People change a Wi-Fi password to stop people or devices that should no longer have access from joining the network. It is especially useful after the password has been shared more widely than intended or may have been exposed. Changing it is an access-control step—not a requirement to rotate it on a fixed schedule.

What changing the Wi-Fi password does

Devices use the Wi-Fi network password, also called the network security key, to join the wireless network. Replacing it means devices need the new password to connect, so anyone who does not receive it loses access. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises using a unique, secure network password to prevent strangers from getting onto the network; people on an unprotected network may use the internet connection and could see personal information. FTC: How To Secure Your Home Wi-Fi Network

This makes a password change useful when you no longer want a former guest, contractor, or other person to connect, or when you suspect someone has learned the password without permission. Those are practical reasons to change it, not a published rotation schedule.

Wi-Fi password vs. router administrator password

These credentials protect different things. The Wi-Fi password controls who can connect to the network. The router administrator password controls who can open the router’s settings and change its configuration, including the Wi-Fi password. Changing one does not automatically change the other. If the router still uses its default administrator password, someone who can access its settings may be able to change the network password or undo security settings. The FTC recommends changing default credentials. FTC guidance on home Wi-Fi security

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

When should you change it?

  • You shared it more widely than you intended: Change the password if you want to withdraw access from people who no longer need it.
  • You suspect it has been exposed: A new password prevents devices without the replacement credential from joining.
  • You are still using default router credentials: Change the router administrator password as well as setting a unique Wi-Fi password; these are separate settings.

The FTC’s consumer guidance emphasizes unique, secure credentials and changing defaults but does not prescribe a recurring interval for changing a home Wi-Fi password. If access has not changed and you have no reason to suspect exposure, the guidance does not establish a need to change it on a fixed timetable.

Changing the password is only one part of Wi-Fi security

Use WPA3 or WPA2 encryption

The password controls access, while the router’s encryption setting helps protect information sent over the wireless network. The FTC recommends WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal. Microsoft recommends WPA3 when the router and computer support it. The FTC describes WPA and WEP as outdated and insecure. Use a guest network for visitors

If your router offers a guest network, give visitors its login rather than the primary Wi-Fi password. The FTC says this reduces how many people need the primary password and can help keep malware on a guest device away from the primary network. FTC home Wi-Fi guidance

How to change it safely

  1. Find your router’s manufacturer and model. The exact menu names and steps depend on the router. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for changing both the Wi-Fi password and administrator password; contact the manufacturer if its instructions do not resolve the issue.
  2. Set a unique network password and choose WPA3 Personal if supported. If WPA3 is unavailable, WPA2 Personal is the FTC’s other recommended option. Keep the network security key somewhere safe, as Microsoft advises.
  3. Update the administrator password separately. Do not assume that changing the Wi-Fi password also changed the credential used to manage router settings.
  4. Reconnect devices using the new password. Devices that still have only the old credential will need the new one to rejoin.

When to consider replacing an older router

A password change alone is not a reason to buy a new router. If the router offers only WPA or WEP, the FTC advises checking for a software update and checking the available security options again. Consider replacement only if WPA2 or WPA3 remains unavailable after updating. FTC home Wi-Fi guidance
