Chromebook keyboards replace the traditional Caps Lock key with a Search or Launcher key because that key is assigned to system navigation: it searches the Chromebook or opens the app Launcher. Caps Lock was not removed; Google provides a shortcut, Alt+Search or Alt+Launcher, and lets you remap the key to Caps Lock in Settings.
Google’s current help pages document what the key does and how to customize it. They do not document the original historical decision to omit a dedicated Caps Lock key, so claims about a specific design motive should be treated as speculation rather than established fact.
What the Search or Launcher key does
It is a system-navigation key
On a Chromebook’s built-in keyboard, the key labeled Search or Launcher starts a search or displays your apps. Google describes the Launcher as a place to find and organize files, settings and installed applications. That makes the key a shortcut to the operating system’s discovery tools rather than a modifier for typed letters.

The label depends on the Chromebook and ChromeOS version. Google’s keyboard documentation uses both “Search key” and “Launcher key,” while the physical key may show one name or the other. Functionally, those names refer to the same keyboard position and the same family of actions.

The “Everything Button” name
Google Chromebook Community Manager Rebecca introduced “Everything Button” as another name for the Launcher or Search button in a post dated October 28, 2020. The explanation was that the button could search across files, apps, Google Drive and the web. “Everything Button” is therefore a marketing and explanatory label for the existing Search or Launcher control, not a separate key or a replacement for Caps Lock.
What is known about the missing dedicated Caps Lock key
Google’s current Chromebook Help material establishes the key’s present role, the Caps Lock shortcut and the remapping option. It does not say when Google made the original layout decision, why a particular model omitted a dedicated Caps Lock key, or whether every Chromebook manufacturer followed the same rationale.
That distinction matters. It is accurate to say that Chromebook assigns this prominent key to search and app discovery and supplies Caps Lock through another command. It is not accurate to present an unverified story about saving space, improving typing speed, discouraging capital letters or making the keyboard more efficient as Google’s confirmed reason. No comparative evidence establishes that this layout is ergonomically or productively superior to a conventional Caps Lock layout.

How to turn Caps Lock on and off
Use Alt with Search or Launcher
Press Alt+Search when the key is labeled Search. On a Chromebook labeled Launcher, press Alt+Launcher instead. The combination toggles Caps Lock without changing any settings. Press the same combination again to turn Caps Lock off.
This is the standard shortcut documented by Google for Chromebook keyboards. The Alt key is the left or right Alt key available on your keyboard; the important part is pairing it with the Search or Launcher key rather than pressing Search or Launcher alone.
Use Fn+Quick Insert on supported keyboards
Google’s keyboard guidance also lists Fn+Quick Insert as a Caps Lock shortcut on supported Chromebook keyboards. Quick Insert is not present in the same form on every model, so this alternative is hardware-dependent. If your keyboard has no Quick Insert key or the combination does nothing, use Alt+Search or Alt+Launcher.
Recognize the difference between Search and Caps Lock
Pressing Search or Launcher by itself opens the search or app interface. Pressing Alt together with that key invokes Caps Lock. If a search panel appears when you intended to change capitalization, check that Alt was held down for the complete key press.

How to remap the key to Caps Lock
If you use Caps Lock frequently, ChromeOS lets you make the Search or Launcher key behave as Caps Lock. The setting changes the action assigned to that physical key; it does not require a new keyboard or an add-on utility.
- Open Settings on the Chromebook.
- Open the keyboard controls under Device.
- Find the built-in keyboard’s key-remapping control, labeled Remap keyboard keys in Google’s instructions.
- Select Search or Launcher as the key you want to change.
- Assign Caps Lock, then close Settings and test the key in a text field.
ChromeOS labels can vary between versions, so the wording or placement of the remapping control may not be identical on every Chromebook. Look specifically for the keyboard section under Device and for an option that lists individual keys and their replacement actions.
After remapping, pressing that key performs Caps Lock rather than opening Search or Launcher. If you still need quick access to apps and files, open the Launcher from the shelf or use another available shortcut. You can return to the original behavior at any time by assigning Search or Launcher back to the key in the same settings panel.
How external keyboards map to Chromebook shortcuts
A Chromebook can use an external keyboard, but the key names are based on the keyboard’s original layout. Google documents these substitutions for Search or Launcher shortcuts:

For example, when a Chromebook shortcut says to use Search, use the Windows key on an attached Windows keyboard. With a Mac keyboard, use Command where the shortcut instructions call for Search or Launcher. These substitutions concern Chromebook shortcut behavior; the physical layout and printed legends on the external keyboard do not change.

If you rarely use Caps Lock
Keep the default Search or Launcher assignment and use Alt+Search or Alt+Launcher whenever you need Caps Lock. This preserves one-key access to the Launcher and avoids changing the Chromebook’s documented shortcut behavior.
If Caps Lock is central to your work
Remap Search or Launcher to Caps Lock in the Device keyboard settings. This is useful for workflows that require frequent all-capital text, provided you are comfortable opening apps and searching through another route.

If you move between built-in and external keyboards
Learn both mappings. On the Chromebook itself, Search or Launcher is the relevant key. On an external Windows keyboard, substitute the Windows key; on an external Mac keyboard, substitute Command for Chromebook shortcuts. Keeping the shortcut translation in mind prevents you from assuming that the printed Search label must appear on every keyboard.

Troubleshooting Caps Lock and Search behavior
Alt+Search opens the Launcher instead of toggling Caps Lock
- Confirm that the Alt key is held while Search or Launcher is pressed.
- Use the label that matches your keyboard: Search on one model, Launcher on another.
- If your keyboard supports Quick Insert, try Fn+Quick Insert as the alternative documented by Google.
- Check whether the key was remapped in Settings. A remapped key no longer follows its original action until you restore Search or Launcher.
The remapping option is hard to find
Open Settings and look under Device for keyboard settings. The relevant control is the built-in keyboard’s Remap keyboard keys option, although exact labels can differ by ChromeOS release. Make sure you are editing the Chromebook’s built-in keyboard entry rather than looking for a general accessibility switch.
Shortcuts do not work with an external keyboard
Translate the Chromebook shortcut to the external keyboard’s equivalent: Windows replaces Search or Launcher on a Windows keyboard, and Command replaces Search or Launcher on a Mac keyboard. A key’s printed legend is not a reliable guide to the name used in ChromeOS shortcut instructions.
What the layout does—and does not—tell you
The keyboard shows a product priority: search, files, settings and applications are available from a dedicated top-level key. Caps Lock remains available, but through a deliberate shortcut or an optional remap rather than a dedicated physical button. Different Chromebook models or manufacturers may have made layout decisions at different times, and the available official guidance does not assign one universal reason. The safest conclusion is therefore practical: use Search or Launcher for discovery by default, use Alt+Search or Alt+Launcher for Caps Lock, and remap the key when your workflow makes capitalization more important than one-key search access.
