Coelacanths are called “living fossils” because living fish in the genus Latimeria were discovered in 1938 after coelacanths were known only from fossils and widely thought to have disappeared. Their broad body plan also resembles much older coelacanth fossils. The phrase is useful shorthand, but it is not a scientific designation and does not mean evolution stopped. Modern coelacanths are distinct species, have evolved over time, and are not the direct ancestors of humans or other land vertebrates.

The discovery that created the “living fossil” legend

Coelacanth fossils were known long before anyone recognized a living specimen. The Muséum de Toulouse describes coelacanth fossils from the Devonian, about 360 million years ago in its account, through the end of the Cretaceous, 66 million years ago. Because no living coelacanth was known, scientists treated the group as extinct.

That changed in December 1938, when Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer, curator of the East London Museum in South Africa, examined an unusual fish among a trawler’s catch. She recognized features unlike those of ordinary modern fishes and contacted ichthyologist J. L. B. Smith. Smith identified it as a coelacanth; the species was formally described in 1939 as Latimeria chalumnae.

The event was a rediscovery of a living lineage previously known from fossils. It was not evidence that one individual species had remained unchanged for hundreds of millions of years. The living fish belonged to a modern genus, Latimeria, distinct from the fossil genera, even though it retained recognizable coelacanth characteristics.

A second living species, Latimeria menadoensis, was discovered in Indonesia in the late 1990s and described in 1999. The two species known in the sources are:

Species Known range What it shows
Latimeria chalumnae Western Indian Ocean, including waters near the African coast The species recognized after the 1938 South African discovery
Latimeria menadoensis Indonesia A separately described living species, not a surviving specimen of an ancient fossil species

Smithsonian Ocean’s November 2018 reference and the 2013 African coelacanth genome study both emphasize this distinction between living Latimeria and earlier fossil forms.

What “living fossil” means—and what it does not

The expression bundles together several different ideas. In the coelacanth case, it usually points to three observations, but only two are scientifically defensible when carefully qualified.

Common implication Accurate interpretation
Known from fossils before living examples were found Accurate. Coelacanth fossils preceded the 1938 discovery of living Latimeria.
A broadly conservative body plan Partly accurate. Fossil studies find low morphological disparity across much of coelacanth history, and modern fish retain several recognizable traits.
Evolution stopped or produced an unchanged organism Inaccurate. Modern species have their own evolutionary history, and genetic as well as anatomical differences accumulated over time.

“Living fossil” is informal and debated among evolutionary biologists. The 2022 review Why Coelacanths Are Almost ‘Living Fossils’? explains that some researchers avoid the phrase because it can suggest biological stasis. A museum account from Toulouse similarly challenges the idea that a living coelacanth is simply an ancient fossil brought back to life.

A more precise description is: a living member of a lineage with a substantial fossil record, whose broad morphology has changed relatively slowly compared with that of many other groups. “Relatively slowly” is a comparison, not a claim of zero change.

Did coelacanths really stop evolving?

No. Evolution includes changes in genes, anatomy, physiology, behavior and population structure. A lineage can retain a recognizable overall shape while still accumulating many changes that are invisible from a fossil or a casual visual comparison.

Fossil evidence: conservative shape, not perfect sameness

Fossil analyses summarized in the 2022 Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution review describe low morphological disparity across much of coelacanth history. In plain language, major features of the body plan occupy a relatively narrow range compared with groups that diversified into many dramatically different forms.

The 2013 Nature genome paper says living coelacanth morphology resembles fossils dating back at least 300 million years. That statement concerns overall anatomical similarity. It does not identify a modern Latimeria individual, or even its species, as the same biological entity represented by a Devonian or Paleozoic fossil.

Genetic evidence: some rates are slow, others are not

Molecular evolution is not measured by looking at body shape. Researchers compare DNA sequences and estimate substitution rates—the rate at which one genetic letter is replaced by another over generations.

The African coelacanth genome study reported that coelacanth protein-coding genes evolve significantly more slowly than those of tetrapods, while noting that this pattern did not apply to other genomic features. This is a narrow result about particular sequence categories. It cannot be expanded into “the coelacanth genome does not evolve.”

The 2022 review also summarizes evidence for slower substitution rates in some mitochondrial and nuclear measures, especially protein-coding genes, while discussing exceptions and alternative interpretations. Slow molecular evolution may help preserve an overall body plan, but it does not erase mutation, natural selection, genetic drift or adaptation.

