If an agent helps with the same work across multiple sessions, a transcript alone may not carry forward the preferences, lessons, and project facts that matter. Chat history records what was said; persistent memory selects and organizes useful information so a later run can retrieve it. That distinction explains why an agent may seem to forget—and why adding memory is a design choice, not a guarantee of better results.
Chat history and agent memory do different jobs
A conversation transcript preserves messages from a session. It can help an agent respond to the current exchange, but it does not automatically give a future run a concise, relevant account of earlier work.
Persistent memory is a layer that carries selected information across runs. The OpenAI Agents SDK documentation distinguishes memory that helps future sandbox-agent runs learn from earlier runs from Session memory, which stores message history. Microsoft makes a similar distinction between short-term context for the current session and long-term knowledge used across sessions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWithout a useful carryover mechanism, a recurring workflow can require repeated corrections or rediscovery. These are plausible costs of losing context, not measured outcomes established by the cited documentation. Persistent memory can help with continuity, but it also introduces the possibility of stale, incomplete, or incorrect information.

What a working memory system has to do
Memory is more than saving a longer transcript. A practical system needs to decide what to retain, how to organize it, and when to retrieve it.
- Extract or retain: identify potentially useful facts, preferences, decisions, or lessons from recent work. This step determines what may persist rather than keeping every message as equally important.
- Consolidate: organize overlapping notes and, where possible, address conflicts so that accumulated records remain usable.
- Retrieve: supply relevant stored information to the agent when a later task needs it, rather than expecting the agent to search an unfiltered transcript.
Microsoft Foundry Agent Service documents extraction, consolidation, and retrieval as phases in its memory service. The Hindsight paper describes a related three-part framing: retain, recall, and reflect. These are examples of memory-system designs, not proof that every implementation uses the same pipeline.

How Hindsight structures memory beyond a transcript
Hindsight’s December 14, 2025 paper treats memory as a structured resource for reasoning. Instead of relying only on a chronological conversation log, it describes four logical networks:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- World facts: information about entities and the wider environment.
- Agent experiences: records of what the agent has encountered or done.
- Entity summaries: synthesized descriptions that organize information about particular entities.
- Evolving beliefs: representations of what the system currently believes as information changes.
The paper presents traceable updates as a design goal: later information should be able to update what is known without making the basis for a belief impossible to follow. Its motivation is that simple extraction-and-retrieval systems may blur evidence with inference, struggle over long horizons, or fail to keep preferences consistent. Those are the paper’s framing of the problem, not settled findings about every other memory system.

The authors report benchmark results that illustrate the potential of this approach, but they are conditional. On LongMemEval, Hindsight with an open-source 20B backbone scored 83.6% overall accuracy, compared with 39.0% for a full-context baseline using the same backbone. On LoCoMo, the same 20B setup scored 85.67%, compared with 75.78% for the strongest prior open system reported in the paper. With larger backbones, the paper reports 91.4% on LongMemEval and 89.61% on LoCoMo. These are paper-reported results on specific benchmarks and model setups, not a forecast of performance in a production workflow. See the Hindsight paper.
Memory has to persist—and stay relevant
Persistence depends on the implementation. In the OpenAI Agents SDK sandbox-memory capability, memory artifacts are files in a workspace. A later run can use them when it reuses the configured memory directory through the same live sandbox or through preserved state or a snapshot. A fresh, empty sandbox starts with empty memory. The SDK describes a process that distills prior-run lessons into compact notes, uses a summary for orientation, and lets the agent search an index and open more detailed summaries as needed. These details apply to that SDK capability; they are not universal requirements for all agent memory systems. See the OpenAI Agents SDK sandbox documentation.

- AIBI: Your Pocket AI Friend — This small smart device fits in your hand and goes anywhere. Talk to it, ask questions, and get answers. Easy to keep on your desk, attaches to your screen, or carry in your pocket
- Smart Enough to Know You — AIBI's camera helps it recognize your face and remember you. It gets to know you like a real pet would, making each interaction feel special
- Chat About Anything — Ask AIBI for jokes, weather updates, or help with questions using ChatGPT. It learns how you talk. When two AIBIs are close, they can even chat with each other via the near-field communication technology

- Great Gift for Anyone — This smart little buddy that can talk, play, and be a great companion. AIBI makes a perfect gift that anyone will enjoy using
Even persisted memory may no longer describe the current situation. The SDK advises treating memory as guidance and trusting current environment information when stored notes may be stale. A useful system therefore needs a way to update or correct remembered information, limit its scope, and remove it when appropriate.

Managed services offer different memory controls
Some frameworks build memory around workspace files; managed services expose memory operations through a service or API. Their features and availability can change, so check the current documentation before choosing one.

How to decide whether your agent needs persistent memory
Memory is most relevant when work recurs across sessions and selected information needs to carry over. It may be unnecessary when tasks are self-contained, short-lived, or already have reliable context supplied by another source.
- Match memory to the task: distinguish remembering a user preference from recalling a prior tool action, researching documents, or supporting a long-horizon plan. One benchmark may not measure all of these.
- Check grounding and accuracy: ask whether retrieved information is relevant and whether the system can distinguish stored evidence from a synthesis or inference.
- Measure the full cost: account for time and resources spent writing or consolidating memory as well as retrieving it. The Hindsight team’s March 23, 2026 benchmark post identifies accuracy, speed, cost, and usability as comparison dimensions.
- Review governance: verify how memories are scoped and isolated, who can access them, how long they persist, and how updates and deletion work.
- Test against your workflow: LongMemEval and LoCoMo focus on chatbot history. The Hindsight team argues that these datasets may not adequately represent agent work involving research, planning, tools, and multiple sources; this is the authors’ benchmark critique, not a universal assessment of every benchmark.
For the limits of those benchmark comparisons, see the Hindsight team’s benchmark-methodology post. A strong result on a chatbot-history benchmark is useful evidence for that test, but it does not by itself establish how well a memory design will support your agent’s actual tasks.
