Deleting temporary files primarily gives you more free disk space; it is not a guaranteed speed upgrade. If your Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC is nearly full, freeing space can help it operate normally and may prevent update failures. If storage is not the bottleneck, removing another batch of temporary files may produce no noticeable change in boot time, application launches, or game frame rates.
Microsoft provides Storage Sense, Disk Cleanup, and Cleanup recommendations for reclaiming space. When cleanup does not solve the slowdown, use Task Manager and Windows troubleshooting to identify high CPU, memory, or disk activity, excessive startup programs, outdated software, malware, or hardware that has become inadequate.
What deleting temporary files actually changes
Temporary files are working data created by Windows and applications. Some are removed automatically; others remain until a program, Windows, or you delete them. Removing them changes the amount of available storage. It does not directly add processor cores, increase memory, repair a failing drive, or make software code run faster.
Responsiveness depends on the resource that is limiting the computer. A drive with very little free space can leave Windows and applications less room for updates, caches, paging, and other operations. Microsoft therefore treats low storage as one possible performance factor and recommends freeing space when needed. That is a conditional benefit, not evidence that every temporary-file cleanup produces a measurable speed increase. Microsoft’s documentation does not provide a percentage, boot-time reduction, or other benchmark for the effect.

In practical terms, cleanup is worthwhile when you are running out of space, seeing “low disk space” warnings, or unable to install an update. If the system drive has comfortable free capacity and the symptom is high CPU use or slow application processing, storage cleanup is unlikely to address the cause.
Will deleting temporary files make my computer faster?
Sometimes, indirectly. A nearly full system drive can contribute to sluggish behavior and can interfere with Windows updates. Recovering space may restore normal operation in that situation. On a PC that is not storage-constrained, however, deleting temporary files is maintenance rather than a performance tune-up.
Do not judge the result by the amount deleted. A large cleanup can recover gigabytes yet leave an unchanged bottleneck, while a smaller cleanup can resolve an update failure if it provides the specific space Windows needed. Check available space before and after, then observe whether the original symptom changes.

Windows cleanup tools compared
Windows 10 and Windows 11 include three overlapping ways to review and remove unnecessary data. Their differences are automation, scope, and how much control you have over each category.
| Tool | Purpose | Scope and control | Important behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| Storage Sense | Automated cleanup of selected unnecessary files | Runs on the system drive; you configure which categories and schedules are allowed | Downloads and locally available cloud content are not removed unless you explicitly configure those choices |
| Disk Cleanup | Manual removal of temporary and system-file categories | You select a drive and tick individual categories after reviewing their descriptions | Can offer previous Windows installation files; deleting them removes the ability to roll back to the earlier version |
| Cleanup recommendations | Surfaces candidates for review | Shows categories such as temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps | You review the suggested items before confirming deletion |
For Microsoft’s current descriptions of these features, see Manage drive space with Storage Sense and Free up drive space in Windows. Labels and layout can differ slightly between Windows 10 and Windows 11, so follow the wording shown on your edition.
How to free up space safely
1. Check what is using the drive
- Open Settings.
- In Windows 11, choose System > Storage. In Windows 10, choose System > Storage; the page may present categories in a somewhat different layout.
- Let Windows calculate categories such as installed apps, temporary files, documents, and other data.
- Open the largest relevant category rather than deleting everything indiscriminately. This tells you whether temporary files are actually the main consumer.

2. Review Storage Sense before enabling it
- From Settings > System > Storage, open Storage Sense (Windows may place it under storage-management options).
- Turn on automatic cleanup only after reviewing its configuration.
- Choose when Windows should run and which temporary-file categories it may remove.
- Read the settings for the Recycle Bin, Downloads, and cloud-storage content. Storage Sense works on the system drive, and it does not clean Downloads or locally available cloud files by default unless you select behavior for them.
- Run the cleanup or wait for the schedule, then return to the Storage page to verify the recovered capacity.
Because Storage Sense follows your selected settings, it is safer to treat the configuration as a deletion policy, not as a universal “clean everything” switch.
3. Use Cleanup recommendations for a second review
- Open Settings > System > Storage and select Cleanup recommendations when it is available.
- Expand each category and inspect file names, sizes, and the proposed action.
- Select only items you recognize as expendable, then confirm the cleanup.
This view is useful when the largest opportunity is an unused application, a large file, or a cloud-synced item rather than temporary data.
4. Run Disk Cleanup when you need category-level control
- Open the Start menu and search for Disk Cleanup.
- Choose the drive Windows asks you to examine, normally the system drive.
- Review each category’s description and select only what you intend to remove.
- Choose Clean up system files if you need to inspect additional Windows categories, then review the list again.
- Confirm the deletion and wait for the process to finish.
Be especially cautious with Previous Windows installation(s). Removing that category can eliminate the option to return to the earlier Windows version. Keep it if you are still within a rollback period or are troubleshooting a recent upgrade.

