ChatGPT can give different answers to the same question because language models can generate more than one plausible continuation. OpenAI says this variation can occur across separate queries. But the title’s suggested three-run test has no prompt or transcripts available, so there is no basis to claim what changed in those runs. The explanation below covers what can vary and how to make a real comparison meaningful.
Why the same prompt can produce different answers
Language models generate text by predicting what should come next, and more than one continuation may be plausible. OpenAI says that this means the same question can receive different answers across queries. That explains why variation is possible; it does not identify the cause of any particular difference or show that one answer is wrong. OpenAI’s explanation of how ChatGPT and its models are developed describes this inherent element of randomness.
What can change between three runs
Without the exact prompt, complete outputs, model label, interface, and run details, it is not possible to say whether three responses differed in wording, factual claims, recommendations, or anything else. A useful comparison should distinguish surface-level changes from substantive ones:
- Presentation: wording, tone, length, and organization may differ while the main answer stays the same.
- Substance: claims, explanations, recommendations, or included details may change.
- Coverage: one response may omit a point present in another. If an answer ends abruptly, distinguish a cutoff from an intentional omission.
Differences alone do not prove that an answer is inaccurate. Conversely, repeated agreement is not proof that a claim is true: verify important factual claims independently.

How to make a three-run comparison fair
For a comparison readers can assess, record the exact setup and show the full results. Treat these details as reporting practices, not as facts established about any unprovided test.
- Copy the exact prompt and note whether the conversation included earlier messages or other context.
- Record the product interface, visible model label, date and time, and any relevant settings or personalization that are available to you.
- Run the prompt three times under the same recorded conditions, then preserve each complete output.
- Compare factual claims, recommendations, tone, organization, and omissions separately. Note whether a response was cut off before treating missing text as a substantive difference.
- Check consequential claims against reliable sources instead of treating agreement between responses as verification.
Can better prompting make answers identical?
No. Clear, specific instructions and enough context can make a response more relevant and useful, but they do not guarantee identical wording or content. OpenAI recommends refining prompts iteratively and dividing complex tasks into smaller, focused requests when useful. OpenAI’s prompt-writing guidance offers those practices as ways to improve results, not as a way to eliminate variation.
