ChatGPT cites a source when it uses web search and wants to show where information came from. Selecting a citation opens the referenced page; on desktop web, a citation can also be previewed, and the Sources panel may list cited pages and other relevant links. That citation is a path to evidence, not a guarantee that the answer is correct.
To check an answer, compare the exact wording of the claim with the source, inspect the relevant passage, check when the page was published or updated, and judge whether the publisher is authoritative for that subject. OpenAI warns that search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect, and that ChatGPT can produce fabricated citations. Important claims therefore require your own verification.
What a ChatGPT citation actually means
A citation in a ChatGPT response usually indicates that web search was used to find information relevant to the answer. The citation gives you a way to inspect the page that ChatGPT relied on. Select it to open the source. On desktop web, you may also be able to preview the citation without leaving the conversation. When available, the Sources panel gathers cited sources and other links that ChatGPT considers relevant.

Your job is different. You must decide whether that page really supports the statement ChatGPT made, whether the information is current, and whether the publisher is qualified to make that claim. Treat those as separate steps rather than assuming that a linked page validates the entire response.

When search is involved
ChatGPT can select search when current web information may help, and in interfaces where search is available you can also invoke it manually. Whether search appears and how it behaves depends on the product context. In Enterprise and Edu workspaces, administrators’ settings, user roles, usage limits, and restricted-access controls can affect retrieval and citations.
Ordinary answers and deep-research reports
A response that uses web search may contain citations, but not every response has to. Deep-research reports are a distinct experience: OpenAI describes those reports as including citations or source links that readers can verify. The presence or absence of a citation therefore tells you something about how the response was produced, but it does not by itself establish accuracy.
Why a citation is not proof
Opening a source is necessary, but it does not settle the question. OpenAI cautions that search results and citations may be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect. A page can be genuine while still being unrelated to the precise claim, too old for the question, or based on another unverified account.

A citation-shaped label in an answer is not evidence that the cited document contains the claimed material. Confidence in the wording is not a reliability score; a fluent, certain-sounding paragraph can still be wrong.
OpenAI’s Help Center guidance on truthfulness puts the practical rule plainly: “Always verify quotes, data, technical information or references to external documents.” Verification matters most when a mistake could affect a decision, a publication, a purchase, a security action, or another consequential outcome.

How to check whether a citation supports an answer
Use the following workflow for each material claim rather than giving the whole response a single pass/fail label.
- Isolate the claim. Rewrite the sentence as one testable statement. Separate multiple assertions joined by “and,” “because,” or “therefore.” A single citation may be displayed beside a paragraph containing several different claims.
- Open the cited page. Select the citation in the response. If you are on desktop web and a preview is available, use it to orient yourself, then open the page when you need to inspect the full context.
- Find the supporting passage. Search within the page for the key term, number, organization, date, or quotation. Read the surrounding paragraphs, headings, footnotes, and any definitions instead of relying on a matching phrase alone.
- Compare scope and wording. Check whether the source supports the same subject, location, time period, population, edition, and conditions. “May,” “can,” and “was reported” do not mean the same thing as “does,” “will,” or “proves.” If the source describes a possibility, the answer should not present it as a certainty.
- Check publication and update dates. Note when the page was published and when it was last updated, if those dates are shown. A source can accurately describe an earlier situation while failing to answer a current question. Make sure the date fits the claim, not just the date of your conversation.
- Assess authority. Ask why this publisher should be trusted for this particular subject. An official regulator, standards body, manufacturer document, academic institution, or original data publisher may be appropriate for one question, while a specialist publication or first-hand technical document may be better for another. Authority is claim-specific, not a permanent property of a website.
- Look for primary evidence. Prefer the original announcement, filing, dataset, specification, court document, study, or direct statement when the question calls for it. A page that merely repeats another article can help you locate the primary material but is weaker evidence on its own.
- Check every important number and quote. Confirm units, ranges, sample or geographic scope, and whether a figure is a one-time allowance, a recurring value, or a promotional statement. For quotations, verify the exact wording and who said it. Do not assume that quotation marks in ChatGPT’s answer mean the source used those words.
- Compare with independent evidence when the stakes justify it. A second authoritative source can reveal a stale page, a disputed interpretation, or a missing qualification. Independence matters: two pages copying the same original error are not two confirmations.
- Ask for a better search when the result fails. If a citation is wrong or unsuitable, ask ChatGPT to search again with a specific source, date, or location. State the constraint explicitly, such as the official standard, the current version, or the jurisdiction you need. Then repeat the same inspection process on the new result.
A practical evidence checklist
For a fast review, assess each cited page against these four questions. They correspond to the most useful comparison axes for deciding whether a source earns the wording used in an answer.