Why your PC can remain slow after cleanup
Startup programs and background activity
Applications that launch with Windows consume memory and may use CPU or disk resources before you open anything. To inspect them, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, select Startup apps, and review the Startup impact information. Disable an entry only when you know what it does and do not need it to start automatically. In the Processes view, sort by CPU, Memory, or Disk to find activity that coincides with the slowdown.
High CPU, memory, or disk use
Task Manager can distinguish different bottlenecks. Sustained high CPU suggests an active computation; memory pressure can cause Windows to page data to storage; high disk activity can indicate transfers, indexing, updates, or an application waiting on the drive. Record which process is responsible and whether the usage persists after a restart. Deleting files without identifying that process does not correct the underlying workload.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOutdated Windows or applications
Install relevant Windows updates and update applications from their normal vendor-supported channels. Updates can address compatibility, reliability, and security issues that present as instability or poor performance. If an update cannot install because the drive is full, use Storage Sense, Disk Cleanup, or Cleanup recommendations first; Microsoft also maintains guidance on freeing space for Windows updates.

Malware or unwanted software
Unexpected CPU, memory, network, or disk use can come from malicious or unwanted software. Run a scan with your installed Windows security tools, keep their definitions current, and investigate detections according to the security product’s instructions. Temporary-file deletion is not a substitute for malware detection.
Hardware that no longer meets the workload
Older PCs may have a processor, memory capacity, graphics component, or storage device that is simply insufficient for current applications. Microsoft notes that software troubleshooting may produce little improvement on aging hardware and that an upgrade can be the better long-term option. An internal solid-state drive is one possible upgrade to investigate if storage latency is verified as the constraint, but compatibility, form factor, interface, capacity, operating-system migration, and backup requirements must be checked first. It is not necessary or guaranteed to help every slow PC.
A short diagnostic sequence when cleanup did not help
- Measure free space: open Settings > System > Storage and note the system drive’s available capacity.
- Reproduce the problem: identify whether the delay occurs during startup, when opening one application, during multitasking, or under a particular workload.
- Check Task Manager: sort Processes by CPU, Memory, and Disk while the symptom is occurring; then inspect Startup apps.
- Apply pending updates: restart when Windows requests it and retest after installation completes.
- Scan for malware: use your security software if resource use is unexplained or behavior is suspicious.
- Assess hardware: if resource use is not abnormal but the workload remains slow, compare the PC’s hardware with the requirements of the applications you use and consider an upgrade or replacement.
This sequence prevents repeated cleanup from becoming a substitute for diagnosis. Each step tests a different likely cause and gives you a more specific next action.
Common cleanup mistakes to avoid
- Deleting without reading: category names can include rollback files, installation data, or content you may still need.
- Assuming Downloads are temporary: personal installers, documents, and media often live there. Storage Sense does not remove them unless you configure it to do so.
- Measuring only gigabytes recovered: storage reclaimed is not the same as processing time saved.
- Repeating cleanup for a non-storage problem: if Task Manager shows a CPU-heavy process or memory pressure, investigate that process instead.
- Skipping backups before major changes: preserve important files before deleting large categories or changing hardware.
What result should you expect?
The defensible expectation is additional free space and, when low storage was interfering with Windows or updates, a possible return to normal behavior. There is no universal speed percentage or guaranteed reduction in boot or application-launch time. If the PC was not storage-bound, the visible performance change may be zero even after a substantial cleanup.
Use the built-in Windows tools to solve a capacity problem, verify the result, and then move to resource, software, security, or hardware diagnosis when the symptom remains. Microsoft’s broader troubleshooting guidance is available in Tips to improve PC performance in Windows.
