Chorus waves have been considered major drivers of relativistic electron microbursts, but a 2026 analysis found that only a very small percentage of the chorus waves in its dataset coincided with these brief bursts. The result challenges a broad explanation without showing that chorus waves cause the events—or that they never contribute.

What chorus waves and relativistic microbursts are

Earth’s Van Allen radiation belts are regions of energetic charged particles held by the magnetosphere. Chorus waves are naturally occurring electromagnetic waves in the surrounding plasma. Their name comes from the sound a radio receiver can produce when it detects them. These waves can accelerate trapped electrons to high speeds and have been considered important drivers of electron microbursts.

A relativistic microburst is a brief, intense episode in which highly energetic electrons leave the outer radiation belt and precipitate into Earth’s atmosphere. Eos describes the surge as lasting less than one second. Microbursts may affect radiation-belt hazards and atmospheric chemical composition, though the Eos account does not quantify those effects.

What the 2026 analysis found

Jorge Romero-Minaya and coauthors analyzed observations from NASA’s THEMIS and SAMPEX missions collected between June 2010 and November 2012. Their study, “Observational Analysis on the Relationship Between Chorus Waves and MeV Microburst Electron Precipitation,” appeared in Geophysical Research Letters in 2026. Eos’s Sarah Stanley summarized the findings on 22 September 2026 in Eos.

As summarized by Eos, only a “very small percentage” of chorus waves coincided with relativistic microbursts—fewer than prior studies led researchers to expect. The summary gives no exact percentage, event count, or matching criteria, so the result should remain qualitative here. The waves associated with microbursts tended to have larger amplitudes and other distinguishing characteristics.

Why the result changes the picture, but does not settle causation

The finding complicates the idea that chorus waves broadly account for relativistic microbursts. If only a small fraction of observed waves coincided with the bursts, the overall chorus-wave population may be less informative than the characteristics of the particular waves involved. Larger amplitude and other distinguishing traits could mark a subset worth investigating as a contributor at these high energies.

Coincidence is not proof of cause. The Eos summary reports an observational association; it does not establish that chorus waves triggered the microbursts. Nor does a low coincidence rate in this dataset rule out chorus-wave effects on radiation-belt electrons generally, or show that chorus waves never contribute to microbursts.

What remains uncertain

The underlying paper’s DOI is 10.1029/2026GL124627. The available Eos summary does not report the study’s exact event totals, fraction, uncertainty, detailed matching method, or limitations. Those details are needed to assess how the association was defined and how broadly the result applies.

The observations themselves date from June 2010 to November 2012; 2026 is the publication year of the paper and the Eos spotlight, not the date of newly collected measurements. The cautious takeaway is that the reported pattern questions a broad presumed role and makes a smaller, distinctive wave subset a plausible avenue for further study.