If one row fails, narrow the answer rather than silently treating the citation as confirmation. For example, you may be able to say that a publication reported something, but not that the event is independently established.
Common citation problems and what to do
The page mentions the topic but not the claim
Search engines often retrieve pages that share vocabulary with a question. A page about a technology may never support a specific compatibility statement, release date, or performance figure. Quote the relevant passage to yourself and compare its subject and conditions with the answer. If the connection is only thematic, find a source that addresses the claim directly or ask ChatGPT to search again with the missing detail.
The source is old
An old page is not automatically false. It may be the correct source for historical information, a version that has not changed, or an archived policy. It is unsuitable when the question asks what is true now and the underlying subject changes over time. Ask for a current source and specify the date or version you need.

The source is secondary or anonymous
A secondary account can be useful context, but it may compress qualifications or repeat an earlier mistake. Trace its links to the original document where possible. If the publisher’s identity, methodology, or evidence is unclear, describe the statement as an unverified report rather than established fact.
The citation does not open or the page is restricted
A broken link, paywall, login requirement, or region restriction prevents you from checking the evidence. Do not treat inaccessible material as verified. Look for an openly available primary version or ask ChatGPT for a source you can access, naming the required publication, date, or location.
The citation appears fabricated
Check whether the title, author, publication, and page actually exist. Search the publisher’s own site or catalog rather than trusting a copied reference. If no real record can be found, discard the citation and the unsupported claim. ChatGPT’s ability to produce a plausible-looking reference is not proof that a document exists.
Several citations disagree
Do not choose the answer with the most links. Compare each source’s date, authority, definitions, and underlying evidence. The disagreement may come from different jurisdictions, versions, measurement conditions, or meanings of the same term. Ask ChatGPT to identify the exact conflict and to search for the controlling or primary source.
How to prompt for more checkable evidence
A precise request gives both the search system and you a clearer standard. Include the subject, geography, time frame, edition or version, and source type when those details matter.

- Ask for the current rule from the responsible official body, not a general explanation.
- Specify a date range when historical or time-sensitive information is involved.
- Request sources that are accessible without a login if you need to inspect them.
- Ask ChatGPT to separate facts directly supported by a source from its own interpretation.
- Request the relevant passage or a concise description of what the source establishes, then verify it on the page yourself.
- If the first result is wrong, explicitly ask it to search again using the source, date, or location you require.
These prompts improve traceability; they do not remove the need to read the source. A betterly constrained search can still return an incomplete or incorrect citation.
Workspace and availability considerations
Search and citation behavior is not identical in every ChatGPT environment. In Enterprise and Edu, workspace configuration can determine whether retrieval is available, which roles can use it, how usage limits apply, and whether access to particular sites is restricted. A missing citation may therefore reflect product or administrator controls rather than a conclusion that no source exists.
When you are reviewing a response in a managed workspace, confirm that your role is allowed to use search and that the relevant site is not blocked. If colleagues receive different results, compare the workspace settings, permissions, and time of the search before interpreting the difference as a disagreement in evidence.

Current facts
For a current fact, date alignment is central. Verify that the source was updated recently enough and that it covers the location, organization, product version, or policy named in the question. A citation to an older page can explain why ChatGPT produced an answer without proving that the fact remains current.

Technical instructions
Check the exact version, operating environment, prerequisites, and command or setting shown in the source. A general documentation page may support a concept while not supporting the particular command ChatGPT supplied. Follow the source’s procedure and note warnings, permissions, and compatibility conditions before applying it.

Claims about studies or statistics
Confirm that the cited study or dataset exists, then inspect who was measured, how the result was obtained, and what the authors actually concluded. Do not generalize a limited sample, a preliminary result, or a correlation into a universal rule. If ChatGPT names a study that you cannot locate, treat the statistic as unverified.
Quotes and historical material
Locate the original document or a reliable transcript and check the surrounding context. A shortened quotation can reverse the meaning of the complete passage. Verify the speaker, date, translation, and edition when those details affect interpretation.

A repeatable review routine
For occasional questions, the numbered workflow is enough. If you routinely use ChatGPT for research, apply a consistent record-keeping routine:
- Copy the exact claim into your notes.
- Record the source title, publisher, and the page’s publication or update date.
- Save the passage that supports the claim and note any conditions or exceptions.
- Mark whether the page is primary evidence or a secondary account.
- Record unresolved conflicts, missing dates, restricted access, or claims you could not verify.
- Rewrite the final statement to match the evidence’s scope, using qualified wording where necessary.
This process prevents a citation from becoming a decorative footnote. It also makes it easier to revisit an answer when a page changes or a newer source becomes available.
The bottom line on ChatGPT citations
ChatGPT cites sources to make web-based answers inspectable. Use the citation as a starting point, then verify the exact claim on the linked page, check its date and authority, and prefer primary evidence when the question requires it. Because citations can be incomplete, outdated, incorrect, or fabricated, important information should never be accepted solely because a link appears next to it.