Why a stable body plan can persist

A body plan may remain broadly stable when a lineage occupies an environment in which the existing design continues to work well. That situation is sometimes described as stabilizing selection. It does not prevent change in traits that are less visible, such as immune genes, reproductive biology, sensory systems or physiology.

Coelacanths live in deep marine environments and are difficult to observe directly. Their lobed fins, slow movement and specialized ecology make them unusual, but unusual does not mean outside normal evolutionary processes. The fossil record also has gaps, so apparent stability may partly reflect which traits fossilize and which intervals have been sampled.

How old are living coelacanths?

The lineage is ancient, but a living fish is not hundreds of millions of years old. A modern coelacanth develops from a modern egg, carries DNA inherited through recent generations and belongs to one of two extant Latimeria species.

The fossil record gives a long history for coelacanth relatives. The Toulouse account places known fossils from roughly 360 million years ago to 66 million years ago. The genome paper uses a more specific comparison, noting that living coelacanth morphology is similar to fossils at least 300 million years old. These figures describe the age of fossils and anatomical comparisons, not the age of any individual animal.

The 2022 review cites estimates from Mahé and colleagues’ 2021 work on growth lines in L. chalumnae. It reports a probable lifespan of about 100 years, earliest sexual maturity around 49–69 years and gestation of approximately five years. These are study estimates, not settled universal values for every coelacanth or both species.

Are coelacanths our ancestors?

No. Coelacanths are lobe-finned fishes and are valuable for studying the transition and diversification of vertebrates, but living coelacanths are not fish halfway through becoming land animals. They are surviving relatives on a separate branch of the lobe-finned fish family tree.

The 2013 genome study used phylogenomics—comparisons across many genes—to examine relationships among coelacanths, lungfish and tetrapods. Its conclusion was that lungfish, not coelacanths, are the closest living relatives of tetrapods. Humans, birds, reptiles and amphibians are tetrapods.

That relationship does not make lungfish our direct ancestors either. It means lungfish and tetrapods share a more recent common ancestor with one another than either does with coelacanths. All three lineages have continued evolving since their branches separated.

What makes coelacanths scientifically important?

  • A rare window on deep vertebrate history: Living tissues and genomes can be compared with a long fossil record.
  • Lobed fins: Their paired fins have internal bones and muscles that provide useful comparisons with the fin structures of other lobe-finned fishes.
  • Genome-level evidence: The African coelacanth genome helps researchers test hypotheses about gene evolution and vertebrate relationships.
  • A warning about visual similarity: A familiar outline can conceal extensive genetic and physiological change.
  • A test case for evolutionary-rate questions: Coelacanths let scientists ask why some traits and gene categories change slowly while others do not.

The scientific value lies in comparison, not in treating the animal as an evolutionary time capsule. Researchers can compare a living genome, living anatomy and fossil structures, but no modern species is a frozen sample from the Devonian.

How many coelacanths are there?

Do not treat historical specimen counts as current population estimates. The 2013 genome paper noted that 309 individuals had been recorded during the preceding 75 years, citing personal communication in that paper. That figure is an old, source-qualified count of recorded individuals, not a present global census.

Coelacanths are rarely encountered, live in deep habitats and are vulnerable to accidental capture and other pressures. The difficulty of surveying them means that abundance estimates carry substantial uncertainty. A low number of sightings can reflect biology and sampling conditions as well as population size.

What is their conservation status?

Conservation wording must be tied to a geography and legal system. NOAA Fisheries’ page, updated August 11, 2025, identifies the Tanzanian distinct population segment of the African coelacanth as threatened under the United States Endangered Species Act. The same page notes that African coelacanth is listed in CITES Appendix I.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That statement does not establish one current category for every coelacanth population under every national law or international assessment. Regulatory classifications can change, and a legal designation for a Tanzanian distinct population segment should not be rewritten as a blanket claim about all coelacanths worldwide.

A precise answer to the title question

Coelacanths are called living fossils for historical and comparative reasons: fossils were known first, living representatives appeared unexpectedly in 1938, and the modern fish retains a broad form recognizable in fossils hundreds of millions of years old. The phrase becomes misleading only when it is taken literally.

Modern Latimeria species are not unchanged ancient organisms, evolution did not stop, and coelacanths are not our direct ancestors. Their slower evolution in some measured traits and gene categories is scientifically interesting precisely because it is partial and relative. The best use of “living fossil” is therefore as a memorable description of a rediscovered lineage—not as a claim that time stopped for the animals themselves.
