A JSON parser can only read JSON: if a command sends human-readable text or diagnostics into the stream your pipeline parses, the parse fails. Set the CLI’s output format explicitly, keep standard output (stdout) separate from standard error (stderr), and check the command’s exit status. The OpenAI CLI is one documented example: its piped output defaults to readable text, so scripts must request JSON or JSONL rather than assume the underlying API’s structured response will pass through unchanged. The exact cause of any particular failure depends on the CLI and the captured output.
Why a CLI response can fail JSON parsing
A command-line tool has an output contract of its own; it is not necessarily the same as the API or service it calls. A CLI may print a readable answer, a status message, or a diagnostic instead of a JSON document. Even a command that can produce JSON may default to another format, and that default can vary by tool or release.
There is also a stream distinction. A process can write its result to stdout and diagnostics to stderr. If a wrapper merges those streams, a parser expecting one JSON document may receive extra text before or after it. That is a likely failure mode, not proof of what happened in a specific pipeline: the command and its actual captured output determine the cause.

Check the CLI’s output format before changing the parser
Read the installed command’s help and current documentation. Confirm its default output, supported machine-readable formats, stream behavior, and version. Do not infer the CLI’s output from the fact that its underlying API returns structured data.

The OpenAI CLI documentation says successful responses default to readable text, including when piped. For scripts, it documents selecting a format explicitly with --format json or --format jsonl. See the CLI output guide and its scripting examples; because this is a live project page, verify the available options against the version installed in your environment.

Capture the intended stream and preserve failures
When stdout is the parser input, capture stderr separately so warnings and debug messages do not become part of the JSON text. Keep the exit status too: a failed command can emit partial output, and valid-looking output does not by itself mean the operation succeeded.
Process APIs make this distinction explicit. Python’s subprocess documentation describes capturing stderr separately or redirecting it to stdout. Node.js child processes expose stdout and stderr streams when configured as pipes; see the Node.js v17 child-process documentation. Some higher-level shell wrappers instead return combined output together with an exit code, as shown in the Responses API reference. Check the contract of the API your pipeline actually calls rather than assuming it behaves like a raw subprocess.

OpenAI’s CLI examples also document --debug output on stderr. That is useful for troubleshooting, but reinforces why a JSON parser should receive the intended data stream rather than an indiscriminately combined log. See the CLI scripting examples.

Debug the failure in a controlled sequence
- Run the exact command outside the pipeline. Capture stdout, stderr, and the exit status independently. Avoid relying on a terminal display alone, since it may visually combine streams.
- Check the installed CLI’s interface. Use its current help and documentation to confirm default output, supported machine-readable formats, and whether diagnostics go to stderr.
- Request the format the next step expects. For the documented OpenAI CLI, select
--format jsonfor a JSON document or--format jsonlfor line-delimited JSON, after confirming the specific command supports the intended shape. - Pass only the data stream to the parser. Keep stderr available for logs, but separate it from stdout if stdout is the JSON input.
- Check the exit status before treating output as a successful result. Record the status and handle command failure separately from JSON parsing failure.
- Inspect parse errors with context. When parsing fails, log a safe excerpt of the captured stdout and the status; keep stderr as a separate diagnostic. This helps distinguish non-JSON defaults, merged diagnostics, partial output, and an actual malformed response.
- Handle streaming as streaming. If the CLI can emit partial results before an error event, use its documented streaming format and completion or error signals. The OpenAI CLI guide notes that output can appear before an error event even when the command exits unsuccessfully.
Why a streaming response needs different handling
A stream may deliver multiple chunks or records rather than one complete JSON document. Feeding the stream to a parser designed for a single finished document can fail even when each event is valid in its own format. Follow the CLI’s documented streaming protocol, wait for its completion signal, and handle error events and unsuccessful exit status instead of treating early output as a completed result.
