Chrome remains the leading Android browser because it is already familiar and often the default, works closely with Google accounts, and shares its underlying Blink engine with many competing browsers. Those factors help explain its staying power, but they do not prove Chrome is the best browser for every person—or that users choose it for one uniform reason.
How far ahead is Chrome on Android?
Two recent measures show Chrome’s substantial lead, but they count traffic rather than people’s stated preferences.
- Cloudflare’s global 2025 measure: 85% of Android requests observed through Cloudflare Radar came from Chrome; Samsung Internet accounted for 6.6%. This is a share of observed requests, not a survey or census of Android users. Cloudflare Radar’s 2025 Year in Review.
- UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), June 2025: Chrome represented 80% of UK Android mobile web-traffic share of supply, Samsung Internet 16%, and Firefox, DuckDuckGo, Edge, and Brave about 1% each. Figures are rounded and specific to the UK and the CMA’s traffic measure. CMA final decision report.
The figures are not interchangeable: one is Cloudflare’s global request measure, while the other is the CMA’s UK market measure. Both indicate a large Chrome lead, but neither establishes why an individual chooses it.

Why does Chrome keep its position?
It is often already there and set as the default
When a browser is preinstalled or selected as the default, many users can browse without searching for, installing, or switching to an alternative. The CMA’s historical UK analysis found Chrome preinstalled on most Android mobile devices and set as the default on around 44%. It also found a strong association between preinstallation or default status and use. Those are findings from the CMA’s analysis of 2020 UK data, not current worldwide installation figures. Google-account continuity makes staying convenient
Google says signing in to Chrome can make bookmarks, passwords, and other saved information available across devices, and can sign users into Google services. Chrome sign-in is optional. For someone already using Google services, keeping browser data in that ecosystem can reduce friction; that convenience is a plausible reason to stay, not proof that every user values it. Google Chrome Help: Sign in to Chrome.
Familiarity and compatibility reinforce one another
A browser that is already in use is less likely to require learning a new interface or moving saved information. The underlying engine also matters to compatibility: many Android browser brands use Blink, the engine associated with Chromium. Familiarity and a shared engine can reinforce the sense that switching is unnecessary, even when another browser offers a different interface or tools.

Does choosing another browser mean choosing another engine?
No. Browser brand and browser engine are different things. The CMA measured Blink at about 99% of Android browser-engine supply in the UK in June 2025, with Firefox’s Gecko as the key alternative. That figure describes engine supply in the CMA’s UK analysis; it is not a browser-brand share. CMA final decision report.
Many apps can therefore offer different interfaces, privacy controls, or account features while sharing Blink. Firefox is a notable alternative in the CMA analysis because it uses Gecko. An engine alone does not determine a browser’s full feature set, privacy behavior, or security.

What are the main alternatives to Chrome?
The CMA identified Samsung Internet, Firefox, Edge, Opera, Vivaldi, DuckDuckGo, Brave, and other Android browsers. In its June 2025 UK traffic figures, Samsung Internet was the only named alternative with a materially larger share than the group reported at about 1% each. That market position does not establish which browser is right for you.
- Samsung Internet: a substantial alternative in the CMA’s UK traffic measure, at 16% in June 2025.
- Firefox: the key Gecko-based alternative in the CMA’s engine analysis.
- Brave: its Google Play listing advertises ad blocking, tracking protection, private tabs, bookmark sync, and other features. These are publisher-described features, not independent proof of superior privacy or security. Check the current listing and settings for the version you use. Brave’s Google Play listing.
- Edge, DuckDuckGo, Opera, and Vivaldi: additional options identified in the CMA’s review of Android browsers.
How should you choose an Android browser?
Start with the trade-off that matters to you, rather than treating market share or an engine label as a verdict.

- Account continuity: If you rely on Google services and want Chrome’s documented cross-device access to saved information, that may make Chrome convenient.
- Privacy and blocking controls: Compare the controls actually offered in the app you plan to use. A browser’s advertised features do not, by themselves, prove it is the strongest option for privacy or security.
- Default and familiarity: Consider whether you actively chose your current browser or simply began using the one already installed. Changing the default can alter which app opens links, but it does not require changing your engine.
- Performance and battery: Do not infer a universal winner from vendor benchmarks or tests run on different phones, software versions, and methods.
A fair comparison would use the same Android device and version, browser versions, websites, network, privacy settings, and tasks. Published examples illustrate why conditions matter: Brave describes vendor-run tests on a Pixel 6a with Android 13 and versions current July 1, 2025; Google’s 2026 article discusses Chrome 146 benchmark work on newer Android hardware. These are different setups, not a head-to-head comparison. Brave’s Android performance methodology; Google Chromium: Android Sets New Record for Mobile Web Performance.
What the market figures cannot tell you
Traffic share is not a direct measure of preference, satisfaction, quality, privacy, security, speed, or battery life. The available figures explain Chrome’s reach and some structural reasons it may persist; they do not establish a definitive best Android browser or a single cause for its popularity.

The CMA also cautioned that Cloudflare’s Q2 2025 in-app browsing categories changed substantially and had unclear scope. It did not place weight on those category shares in its assessment. They should not be mixed with browser-only traffic figures. CMA Annex A: Market outcomes.
