Clip-on earbuds can sound quiet when their speakers are not aimed close enough to your ear canals, the earbuds are positioned incorrectly, your phone or earbuds are turned down, or a speaker port is blocked. They can also be audible to people nearby because open-ear designs do not seal the ear canal. Fit, listening volume and room noise determine how noticeable either problem becomes.
Start with the model’s orientation and placement instructions, then check both volume controls, test another app or track, inspect the speaker openings and reconnect the earbuds. If you raise the volume to overcome traffic or conversation, protect your hearing instead of turning it up without limit.
How clip-on earbuds produce sound—and why the result differs from sealed earbuds
A conventional in-ear earbud forms at least a partial seal in the ear canal. That seal helps couple the driver’s output to your ear and reduces the amount of outside sound competing with the music. A clip-on or open-ear earbud rests on or beside the outer ear, leaving the canal open. Its speaker must direct sound across a short air gap toward the canal rather than press sound through a sealed tip.
That arrangement provides situational awareness, but it makes placement an acoustic variable. Moving the speaker a few millimetres can change how much sound enters the canal. A secure clip can still be acoustically misaligned if the driver points toward the cheek, hair or empty space instead of the ear opening. Because the canal is open, some of the driver’s output also radiates into the room; nearby people may hear it under certain conditions.

There is no single leakage level for every clip-on design. Driver direction, enclosure, fit, listening level and background noise all matter. A quiet bedroom makes faint leakage easier to hear than a busy street, while loud surroundings may tempt you to increase the volume enough to create more leakage and more hearing risk.
Most common reasons clip-on earbuds sound quiet
| What you notice | Likely reason | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Both sides are quiet | Low phone or earbud volume, a quiet source recording, or incorrect positioning | Check both volume controls, then reposition the speakers |
| Only one side is quiet | One speaker port is obstructed, one side is rotated differently, or the Bluetooth connection is incomplete | Compare left and right in a mirror and inspect the quiet side |
| Music is quiet but calls are normal | App-specific output, track mastering or an audio profile issue | Try another app and media file |
| Sound changes when you move | The speaker is not held consistently near the canal | Adjust the clip until it remains stable during head movement |
| Sound became quiet suddenly | Wax or debris at a speaker opening, a software state, or a connection problem | Inspect and clean only as the model manual permits, then reconnect |
Incorrect orientation or distance
Left and right clips can look similar, and a reversed side or rotated driver may send sound away from the canal. Even when the side is correct, the speaker can sit too high, too low or too far forward. Glasses arms, hair and hats can push a clip out of its intended position.
For Bose Ultra Open Earbuds, Bose says a proper fit affects comfort and sound quality. Its guidance shows the earbuds at about a 45-degree angle and advises sliding them slightly up or down until they feel secure. When audio is quiet, Bose specifically recommends sliding them down so the speaker ports sit closer to the ear canal. That angle is a Bose Ultra Open instruction, not a universal setting for every clip-on model.

Low source or earbud volume
Phones, computers and earbuds can maintain separate volume levels. A phone may show a high slider while the earbuds’ own level remains low, or a computer may be sending audio through a call profile rather than the full-quality stereo media profile. Check the physical or touch volume control on the earbuds and the operating system’s media volume.
Do not assume a single song represents the hardware. Mastering levels vary between tracks, podcasts and streaming services. Loudness normalization, equalizer presets, hearing-protection limits and application-specific volume controls can all change perceived output.
Blocked speaker openings
Skin oils, earwax, dust and fabric fibres can cover a small grille or port. A partial obstruction often sounds like reduced treble or muffled speech rather than complete silence. Inspect both sides under good light. Follow the exact cleaning procedure in your model’s manual; do not push pins, needles, paper clips or other sharp objects into a port, and do not introduce liquid unless the manufacturer explicitly allows it.

Bluetooth profile, app or connection state
A device connected for calls may use a lower-bandwidth hands-free profile. Disconnecting and reconnecting can restore the normal stereo media profile. If two source devices are connected, the second device may be holding the active audio route or sending a low-level notification stream. Temporarily disconnect the second device while testing.

