processing is a conditional theory
The 2022 theoretical article applies predictive processing to uncertain success in games. It argues that players may enjoy games because games let them improve the rate at which they reduce uncertainty. Its authors write: “We enjoy games—experience jolts of positive affect—and preferentially engage in them because and when they let us improve the rate at which we reduce their uncertainty.” The statement describes a proposed mechanism, not a universal law or a direct experiment proving that confusion itself is pleasurable.

Challenge can support learning in educational games
Hamari and colleagues’ 2016 study of game-based learning found that perceived challenge predicted learning outcomes. Challenge affected learning both directly and through engagement. The authors recommended that challenge keep pace with learners’ developing abilities.
This result concerns educational games and learning outcomes. It does not establish one ideal difficulty for commercial entertainment, nor does it show that making every game harder will increase enjoyment. It does support the narrower point that an appropriately demanding task can keep a learner engaged and involved in the work of understanding.
More features can make failure less productive
Chase and colleagues’ 2021 experiment with an early-middle-school programming game tested a full version containing narrative, performance metrics, high-quality graphics, and sound against a minimal version. Contrary to the researchers’ hypotheses, “players of the Full Game were less likely to choose coding challenges, were less tolerant of coding failures and gained less coding knowledge.”
The finding is specific to that educational programming setting. It is an existence proof that conventional polish can have unintended effects; it does not show that graphics, narrative, or metrics generally harm learning. The authors called for more research to isolate individual features and test whether the result generalizes.
Emotion regulation is associated with success in one exploratory study
A 2019 exploratory study examined 110 college-aged participants playing Physics Playground. The sample’s mean age was 22.14 years, with a standard deviation of 1.24. Participants played easy, medium, and difficult levels while reporting affect and regulation strategies. Cognitive reappraisal predicted in-game success when frustration or confusion was high.
That is a bounded association from an exploratory educational-game study. It does not establish that reappraisal caused success, represent all players, or apply to every game. It does suggest that how a player interprets a setback may matter alongside the game’s mechanics.

How good game design converts failure into feedback
Designers can make a failed attempt informative without making every obstacle easy. A useful failure loop has four parts:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Present a legible problem. The player should be able to form at least one plausible hypothesis about what to do.
- Deliver a discernible consequence. Animation, sound, spatial positioning, damage, or another response should indicate what happened.
- Allow a meaningful adjustment. The next attempt must permit a changed input, route, timing, build, or priority.
- Keep the retry cost proportional. A long restart can be justified when it preserves tension, but repetitive downtime should not obscure the lesson.
Failure can therefore function “as a signal for the player” to adjust actions and learn a solution, as Foch and Kirman summarize in their discussion of failure and game design. That signal is effective only when players can connect the consequence to an action and test a revised response.
What players can do when a challenge stops teaching
If repeated losses feel identical, change the learning process rather than simply repeating the same attempt.
- Name the immediate question. Ask whether you are testing range, timing, positioning, resource use, or a rule you have not identified.
- Change one variable. Use a different route or timing, but keep other choices stable so the result is interpretable.
- Set a narrow objective. Survive one attack cycle, reach one room, or execute one technique instead of demanding a full clear.
- Review the final mistake. Identify the earliest decision that made recovery unlikely; correcting that decision is usually more useful than replaying the entire sequence emotionally.
- Reduce avoidable retry cost. Use checkpoints, practice modes, lower-stakes areas, or shorter sessions when the game provides them.
- Stop when the expectation of progress disappears. Taking a break or choosing another activity is a rational response when attempts no longer produce information or improvement.
Examples across game situations
A boss with readable phases
An early defeat can reveal that a visual cue precedes a sweeping attack and that damage is safe only afterward. The boss remains dangerous, but each phase gives the player a specific prediction to test. A later win feels rewarding because the player can explain the sequence that made it possible.
A platforming section with ambiguous movement
If a missed jump shows the exact edge distance and the camera communicates the landing point, failure teaches control and spacing. If the camera hides the platform and the collision boundary is inconsistent, repeated misses create confusion without a solvable hypothesis.
A strategy game with a failed economy
A lost campaign can expose that early expansion consumed resources needed for defense. The lesson is useful if the game displays costs and consequences clearly enough to support a different opening. If victory depends on an undocumented rule, restarting may teach little.

A programming-learning game
An error message that points to a faulty condition can make a failed challenge a coding lesson. Extra narrative, scoring, or audiovisual features may improve engagement for some learners, but the Chase study shows that added features can also reduce willingness to choose coding challenges in a particular student population.
Why the effect is not universal
Players differ in prior knowledge, tolerance for repetition, available time, accessibility needs, and reasons for playing. A person seeking relaxation may not want a mastery loop. A novice may need explicit explanations before uncertainty becomes interesting. An expert may find a familiar pattern boring even when a beginner finds it opaque.
Genre and setting matter as well. Evidence from educational games cannot be transferred directly to competitive shooters, role-playing games, puzzle games, or narrative adventures. The available studies span theoretical work, educational-game experiments, a first-person-shooter challenge study, and designers’ perspectives; they do not establish a single effect across genres, player groups, or difficulty levels.
There is also no evidence here for a universal “optimal failure rate.” More deaths, retries, or confusion do not automatically improve a game. The useful design question is whether the player can see a path from the current attempt to a better-informed next attempt.
The practical answer
Confusion and failure make video games more rewarding when they create uncertainty that the player can reduce, produce feedback that supports a changed action, and preserve a credible expectation of progress. The reward comes from learning faster than expected and then demonstrating that learning in a successful outcome. When feedback is opaque, retry costs are excessive, or improvement cannot be detected, the same difficulty becomes discouragement. Challenge is therefore not a virtue on its own; it is rewarding when it functions as a comprehensible route to greater control.
