When Claude stops responding or says you cannot continue, the message—not the interruption alone—points to the next step. A Claude.ai usage limit, a prompt that exceeds the available context window, an API rate limit, and an account restriction are different issues with different remedies. A chat ending by itself does not prove your account was suspended.
Identify what kind of limit or problem you have

If Claude.ai says you have few or no messages remaining
Claude.ai usage allowances depend on plan and can be affected by several aspects of how you work. Anthropic lists message length, attachment size, conversation length, tool use, model choice, effort level, artifact creation and use, and multi-step tasks as factors. Allowances and reset timing can change, so use the information shown for your account rather than relying on a fixed message count or reset interval.
Check usage and the available options
For paid-plan users covered by Anthropic’s guidance, session and weekly usage can be viewed in Settings > Usage. Check the plan-specific usage documentation and follow any reset information or options presented in your account. See Anthropic’s usage limit best practices.

- Combine related questions into one focused request instead of sending many separate messages.
- Provide the relevant background up front and keep the prompt concise.
- Include only the attachments needed for the task.
- Reuse relevant project material when appropriate. Anthropic says project content can be cached and counts less against limits while it remains cached.
If Claude reports a length or context-window limit
This is a prompt-size problem, not the same as running out of Claude.ai messages. Anthropic’s Education FAQ says the error occurs when a prompt exceeds Claude’s available context window. The exact wording may differ by interface.

- Remove irrelevant instructions, quoted text, or background from the prompt.
- Reduce or remove large attachments, then try again.
- If the conversation itself has grown too long, start a new conversation and carry over only the essential context.

If you received a 429 from the Claude API
An API 429 is a developer-facing rate-limit response. It is separate from the message allowance shown to a Claude.ai user. Anthropic explains that the response describes which limit was exceeded and includes a retry-after header with the wait time. Its June 26, 2026 guidance covers request-per-minute, input-tokens-per-minute, and output-tokens-per-minute limits; limits apply at the organization level and vary by tier.

- Read the error details to identify the limit that was exceeded.
- Check the
retry-afterheader and wait for the specified interval before retrying. - Review your organization’s current tier and limits in the Claude Console.
Refer to Anthropic’s API rate-limit guidance for the current details.
If the chat stops unexpectedly or you cannot access your account
Do not assume an interruption means your account was restricted. Contact support with the exact error text, when the problem began, and whether you use Claude.ai or the API. If you can sign in, use Get help in Claude to open the support messenger. Anthropic says support is asynchronous; replies appear in the messenger and your account email. Keep follow-up in the same issue conversation rather than creating duplicate requests.

If you cannot sign in, open a message from the Help Center and choose “I can’t login.” Support options differ by account: free accounts have documentation and Fin, while access to the human Product Support team depends on plan and organization role. See Anthropic’s support instructions.
If Claude says your organization is paused
An explicit paused-organization notice is different from an ordinary chat ending. Anthropic’s safeguards guidance describes a review option for an affected organization. Follow the instructions in the notice and the relevant safeguards and appeals guidance. That page does not establish that a chat ending on its own means an account was suspended.

Why fixed message counts and reset times can mislead
Usage allowances, usage displays, support eligibility, API tiers, and safeguards processes can change. The current information in your Claude account and Anthropic’s Help Center is more reliable than a fixed message count or a reset schedule quoted elsewhere. Diagnose the specific notice you received, then use the remedy for that notice rather than treating every interruption as the same problem.