Step-by-step troubleshooting
- Confirm the sides and fit. Check that the left and right earbuds are on the correct ears. Use a mirror and compare their position with the model’s illustration. Move each speaker closer to the canal without pressing it into the opening. For Bose Ultra Open Earbuds, try the manufacturer’s approximately 45-degree placement, then slide the earbuds up or down; Bose’s low-audio instruction is to slide them down so the ports sit nearer the canal.
- Set a safe, comfortable level. Raise the phone or computer media volume and the earbud volume separately until speech and music are clear. Stop when the level is comfortable; a loudness problem caused by a bad fit should be fixed by repositioning rather than by unlimited volume increases.
- Test another source. Play a different track, a locally stored file and audio from another application. If only one service is quiet, inspect that app’s volume, normalization and equalizer settings. If every source is quiet, continue with the hardware and connection checks.
- Verify stereo Bluetooth output. In the source device’s Bluetooth settings, select the earbuds as the media-output device and use the stereo profile when available. Temporarily disable call audio or other competing output routes during the test.
- Inspect both speaker ports. Look for wax, lint or other debris. Clean only with the method specified for that exact model. Never insert a sharp tool into the grille.
- Remove competing connections. Disconnect tablets, laptops or phones that are also paired or connected. Then play audio from one source so you can identify which device is controlling the stream.
- Reconnect and reset if necessary. Turn Bluetooth off and on, place the earbuds in their case or charging dock if applicable, restart the source device and pair again. If the model provides a factory-reset procedure, follow its manual exactly; a reset normally clears pairing information, so be prepared to pair the earbuds again.
- Check for a physical fault. If one side remains substantially quieter after a clean port, correct fit, known-good source and fresh pairing, document the symptom and use the manufacturer’s support or warranty process. Do not disassemble a sealed clip to reach the driver.
Why other people may hear open-ear earbuds
Open-ear earbuds leave the canal uncovered by design. Their speakers direct much of the output toward the wearer, but sound that misses the ear can travel into the room. Leakage becomes more noticeable as volume rises, as the speaker moves farther from the canal and as the surrounding environment becomes quieter.
Bose describes the Ultra Open Earbuds as directing sound toward the ears while minimizing leakage. Bose also states that nearby people will generally not notice typical listening, while acknowledging that sound may be noticeable at very high volume in a very quiet environment. That is a manufacturer description, not an independent measurement or a guarantee for every listener, room or clip-on design.

A practical leakage check
- Set the earbuds to the level you actually use, rather than an unusually low test level.
- Stand in a quiet room and ask someone to sit at a normal conversational distance. Have that person report whether words or music are intelligible, not merely whether a faint hiss exists.
- Repeat while speaking normally and while moving your head. A clip that shifts during movement may leak more because its driver is no longer aimed at the canal.
- Test the place where you intend to use the earbuds: an office, train, gym or street. Background noise changes both audibility to others and the volume you feel you need.
If privacy is essential—for example, confidential calls in a quiet office—an open-ear design cannot provide the same acoustic isolation as a sealed in-ear or over-ear design. Choose a design that matches the privacy requirement instead of assuming that “open ear” means “silent to everyone else.”

Turning up open-ear earbuds to defeat traffic, conversation or an air conditioner can expose you to more sound than intended. The World Health Organization gives a practical personal-device guideline of no higher than 60% of maximum volume, recommends using device monitoring where available, taking listening breaks and reducing exposure time as sound intensity rises. Its exposure examples are 80 dB for up to 40 hours per week and 90 dB for four hours per week.
Recommended Free Tools
Those decibel examples describe sound-exposure guidance, not a calibration of your particular earbuds. A phone’s 60% slider is not a universal decibel measurement, and the same percentage can produce different levels with different earbuds, recordings and fit. Treat the percentage as a conservative starting point, not proof that your ears are receiving a specific dB level.
- Lower the volume before entering a noisy environment, then increase only enough for clear listening.
- Take regular quiet breaks, especially during long work or travel sessions.
- Use a phone or operating-system exposure monitor when available, while remembering that estimates vary by device.
- Stop and seek professional assessment if you have persistent ringing, muffled hearing, pain, dizziness or difficulty understanding speech after listening.
When a different design may be the better answer
Replacing clip-on earbuds is not automatically a cure for quiet sound or leakage. A different model may fit your ears better, place its driver closer to the canal or offer more adjustment, but all open-ear products leave some path for sound to escape. Evaluate the features that directly affect your use:
| Decision point | What to check in person or in the manual | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Stability | Whether the clip stays in place while walking, turning your head and wearing glasses | Movement changes the speaker-to-canal distance and perceived loudness |
| Speaker adjustment | Whether the driver can move vertically, rotate or slide | More adjustment can make alignment easier on different ears |
| Comfortable-volume loudness | How clear speech and music are at a level you can tolerate for the intended session | A louder maximum specification does not prove safer or better everyday listening |
| Nearby audibility | What a listener at normal conversational distance can hear in your actual environment | Leakage depends on volume and surroundings, not just the product category |
| Awareness of surroundings | How much outside sound you need to hear | Open designs improve awareness but provide less isolation and privacy |
Ask for the exact model’s fit instructions before applying advice from another product. Controls, reset steps, water resistance and cleaning methods differ, and Bose’s Ultra Open placement guidance should not be treated as a rule for unrelated earbuds.
Quick Recap
Quick diagnosis checklist
- Are the left and right earbuds on the correct ears?
- Is each speaker opening aimed toward, and close to, the corresponding canal?
- Did you check both the source-device and earbud volume?
- Does another track or app play at a normal level?
- Is the device using stereo media output rather than a call profile?
- Are the speaker ports clear of wax, lint and dust?
- Have you disconnected a second paired device?
- Does the problem remain after reconnection or the model-specific reset?
- Is leakage being judged at your real listening level and normal conversational distance?
- Are you increasing volume because of background noise, and can you take a quieter break instead?
